Open Thread 7+7=14

by Carl Ballard — Monday, 7/7/14, 8:00 am

– This is a standard phony GOP hissy fit — and from their tepid responses on the shows this morning, the Democrats are in danger of falling for it. Again.

– Anyone planning to go to a marijuana shop on opening day?

– If you’re not registered to vote, here’s your last chance before the primary.

– I really don’t understand why Carly Fiorina still has any sway in GOP politics.

– Well, if the apology was profuse.

– Give all sides a hearing, no matter what.

Stephanie Miller Smacks Down Fiorina: Your Medieval History Degree Is ‘Handy’ Defending GOP
    By David July 6, 2014 11:30 am

Liberal radio host Stephanie Miller on Sunday explained to former Republican U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina that her study of medieval history would “come in handy” after the Supreme Court ruled that corporations like Hobby Lobby could deny birth control coverage to women for religious reasons.

The false right wing “meme” about “Emperor” Obama and executive orders…..is just an excuse to appease the rabid right wing of the party. The right wing crazies want an impeachment vote – but the republican leaders know that would be political suicide. So the “lawsuit” is their weapon of choice – but they are so dumb they can’t even explain what the lawsuit is for….

Iraq-Bound Troops Confront Rumsfeld Over Lack of Armor

    By ERIC SCHMITT

    Published: December 8, 2004

CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait, Dec. 8 – In an extraordinary exchange at this remote desert camp, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld found himself on the defensive today, fielding pointed questions from Iraq-bound troops who complained that they were being sent into combat with insufficient protection and aging equipment.

    Yeah. Good times!

    When Beliefs and Facts Collide
“Mr. Kahan’s study suggests that more people know what scientists think about high-profile scientific controversies than polls suggest; they just aren’t willing to endorse the consensus when it contradicts their political or religious views. ”
    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07......html?_r=0

So more facts and more truth won’t change the mind of conservatives. the facts challenge their identity.

Ignorance is a choice, just like belief. The real problem is to get people to reject ignorance. The difficulty in that is that ignorance, like belief, is easy. Rejecting ignorance requires effort. That is why there are so many people who choose ignorance and belief over reason and fact.

For many, being identified as a member of a specific group, even if that group wants you to believe stupid things, is more important than objective reality. They must get something from that group membership that outweighs what they would get from reality.

An interesting comment on the autonomous truck

“Yes, autonomous drivers are a wonderful invention but no one is focusing on the social changes that must take place. We are eliminating employment at an ever increasing pace. If we fail to make provisions for keeping people above water without regard to whether they work or not we are going to bring down our society into the worst collapse of all times. If we generate poverty we will generate rebellion and chaos. Meanwhile we have people chained to dogmas who are in denial about what is occurring.
But we really must begin preparing the public safety net, because the “everyone that wants a job can find one” idea is going to go away, the more we can automate the low-skill work. We can college educate more and more people, we can teach them to be designers and engineers and scientists, but there are still going to be more and more people that just can’t find a place. And we are going to have to be prepared, as a society, to have a place for these people.”

I don’t see republicans addressing a safety net at all. A safety net would cost them money. I barely see democrats thinking about it. I see serious conflict in our future.

You think the gun debate is nasty,

I see this nasty subtext to the immigration debate, one group has to have more kids than all the other groups, to crowd them out.

Small wonder Obama doesn’t want to take the time to stop in and check out happenings on the border when he’s in the Lone Star State to fundraise for the Democrat Party later this week.

Someone might ask him a question that a pen and a phone won’t be enough to answer.

From the same poll referenced you rujaxoff’s favrit left wrong site…

But voters disapprove 55 – 37 percent of the way President Obama is handling the situation in Iraq and disapprove 52 – 42 percent of the way he is handling the situation in Afghanistan, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

So Bush started Iraq but Obummer ain’t handling it at all!

Nuthin from rujaxoff on those facts. It’s Independents that kick Obummer’s sorry ASS all over!
