Open Thread 8/16

by Carl Ballard — Thursday, 8/16/12, 8:01 am

– People pointed out a year ago that Ryan’s plan will destroy Medicare. The Washington Post, the paper that brought down Nixon, responded by awarding that fact four cartoon Pinnochio heads. Journalism.

– The Greenwood food bank is running low.

– There are a lot of questions about the Chicks for Rob button. Not the least is how it got through whatever campaign bureaucracy there should be to stop this sort of thing.

– The supposedly liberal Seattle City Council can’t even support the tiniest bit of campaign finance reform. O’Brien’s proposal isn’t perfect, but it’s better than the status quo.

– And honestly, I’m surprised and impressed that the White House seems to have strengthened its spine and is resisting the silly demands of Republicans and their media abettors for apologies and denunciations when none are needed.

– RIP Johnny Pesky

Mass Shooting Of The Day (TM)

Today’s mass shooting killed 2 cops and wounded 2 more cops, and wounded 5 civilians.

A guy with an assault rifle opened up on a cop directing traffic in the parking lot of a Louisiana steel mill.

    Joe Biden, major liability:

Nearly three months still to go.

Obama keeps Biden – he’s the gift to the GOP that just keeps on giving.

Obama dumps Biden – it’s an admission of major error in choosing him in the first place, and it’s a sign of weakness and desperation.

My feeling is that Hillary is done with taking one for the team, for now. Obama’s got a problem, a huge one, of his own making.

Rightwing militarists are trying to swiftboat Obama, but I don’t think it’ll work. Voters are wise to this sleazy tactic now.

” … [A] group of former special operations and C.I.A. officers started a campaign on Tuesday night accusing Mr. Obama of recklessly leaking information about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden and other security matters ….”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: The key word in this story is “former” — when someone is no longer employed, the thought that naturally comes to mind is they’re former employees because their service was unsatisfactory. Maybe the word “disgruntled” fits here, too. Given who they are, I’d worry if they’re going to start shooting.

You said once that the role of the military included taking the blame for a presidential decision gone bad. The president is free to claim credit for military successes and to deflect criticism for military failures by blaming the military.

But it’s somehow dishonorable for ex-military types to speak up.

Got it. RR hypocrisy at full throttle today.

@6 Private charity is fine, as far as it goes, but given that capitalism is an imperfect system which regularly fails to provide jobs to all who need to work, it’s not asking too much of those who profit munificently from this system to pay a little in taxes for a government-run program that guarantees food subsistence for those left behind by the vagaries of capitalism. No one should have to depend on private charity for basic survival. That’s something society owes to everyone, regardless of whether private citizens are willing to donate or not. We don’t even make murderers and rapists depend on charity for food, so why should we do that to workers?

Romney has seen the largest gain in Ohio, a state we have seen bounce between the campaigns over the last few months. Today, the GOP ticket leads by 2 points (46% to 44%), compared to July when President Obama led the state 48% to 45%. Romney also gained ground in Virginia – today, he and Paul Ryan hold a 3-point advantage in the race (48% to 45%), while Romney trailed by 2 points in July.

President Obama hasn’t formally taken questions from the White House press corps in more than two months, while on the campaign trail in Iowa yesterday he made time for reporters from People Magazine and Entertainment Tonight.

Maybe it’s because it’s the only opportunity they get to elicit a response from him.

27500 jobs created in Iowa since March 2010, according to the Obama campaign:

    http://www.realclearpolitics.c.....15126.html

That’s 4,583 jobs per electoral vote (IA has 6).

    538 electoral votes nationwide.

So, 2,441,444 jobs created nationwide since March 2010.

    29 months since that period.

So, that’s 84,188 jobs created per month.

What do we need just to keep up with population growth? 125-150K jobs per month just to keep up?

Under Obama, we’re continuing to hemorrhage jobs over a period of nearly 2 1/2 years.

An embryo has no rights. Rights do not pertain to a potential, only to an actual being. A child cannot acquire any rights until it is born. The living take precedence over the not-yet-living (or the unborn).

Abortion is a moral right—which should be left to the sole discretion of the woman involved; morally, nothing other than her wish in the matter is to be considered. Who can conceivably have the right to dictate to her what disposition she is to make of the functions of her own body?

In 2010 more jobs were created than under the entire 8 years of Bush.

Let us give thanks to Republicans for blocking adequate stimulus to this economy.

But it was Republican policies during the Bush administration that brought on the sickness and Republicans in Congress who have denied the economy an adequate dosage of the cure. Now they want to implicitly blame President Obama for causing the recession and the failure of stimulus to fix the problem, asserting that fiscal stimulus is per se ineffective.

“I did go back and look at my taxes and over the past 10 years I never paid less than 13 percent. I think the most recent year is 13.6 or something like that. So I paid taxes every single year,” he said.

Well, I guess that settles that. No need for Slick Willard to release his tax returns like Obama has, because Slick Willard told us.

Wait. What? Slick Willard has misspoken lied about paying his taxes before?

Until early June, Mr. Romney had said that he had paid his taxes as a Massachusetts resident while in Utah. He later acknowledged that in 1999 and 2000 he paid state taxes as a Utah resident and listed himself as either a part-time resident or a non-resident of Massachusetts. He said that in April, after deciding to run for governor, he had amended his 1999 and 2000 tax returns to say that he was a Massachusetts resident.

Slick Willard trustworthy on taxes? No.

Ever wonder where the smarm comes from?

    Dear Mrs. Rand:

I am not a professional critic and I feel no call to judge the merits of a novel. So I do not want to detain you with the information that I enjoyed very much reading Atlas Shrugged and that I am full of admiration for your masterful construction of the plot.

But Atlas Shrugged is not merely a novel. It is also (or may I say: first of all) a cogent analysis of the evils that plague our society, a substantiated rejection of the ideology of our self-styled “intellectuals” and a pitiless unmasking of the insincerity of the policies adopted by governments and political parties. It is a devastating exposure of the “moral cannibals,” the “gigolos of science” and of the “academic prattle” of the makers of the “anti-industrial revolution.” You have the courage to tell the masses what no politician told them: you are inferior and all the improvements in your conditions which you simply take for granted you owe to the efforts of men who are better than you.

If this be arrogance, as some of your critics observed, it still is the truth that had to be said in this age of the Welfare State.

I warmly congratulate you and I looking forward with great expectations to your future work.

    Sincerely,

Yeah, there are some recent changes:

In his interview with Fox’s Brit Hume Tuesday, Ryan said he has abandoned his plan’s provision to take about a half-trillion dollars out of current Medicare funding in order to shore up the Medicare trust fund for the future (as opposed to the provision of Obamacare that takes about $700 billion out of Medicare to pay for health coverage for currently uncovered people). Romney’s proposal is not to take the money out at all, so Ryan has abandoned his old position and now supports Romney’s.

On October 28, 2010, after the Wisconsin Republican penned at least five letters to two federal departments seeking grants under the Obama administration’s economic recovery package, Ryan responded to a caller on WBZ’s Nightside with Dan Rea who asked if he sought any of the money. Ryan said that he would not vote against something “then write to the government to ask them to send us money.” […]

“I assume you voted against the stimulus,” caller began. “I’m just curious if you accepted any money in your district.”

RYAN “No, I’m not gonna vote [against] something then write letters to the government to send us money,” Ryan responded. “I did not request any stimulus money.”

Same time period in Florida and you have a much more even matchup. In Ohio Romney’s up in about 4 out of around 27 polls.

Any one poll doesn’t mean much, but multiple polls and trends do matter and right now everything points in Obama’s favor in all those state except Florida and that’s a toss up. It’s a long time until the election and things could change, but for right now it’s looking pretty solid for Obama.

Remember, there are more Conservatives than Libs in America.

This is from Politico in January, 2012 and the spread is likely wider today–

Conservatives continue to make up the largest segment of political views in the country, outnumbering liberals nearly two-to-one, according to a new poll Thursday.
The Gallup survey found that 40 percent of Americans consider themselves conservative; 35 percent consider themselves moderate; and 21 percent see themselves as liberal. The figures did not change from 2010. For the third straight year, conservatives outnumbered both moderates and liberals.
Conservatives began outstripping moderates in 2008, and the percentage of moderates has declined steadily over the past two decades, from 43 percent 1992 to 35 percent in 2011.

The economic trend is a slide – I suspect that if GWB43 were still president it would be called a recession at this point. That is not a positive for Obama because the upticks in unemployment rate, the first-time claims consistently above 350,000 each week, and the monthly jobs-created data cannot be hidden and will assume greater importance as we head into Fall.

I don’t disagree that until the most recent batch, polls have gone largely Obama’s way.

My point is that current data aren’t an uptick for Romney due to Ryan, except in WI.

I did not “co-lead a piece of legislation.” I wrote a policy paper on options for Medicare. Several months after the paper came out I spoke and voted against the Medicare provisions in the Ryan budget.

Under this analysis of the Ryan budget, millionaires would get an average tax cut of $265,000 while a typical middle class household with $50,000 of income would see its taxes more than double. Ryan’s spending cuts would hit the middle class and elderly retirees even harder.

The GOP plan for the future: A great deal for millionaires, sucks for everyone else.

Floyd Lee Corkins II, the suspect in Wednesday’s shooting ‏at the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the Family Research Council, was carrying 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in a bag when he opened fire, according to the criminal complaint filed by the Justice Department on Thursday.
Corkins, 28, of Herndon, Va., was charged with “interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition”—a federal offense—along with the “intent to kill while armed.” The offenses carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for transportation of a weapon, and 30 years for intent to kill. Corkins is expected to make an initial court appearance later Thursday.
According to the FBI affidavit, Corkins’ parents said their son “has strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner.” According to The Associated Press, Corkins “had been volunteering recently at a community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.”

Everyone knows what’s wrong with replacing Medicaid with a Voucher program.

    * Medical expenses will go up, because administrative costs for Medicare is less than 1%, but private insurance companies spend about 28% on administrative costs (including executive salaries, aggressive claims handling, advertising, etc.).

    * It still requires seniors to find an insurance company that will accept them. A 75-year old man with diabetes and a heart condition would be hard pressed to find an insurer, at any cost (or at an excessively high cost).

    * The voucher won’t cover the cost of premiums. And as time passes, Republicans will push for more tax cuts for the wealthy and then complain that we have to cut the vouchers even more to cover the “fiscal emergency”. There will be constant battles over how much the voucher payments will be, making senior’s budget planning difficult, if not impossible.

At our business dinner last Tuesday, I noticed the local seafood reastaurant had raised their prices, and just about everything had become a’ la’carte, and portion sizes were diminished. (Seriously, $14.95 for shimp cocktail consisting of only four prawns?) I had expected the appetizers, soup or salad, dinner, and desert to cost about $50.00 per person (plus drinks), but it came in at more than $80 per person.

Yet the place was full. Instead of coupons or promotions, they want you to buy a frequent diner card which gives you some small benefits (a $25 credit on your bill), etc..

Going to the mall across the street, a lot of teenagers wearing expensive clothing with shopping bags full of back-to-school clothing.

Yea, I know Bellevue isn’t like other places. I live in Everett, and prices there are considerably lower. But a lot of the free coupons and promotions are gone, leaving higher prices generally.

So, it appears the retail business owners in this area don’t think they need to cut costs of give away promotions in order get business.

Of course, for Ann Romney, those rules didn’t apply. She managed to spend a semester of her freshman year at Brigham Young University at Grenoble, France, coinciding with the Winter Olympics held there. She also got to see Mitt Romeny, who was near the end of his missionary tour in France. She went on to get a B.A. in French from BYU. The Romney/Ryan plan for Medicare and Medicaid is to have the poorest Americans die off, the sooner, the better. The poor won’t be able to afford private health care insurance, and our Galtian Lords damned well know it.

They find this easy to justify. Poor Americans are obviously not Galtian, so they would be perceived as “inferior”, or as my Wingnut-Speak Decoder app puts it, “expendable”.

The unused vouchers of the ill and dying elderly and poor who still can’t afford healthcare is simply more tax savings for those rich who believe they must have it all, made possible by willing fools named Bob and Klynical Klown.

We’ve heard from wingnuts many times, the poor can go to the ER. As Michael understands, there is no long-term care to be found in our nation’s ER’s. They’re sentencing people to die for being poor in America, they know it, and they don’t care. Again, it is because they view these people as “inferior”. Expendable.

House Republican Ideological Leader, Paul Deficit Hawk Ryan routinely uses his authority to spend government money without even looking.

“After having these letters called to my attention I checked into them, and they were treated as constituent service requests in the same way matters involving Social Security or Veterans Affairs are handled. This is why I didn’t recall the letters earlier,” he continued. “But they should have been handled differently, and I take responsibility for that. Regardless, it’s clear that the Obama stimulus did nothing to stimulate the economy, and now the President is asking to do it all over again.” – Paul Ryan

“But with outside groups’ help, Romney and his supporters — or Team Romney — are outspending President Obama and his allies — Team Obama — $273 million to $239 million.
For the past month, Team Romney has outspent Team Obama by nearly 2-to-1. But that margin is up to 2.5-to-1 this week — with Team Romney outspending Team Obama $25.8 million to $11.1 million.
Part of that is the Romney campaign is almost on par with the Obama campaign this week. The Romney campaign is spending $8.4 million to the Obama camp’s $9.9 million.”

Here’s some predictable b.s. from the Family Council:

“Let me be clear that Floyd Corkins was responsible for firing the shot yesterday,” Family Research Council President Tony Perkins told reporters in Washington about the suspect. “But Corkins was given a license to shoot an unarmed man by organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center that have been reckless in labeling organizations hate groups because they disagree with them on public policy.” Perkins said the SPLC “should be held accountable for their reckless use of terminology that is leading to the intimidation and what the FBI here has categorized as an act of domestic terrorism.”

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/16/.....?hpt=hp_t1

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Oh my. The leader of a hate group doesn’t like being called a “hate group.” Yep, that was predictable. And yes, it’s b.s., because any bunch that preaches hate against strangers who want nothing more than the right to choose their domestic partners is indeed a hate group.

To avoid any possible misunderstanding, the shooter is a criminal and should be kept off the streets for a long, long time if not forever. Anyone who uses a gun to express his political opinions should be locked up.

One more thing. Speaking of giving people a “license” to shoot people they disagree with, I think the NRA has a lot more to do with this than the SPLC does.

First, the context. The Congressional Budget Office estimates Medicare spending over the next 10 years will be about $7.5 trillion. This means the ACA’s Medicare cuts account for less than 10% of overall Medicare spending. The program is not being gutted. Even with the ACA cuts, the CBO says the cost of Medicare is expected to grow from about $500 billion in 2012 to nearly $900 billion by 2022.

As for the cuts, they come from eliminating a massive subsidy to private insurers and gradually reducing the rate of growth in payments to some providers.

Roger’s gain was probably pretty close to 1.006% of his stock market holdings, which I would then calculate to be $183,896.

If he’s a former attorney and that’s all he’s put away, he probably wasn’t a very good one. Even if his stock holdings are half of what he’s got, the rest in bonds or what-have-you, that really isn’t much by today’s standards. Certainly nothing to brag about.

The vote was 233 to 197, with 35 Democrats, many from farm states such as Iowa and Indiana, joining 188 Republicans in supporting the bill. But that measure is not a full five-year farm bill.”

They mostly seem to be showing a tightening race.

I wanted to post about WI.

    http://althouse.blogspot.com/2.....ad-of.html

Senate race there looks to be a pickup for the GOP.

Would Obama campaign there? Would he campaign with Tammy Baldwin?

Think about WI – Walker, Priebus, Ryan. Now Thompson stomping Baldwin.

Obama needs those 10 electoral votes. But outside Madison, he’s got nothing to gain by campaigning there.

If he does campaign there, he’ll be tied to a losing Senate candidate and there’s the whole Walker-Barrett thing hanging over his head.

If he doesn’t campaign there, then the WI momentum favoring the GOP could spread to MI, MN. Maybe more to IA and even OH.

Wisconsin’s become a HUGE problem for the Dems, with serious national implications.

    Thanks again, unions!!!!!!!

Absolutely, you are right about the contrast.

Romney’s running a totally different campaign now that he’s picked Ryan.

He’s focused, specific, even doing chalk-talks now:

    http://minx.cc/?post=331982

I’ll admit, he looked awkward, but he’ll get better.

Will we see Obama turning to numbers? Doubt it, unless they’re the type of numbers that can quickly be debunked.

We already know about Ryan and his ability to deal with numeric specifics.

Ah, and then there’s Joe Biden. He’s been taken off the campaign trail twice now, in August.

The White House hasn’t released Biden transcripts for two months, now:

    http://www.latimes.com/news/na.....7414.story

    I wonder why that is?

There are fewer “swing” voters out there than most people believe — and Republicans need:

“About one-third of Americans describe themselves as independent voters, creating a widespread impression that a large group of Americans will provide the decisive swing votes in this year’s election. But that impression is misleading …. [T]he actual share of voters … up for grabs is probably between … 3 percent and 5 percent in this election, polling experts say. … The share of swing voters may even have declined in recent years, as many voters have become more … partisan.”

    http://tinyurl.com/8frpah3

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Why is this bad news for Republicans (and HA’s self-flagellating trolls)? Because if the election were held today, Obama would win several swing states R-Money needs, so the GOP ticket has no chance unless they can win over significant numbers of persuadable voters in those states. That’s not possible if those votes are already locked in.

The problem is especially acute for R-Money because he’s not getting a “bump” from putting Paul “Privatize Medicare” Ryan on the ticket: “But so far, the Gallup tracking poll has not indicated any immediate bump, even though vice-presidential choices have historically provided one.”

Which leaves Republicans with their last desperate option: When you’re the minority party and the public is against you, the only way you can win is by preventing massive numbers of citizens from voting.

Therefore, look for the GOP to go all-out with voter-suppression efforts. Those photo-IDs they made everyone get won’t be good enough — Republican pollmeisters will find excuses to reject poor and minority voters’ photo IDs. And Republicans once again will spend millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours to keep soldiers deployed to combat zones from voting or having their votes counted.

    Romney Lies About Medicare

Mitt Romney, who knows his running mate’s scheme to privatize Medicare is a dealbreaker for millions of senior voters, now asserts Ryan’s so-called “reform” is the same thing as “Medicare Advantage.”

He’s lying. Medicare Advantage is defined-benefit; Ryan’s voucher scheme is defined-contribution. Seniors will get less benefits under the Ryan plan — and their coverage will be capped. Which makes the Ryan scheme the “death panels” Republicans told scare stories about just a couple of short years ago when Obama was trying to expand the health care coverage that Republicans now want to rescind.

    2. The election won’t be held today. Meanwhile, the polls are tightening and we are approaching the post-convention period when the Romney money will be released.

” … [W]hat have learned in the week since Mitt Romney tapped Paul Ryan to be his running mate? … [T]he pick has given the Romney campaign a shot of energy …. But that energy hasn’t … translated to … polls … showing a minimal bounce. … [It] has shifted the issue terrain to Medicare, not only in the presidential contest but also the battle for the House …. [and] marked the most negative turn in the campaign so far with … Romney accusing the Obama camp of engaging in ‘division and anger and hate’ … so much for that promise of a more high-minded debate ….”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: I think the GOP’s campaign tactics will get even dirtier from here. R-Money’s 2009 tax return looms ever larger.

“[T]he Obama campaign sent a letter to the Romney camp making this offer: If Romney releases just five years of returns (including the 2010 and 2011 he has given/pledged to give), the Obama camp promises NOT to criticize him for not releasing more. ‘I repeat, the governor and his campaign can expect in return that we will refrain from questioning whether he has released enough or pressing for more,’ Obama manager Jim Messina wrote to Romney manager Matt Rhoades. (Note: This offer doesn’t seem to pertain to WHAT’S IN the tax returns.)”

The Romney camp refused. Obviously, there’s something in Romney’s last 5 years of tax returns they don’t want us to know. But he’s already released 2010 and 2011, so it has to be in 2007, 2008, or 2009. As previously pointed out, 2009 is the year when the IRS offered amnesty from prosecution to rich taxpayers who evaded taxes by hiding income in Swiss banks and offshore accounts like those in the Cayman Islands, and Romney is known to have had Swiss and Cayman Islands accounts, so it isn’t hard to connect the dots.

Cereal Bob’s estimate of my stock holdings is wrong; in addition, he has completely overlooked three other major asset classes: State pension, home equity, and ownership of a small business.

He makes another error by assuming my stocks’ performance tracks market indexes. That would be true only if all my money was invested in a market-index ETF, but it should be obvious to anyone who has been reading my previous posts that I invest in individual stocks. The whole point of doing so is to beat the market averages. If you’re not trying to do that, then you should put your money into a market-index ETF and not waste your time studying the economy, various industries, market trends, and individual companies and stocks.

It’s possible, of course, that a gain of $1850 on a day when the market goes up 1% could be a substantial underperformance in relation to the market indexes. That would be true if my stock portfolio exceeds $182k. But it also would be meaningless, because a portfolio holding dozens of individual stocks will be all over the map on any given day. What matters is long-term performance. What is more interesting is when I make $4000 on a day when the market is down by 1% or more. There are such days. I’ll give you only one specific figure: My best-ever year was 2009, the year of the Great Recession’s deepest stock crash — I made a 90% overall portfolio gain in 2009.

No one who has read my previous posts, and has been paying attention, could possibly think I have any money whatsoever in bonds. Why would a rabbit who goes around saying bonds are the most dangerous investment there is in a zero-interest environment, own any bonds?

I don’t wish to disclose my finances — I’m not running for public office — but I’ll say this. By the time the Great Recession Struck, Mrs. Rabbit and I had zero debt and all of our income came from non-employer sources. I’ll let you decide whether that was dumb or smart.

This week, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation released figures for Wisconsin’s exports through the first half of 2012. And they had great news to report.

Wisconsin exported $1.5 billion worth of agricultural products to over 132 countries, which is an increase of 5 percent over the first six months of 2011. Over the same time, U.S. exports of agricultural products totaled $77 billion—a decrease of 4 percent.

Wisconsin’s total exports grew by 7.9 percent in the second quarter of 2012, with specific increases in the exports of industrial machinery, agricultural products, vehicles, and medical and scientific instruments. Wisconsin exports totaled $11.6 billion in the first quarter of 2012.

Stocks are reported on federal income tax returns only when a taxable event occurs, typically a sale of the stock. So RR would have to report taxable earnings only to the extent that he recognized taxable earnings (capital gains) on the sale of the stock. If he decides to keep the stock until he dies, no taxable transaction occurs. His heirs wouldn’t have to pay taxes either, they take his stock with a stepped-up basis meaning that the capital gains are, in effect, forgiven. That’s why the Republicans hate the estate tax so much – it recaptures those capital gains.

The purpose of the meeting was to disclose the coming economic meltdown and beg Congress to pass legislation to help collapsing banks.

“Instead of doing anything to help, Ryan left the meeting and on that very same day Paul Ryan sold shares of stock he owned in several troubled banks and reinvested the proceeds in Goldman Sachs, a bank that the meeting had disclosed was not in trouble.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: The short response is they all do it, or a lot of them do, and they shouldn’t be allowed to — this shouldn’t be a partisan issue. This is one thing we all should be able to get together on. And, in fact, Congress did send a bill to President Obama for his signature. Which shows what’s possible when the public puts enough pressure on Congress and the political parties.

Oh get this.. Paul Ryan may be a miserable tax dodger:

In the midst of being vetted for the republican vice presidential nomination, Paul Ryan admitted to the Romney campaign that his wife controls a trust worth up to five million dollars – a fact which he had been hiding from the House Ethics Committee for a decade, says USA Today. The trust produced a six figure income for Ryan and his wife Jenna in 2011, and was inherited from her parents. Ryan’s decision to disclose the income now means that he knew the increased scrutiny brought on by the presidential campaign would eventually bring it to light, but his failure to disclose it to the ethics committee until just now points to the income going unreported or underreported on his income tax filings; his primary motivation for keeping it secret from the ethics committee would be so as not to tip off the IRS…

Before we get off the subject of my personal finances, I want to make two things clear, and they’re interrelated:

    1. I was a career state employee.
    2. I’m not a millionaire.

I chose a career that helps people instead of one that makes money. I simply tried to manage the little money that public servants make in an intelligent way. My basic strategies were to (1) get out of debt and (2) save instead of spend.

I feel pretty confident that I was right about this. A couple years ago, I read a book called “The Millionaire Next Day,” by a couple of academic types who researched the characteristics of America’s millionaires. What they found is:

    1. Over half of America’s millionaires live in homes worth less than $300,000 and have blue-collar lifestyles.

    2. Most people who live in million-dollar homes and drive fancy cars have little or no net worth.

I thought that was instructive. It makes sense when you think about it: You can’t save or invest money that you spend. And once money is spent, it’s gone, so spent money doesn’t create any net worth. In other words, no one ever spent their way to wealth.

Hey, anyone know much about the Chicago Tribune paper?? Look:

The Chicago Tribune believes in the traditional principles of limited government; maximum individual responsibility; minimum restriction of personal liberty, opportunity and enterprise. It believes in free markets, free will and freedom of expression. These principles, while traditionally conservative, are guidelines and not reflexive dogmas.

The Tribune brings a Midwestern sensibility to public debate. It is suspicious of untested ideas.

But a recent study issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said climate changes fueled by people burning fossil fuels in their cars, homes and businesses made the 2011 heat wave in Texas 20 times more likely to occur compared to conditions in the 1960s. In the United Kingdom, soaring November temperatures were 62 times more likely because of climate change, the report concluded.

Every county board of elections in Ohio is composed of two Democrats and two Republicans. Democrats in virtually all of the 88 counties want as many voters as possible to participate, so they’re for extending early voting hours. Unfortunately, most Republican board members seem to favor extending the hours only in counties that historically go for Republicans.

When there’s a tie on a board, Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted casts the deciding vote. I don’t need to tell you how that’s been working out.

For the past two months (at least), there’s been lots of speculation of what Mitt is hiding in the returns he refuses to disclose.

But after seeing Ann Romney’s interview, in which she showed flashes of anger at questions about the tax returns, and vowed that no more returns would be released, I have a theory.

Many wealthy people write off their horses as “investments” or “business expenses”. This includes the cost of purchasing the horse (subject to depreciation), and the considerable expenses for the care of the horse (boarding, feed, grooms, trainers, etc.). Potential income could come from race/award prizes, stud fees, selling offspring, etc.

Now there is a substantial personal componant to these expenses. A large portion of real estate can be allocated to stables, barns, pastuer, and tracks. The owner gets to travel (tax-deductable) to wherever the horse is being shown, where they will hob-knob with those few who can also afford to engage in the busess/hobby. But the IRS will usually not question the legitimacy of those expenses, as long as there is eventually some profit shown.

So – how are Ann’s dressage horses treated on the Romney joint tax returns? Will a scrutiny reveal tens of thousands of dollars in air travel to attend competitions, special horse-breeding club membership fees, etc.?

My guess is that this is where Ann Romney has put her foot down – she doesn’t want anybody second-guessing the money she spends on her horses and the associated socializing. That’s HER exclusive area within the marriage, and she’s not going to let Mitt’s campaign intefere with that.

Yea, I know, Morman’s are notoriously paternalistic and don’t give women much role in the decision-making in the household. But within an individual relationship, some give-and-take is required. Ann probably allowed Mitt to run for President even though she would probably have preferred to live a wealthy lifestyle outside the public eye. In return, Romney might have promised Ann that his campaign wouldn’t impact her dressage hobby.

I believe Mitt when he says he paid taxes every year. After all, he’s a Mormon, and a Mormon wouldn’t lie about something like that. Maybe other stuff, but not that.

So I still think the most viable theory is that he accepted an IRS amnesty in 2009. Whatever shit he’s hiding is most likely in his 2009 return, and when you ask yourself what happened that year, the IRS amnesty was the big tax story of 2009.

The Obama campaign appears to be homing in on the Romneys’ 2009 tax return, too. This week they promised to back off from requesting the Romneys’ tax returns if they agree to release the last 5 years. Romney had already released 2010 and 2011, so the Obama campaign is really asking for just 3 more years.

Of course, if Romney release 3 more years, he’s got to release 2009. I mean, it would look pretty bad if he skipped over 2009 and released 2006, 2007, and 2008 wouldn’t it? That would make it obvious he’s hiding something in his 2009 return, although that’s already pretty obvious and couldn’t get much more obvious. And it became even more obvious when he answered, “No!” I mean he practically shouted “NOOO!!!” which has the same effect as taking the 5th Amendment.

Remember that Adelson has lots of legal troubles which threaten to spill over into federal Dept. of Justice investigations. To Adelson, it might be money well spent. Romney’s trip to London also included an appearance at a fund-raiser among Citi Bankers, who are similarly embroiled in the LIBOR scandel.

Interesting how the President is playing chess, while the rest of us are playing checkers.

Romney’s excuse for not releasing his tax returns were that Democrats would keep asking for additional returns, ad infinitum. That never seemed to be a problem with other candidates over the past thirty years or so, but Romney seems to have some irrational fears.

So I worried when the President offered to accept only five years of tax returns, fearing the real dirt might be found in returns previous to that. What about years six to ten?

But as I said, the President is playing chess. When Romney refused the offer, the President had him stuck – he had NO EXCUSE for not releasing the additional three years worth of returns. Moreover, the President has come out as the “compromiser”, offering Romney a way out. By refusing, Romney put himself into an indefensable position.

    Check and checkmate.

@310 Guys like Adelson don’t hand out money without getting something in return. And they don’t become billionaires by settling for 5% return on investment. In the 2000-2004 election cycle, rich donors gave $4 billion to the GOP, and got $400 billion of tax breaks in return. That’s a 10,000% return on investment. It may not be too far a stretch to wonder if Ryan promised something similar to Adelson.

We know Romney wants to eliminate taxes on dividends, capital gains, estates, and corporations. That means guys like Adelson would pay zero taxes. That’s worth investing in a few million dollars of campaign donations, if you’re Adelson.

Republicans like Romney and Ryan believe only wage earners should pay taxes, just as they believe only workers’ children should die in their wars. They figure they’re too good to pay taxes or serve in the military. After all, they’re the “job creators,” so everyone else should suck up to them.

Are we also supposed to kiss the water they walk on?

After speaking strongly about how much he supports the President’s invasion and occupation in Iraq, some pesky reporter asked Romney how come none of his children served in the military. After a moment of the “dear in the headlight” look, Romney tried to argue that they were serving their country in their own way, by working on their father’s campaign.

The barely controlled laughter from the reporters was audible.

Here’s a heartwarming story for all you lawyer-haters out there.

This story starts with University of Michigan students electing a gay as their student body president.

A lawyer employed by the state attorney general didn’t like that, so he started a private blog whose aim, he says, was to get the gay student body president to resign.

His blog accused the gay student of “enticing minors with alcohol and recruiting people to become homosexual.”

The gay student didn’t resign, he sued.

The gay student offered a deal: He’d drop the lawsuit in exchange for an apology and retraction.

The lawyer refused. He went to trial and represented himself, arguing the gay student was a “public figure,” therefore the lawyer’s “free speech” is protected by the First Amendment.

Wanna guess what the outcome was?

The very right wing Peter Schiff on the Paul Ryan “plan”:

More likely, the continued accumulation of unsustainable levels of debt under the Ryan plan will eventually cause our creditors to lose confidence in our ability to repay. It will cause interest to spike, the economy to tank, unemployment to soar, spending to rise, revenues to decline, and the budget deficit to spiral out of control. Rising interest rates hold the potential to spark a sovereign debt and currency crisis that will render the entire plan irrelevant anyway.

A measure of future U.S. economic activity recovered in July following a sharp drop in June, providing further evidence of an economy that is regaining some momentum. ..

Economists viewed the July result as evidence that the economy has regained its footing after a sluggish spring that had raised concerns that the country could be in danger of slipping into another recession.

“The expansion continues, no double-dip recession, just continued moderate, sub-par growth,” said John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo.

GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan took a swipe at President Barack Obama on Thursday for failing to rescue a General Motors factory in his Wisconsin congressional district, calling it “one more broken promise” on the Democratic administration’s record.

The attack has already received a fair amount of ridicule because the Janesville, Wis., plant actually closed during the last year of George W. Bush’s presidency. What hasn’t really been emphasized is whether Ryan clearly knew this and made the charge nonetheless.
