When a Roseanne-like show is a hit, not because it sympathizes and ratifies the subtle irrational fear and hate. But because it not-so-gently challenges those ideas.
When our major media are fundamentally ashamed of covering Birferism as anything other than a ridiculous affront to human dignity.

There are millions of decent, ordinary, hardworking Americans who feel taxes are too high, there’s too much dependency, and government intrudes on their personal freedoms. We may not agree with them on some of these issues, but these are honest disagreements.
Tragically for them, they are represented by corrupt charlatans and liars. Tragically for all of us, we’re stuck with dysfunctional politics and a destructive national leader.
In a democracy, the political system should provide a forum for policy debates and competition between ideas. We don’t have that. We have nincompoops like WSU’s Mike Leach falling for a fake video, demanding proof that it’s fake, and when given proof refusing to admit its falsity, instead doubling down on its libel of former President Obama by calling it “incomplete” and telling a reporter he’s “not sorry” he helped spread an internet lie.

This is what Republicans have become. It’s not pretty. More importantly, it doesn’t leave a door open for those who might agree with them on some policy matters and would otherwise be willing to work with them on addressing their legitimate concerns. For example, I’m not against rational reform of our broken immigration system.
But when the Mike Leaches of the world behave this way, all you can do is tune them out; and when those who disagree with Democratic policy preferences tune us out and leave no room for negotiation or compromise, we have no opportunity to consider their ideas and concerns, and all we can do is vote against them.
Hate is not a program, and it won’t create a future for our country and citizens. It can only drag all of us down.
I’m not against tilting our social system a little more toward self-reliance and less dependency on government programs, although I don’t think “everyone for himself” is a workable philosophy in our complex modern technological world. In fact, it never has been; human survival has always depended on cooperating in groups, and achieving a successful society consists of both individual rights and social responsibilities — you can’t have one without the other.
Looking for paths forward, let’s start with:
Stop disrespecting workers
Stop disadvantaging wages
Make education more accessible
Remove racial and gender barriers
Preserve a reasonable safety net
Guarantee access to essential health care
Protect our habitat — we need it to survive
Provide reasonable worker and consumer protections
Protect and nurture everyone’s children
Maintain a military capable of protecting us but work for peace
Regulate capitalism as necessary to prevent catastrophic economic meltdowns
Maintain our vigilance against potentially catastrophic diseases
Provide enough government support where necessary to get new technologies off the ground
Fix our broken immigration system so our economy has the workers it needs and we remain a compassionate country
Dedicate our country and policies to serving the good of all humanity, not just the selfish wants of our own citizens
This is not a complete list. It’s what I can think of right now.
