46 House seats flipped in 2018. Only three of them were Republican to Democrat flips. Republicans must take 19 to regain a majority. Statistics alone can’t tell the story. But the statistics aren’t good. And neither is the rest of the story.
So not only would Republicans need to do a complete 180 in terms of campaign performance they’d have to do it in places where they are actually going in the opposite direction. Where they got slaughtered, and where they would have to turn in order to come back, would be the suburbs, among mostly white, college educated voters, and especially among white women.
Support among those voters for an impeachment inquiry is at an all time high, and it’s rising fast. Vulnerable House Dems in suburban districts that went for Trump in 2016 are facing an electorate who have grown less and less Republican in recent years. Many of those same voters also cast votes for Republicans in their Gubernatorial contests. So they can be reached by Republicans with the right message.
But that message is not at all what the party has to offer any more. An unrelenting sputtering rage spew of WALL!!!, SHITDOWN!!, trade wars, scandals, twitter meltdowns, and subpoenas is not what those votes are looking for. The Trumper base has captured the party and its agenda. At this point it is far easier for Democrats to talk to these voters.
Many of these strategists are entirely new to this situation, so it should not come as a surprise that they might not know how to read it. They have all the money and influence in the world and more on the way whenever they need it. So they can stack the amps into the sky and crank them to “11” and beyond. But that only makes it worse if your audience hates your music.

When I think of you I think of this time when I was in a medical walk-in facility, in Glastonbury, having a Cat Scan or MRI done, about 10 years ago.

I waited in this room for well over an hour. As I waited, I could hear the guy who led me to the room talking to his wife/girlfriend (significant other), as he walked around the area; his conversation would fade in as he got near and fade out as he got further away. He was on the phone shooting the shit with whoever was on the other end of the phone.
One time as I heard him coming towards the room, and after being so frustrated because nobody was letting me know what was going on, I popped my head out and asked what the problem was – he said they were waiting for Insurance clearance, period – he offered no other words. As I continued to wait, probably for another hour in the room, this guy was still on the phone with that same person. A McDonald’s worker was probably more productive.
Here is the kicker – the day of my appointment happened to be a day after Election Day (I don’t think it was a Presidential Election but one with many DC Pols), and whoever he was talking to, he (they) were expressing great disappointment that the Dems, “As usual (in Connecticut)”, won the majority of races. A good half hour of the time of the conversation was about their disappointment.
All I can think of today is how much that reminds me of you. Someone that complained and bitched, with a bunch of double standards hypocrisy about lazy workers when you hardly did any work that day for 3 hours while I waited for the Insurance confirmation.
