I’m that rare odd duck who generally prefers to rent or lease depreciating assets. I have my FIL to thank for that one.
I think I met one guy who could really “afford” to own a boat. He was a principal in a fairly large commercial construction company who started an arbitration service that made him stupid rich. When a guest spilled half a bottle of red wine on the white carpet (who the fuck puts white carpet in a boat?) he laughed and said if the cleaners couldn’t get it out he’d just have the marina put in new carpet. That’s the way to own a boat.
Instead, nine of ten owners you know will spend three weekends working on the goddamn thing for every one weekend they spend enjoying it. And for every one weekend they spend enjoying it, they put in two months of nights and weekends earning to pay for it, so it can sit in berthing. Get to know these guys. Always offer to pay for the gas, and bring plenty of wine. They need it.
