“The military aspects of President Bush’s new strategy in Iraq … appear to have produced some credible and positive results,” Mr. Levin said in a joint statement with Sen. John W. Warner, Virginia Republican, after a two-day visit last week to Iraq.
“it’s working” Mrs. Clinton said of the troop surge yesterday in a speech at the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in Kansas City, Mo.,
“U.S. Rep. Brian Baird said Thursday that his recent trip to Iraq convinced him the military needs more time in the region, and that a hasty pullout would cause chaos that helps Iran and harms U.S. security.”
What is the liberal HA GWB hate machine going to do with this news?
House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Monday that a strongly positive report on progress on Iraq by Army Gen. David Petraeus likely would split Democrats in the House and impede his party’s efforts to press for a timetable to end the war.
Clyburn, in an interview with the washingtonpost.com video program PostTalk, said Democrats might be wise to wait for the Petraeus report, scheduled to be delivered in September, before charting next steps in their year-long struggle with President Bush over the direction of U.S. strategy.
Clyburn noted that Petraeus carries significant weight among the 47 members of the Blue Dog caucus in the House, a group of moderate to conservative Democrats. Without their support, he said, Democratic leaders would find it virtually impossible to pass legislation setting a timetable for withdrawal.
“I think there would be enough support in that group to want to stay the course and if the Republicans were to stay united as they have been, then it would be a problem for us, ” Clyburn said.
“The war in Iraq “is lost” and a US troop surge is failing to bring peace to the country, the leader of the Democratic majority in the US Congress, Harry Reid, said Thursday.
Let’s face it. The Democrats have chosen the side of DEFEAT. There is no other outcome that can be good for the Democrat party. I cannot wait for ol Hillary to get the nomination…..Her record on iraq alone will put any R in the oval office…..
Simply put…What is good for the USA is bad for Democrats…..
Yes, if the US military sits in Iraq for 10-20 years, which is about how long it takes to pacify a counterinsurgency (study the conflict in Northern Ireland for further reference), then probably things will work out OK.
Northern Ireland is an area about twice the size and population of King County, while Iraq is a medium-sized country with a population slightly less than Texas.

(and yes, given the most optimistic of all possible scenarios, we will be pouring money into Iraq at the current rate for another 10 years. Homegrown insurgencies are very slow to put down. If you have a scenario that allows us to leave sooner, why don’t you go to one of the Hempfest-related threads a few days back and share your dealer’s phone number with us).

Apparently, Julia Patterson had quite the drinking problem in the mid-1990’s (and, absent any treatment, probably still has quite the drinking problem.)
In 1996, at the district’s election night party on the Tyee High School/Chinook Middle School Campus, Patterson was stinking drunk. There’s no other word for it – she literally smelled of all the wine she had imbibed that evening.
And – here’s the kicker – as the victory party was in a rented room on school grounds and there were minors at the party, no alcoholic beverages were served at the party. Patterson, a couple of legislative staffers, and a few supporters kept nipping out to a mini-van from which a healthy supply of booze was being served (some said it was actually Patterson’s mini-van).
Karen Keiser was also well into her cups that evening, but not to the obvious extent that Patterson was.
Patterson, although clearly impaired, insisted upon driving home, as well.

“I am upset a little bit about something right now. And I went on TV Newser and I and saw that CNN and Christiane Amanpour, they’re going to study religious extremism. She’s got this special. She’s going to be on Larry King tonight. I’m going to be watching ‘cause I’m going to be watching it because I’m going to be a little bothered if they’re trying to say that there is moral relativity. They’re going to study Muslim extremism, then Christian extremism, because we know Christians have, have slaughtered thousands of people across the globe in bombings and Jewish extremism. I’m sorry. Come on! It is okay to say that, right now, the vast majority of religious extremists are members of one faith. That doesn’t mean that every Muslim is a terrorist. That doesn’t even mean that even 99 percent of Muslims are terrorists. But to do a three part series on Muslim extremism, Christian extremism and then, uh, Jewish extremism? Is this Rosie O’Donnell or is this Christiane Amanpour? You understand what I’m saying here, Willie? I mean, come on.”
