I agree 100% with what Carl said. In NYC of all places, where a bottle of beer (domestic) costs $6 in a bar, you can still go to Wendy’s and get a large Chili for under $4.00; if you add in a side salad it still costs around $7.00; with taxes! And it’s a relatively healthy meal.
So with that said – if a profit based business can do that, then why can’t a non-profit be able to provide food and meals for the same or less? Expand the menu with other healthy cheap eats.
There may be times when a better solution and a less costly solution can be achieved to fulfill the needs of the poor; maybe the homeless (those that are on the street) can have a place other than a shelter or soup kitchen to get a meal and not have to beg on the street. What is worse to be “infantilized” in this manner or to have to beg to a stranger for food?

I side with Jed Rakoff. Given the statistically significant rate of false conviction, the death penalty amounts to a procedural denial of due process.
Perhaps like you, I’m not particularly persuaded by most of the humanitarian arguments opposing the death penalty. But I still haven’t found a compelling justification for the known fact that some innocent people have been executed before they could successfully challenge their convictions. And the statistical certainty that innocent people will be executed before they can successfully challenge their convictions.
The recent market downturn and then upswing is good for investors because it clears out a lot of the trash in the system. Sometimes the markets get ahead of themselves and need a pullback to calm things down.
@45 It’s valid to argue that some jurisdictions can’t be trusted not to convict innocent people. However, there are heinous cases where guilt isn’t in doubt, and I think it should be available for those cases.
I doubt there’ll be any risk of false conviction in today’s school shooting case. Rather, the disputes will center around the shooter’s mental capacity. But the legal standard is not whether he suffered from a mental illness or defect, but whether he could distinguish right from wrong; and, at the time of execution, whether he understands why he’s being put to death.
We’ll have to wait and see how this case plays out in the legal process; but based on the acts committed, I would consider the perpetrator a candidate for capital punishment, subject to a determination of exculpatory insanity.
In other words, I’m not entirely put off, in all cases, by the state killing someone who walks into a school and kills a dozen or more innocent children.
“Death While Incarcerated” is a good compromise with those who advocate the death penalty and those who want to end the death penalty.
Put the guy or gal in prison for life and let the killer die of whatever health issue arises. So, if a guy gets sentenced under this plan, he/she will die of the heart disease, stroke, cancer, kidney failure, diabetes or whatever he/she develops as he/she lingers in prison waiting for the disease to take him/her. No medical intervention with the diseases. I suppose we could be kind and provide palliative care only.
Advantages: the guy or gal dies, which satisfies the pro-death penalty people, and, while he/she is in prison, the anti-death penalty folks can be working on evidence to exonerate the guy/gal, assuming it exists.
Disadvantages: the guy or gal could be healthy and live a long, long time without developing a fatal disease or condition. Taxpayers could be on the hook for some time with the healthy killers.
The usual 4% rule for withdrawing from one’s retirement funds has come under scrutiny by a lot of the talking heads in the retirement and investment community. It’s looking like using a smaller percentage, 2.5% to 3% is gaining favor as people are living longer and healthier lives. Oddly enough, IRS Publication 590 has some withdrawal tables that approximate the new thinking and should be considered by those wanting to make their retirement accounts last a long time.
I’d recommend checking those out with the help of a knowledgeable financial person to assist you. In perfect retirement/estate planning, the check the undertaker bounces!

There’s been a tendency by conservative judges to prioritize finality over avoiding miscarriages of justice. Credible innocence claims and new evidence should get a hearing at any stage of the process. And the fact that many of the wrongful convictions exposed by recent innocence project work were caused by sloppy or tainted forensics work demonstrates the need for more rigorous training and supervision of forensics work that will be used in criminal trials. Courts should give higher priority to avoiding wrongful convictions, especially in death cases, and this involves among other things giving greater recognition to the unreliability of eyewitness testimony. It also should be made easier to weed untrustworthy people out of the system; for example, a cop who’s caught lying in court shouldn’t be allowed to work in law enforcement again. That can be accomplished through a licensing system. Our criminal justice system needs these improvements regardless of whether there’s a death penalty.

If you don’t own the gun, you can’t shoot it, and all gun purchasers must pass background checks. Simple as that. Won’t eliminate all gun violence but it’ll sure reduce it.

It might be worth remembering that the government’s “food assistance” programs (and those 25 cent school lunches us old creaky boomers used to eat) had multiple purposed, and the primary one wasn’t to help out poor folks in the cities. We got really good at producing lots and lots of food for the GI’s in WWII, and after that the choice was to let two-thirds of the people in the food industry rot in hell, or find something else to do with what they produced. It’s about how government can provide the poor, food, at a specific place and time. The Department of Agriculture does buy food. The food stamp program is only in part about providing food to the poor it’s also about the government buying excess crops from farmers and providing those crops to the poor. If putting the food into boxes and delivering the food directly to the poor is more efficient, and provides healthy calories, at the least cost to the poor and participants in the food stamp program then it should be considered. This is not about how people feel about being around the poor. Or putting the poor out of sight and mind, It’s about feeding people. If it’s more efficient to put out tables, and long benches in the middle of Seattle, and feeding the poor out of a stew pot and that is the most efficient way of providing the poor calories then it should also be considered.
The plan has some merit, but attacking the plan with identity politics misses the point of having food stamps in the first place. If it’s just to ensure some poor people cannot have lobster tail once a year that is a far better objection than your point. And the poor would still have the remainder of their EBT on the card, so they could still get lobster tail depending on the details.

Roger Rabbit Commentary: So what? Trump’s “middle class tax cut” is an illusion anyway, as are the one-time bonuses in lieu of permanent pay raises that companies are doling out to workers they have to pay more anyway.
America needs to rebuild its infrastructure if we want a thriving economy. We have to pay for it. The federal gas tax isn’t indexed to inflation and hasn’t been raised since 1993. It’s the logical place to start.
This is one tax that SHOULD fall on the middle class. They drive on our highways and bridges by the millions. When gas is cheap they buy gas guzzling SUVs and pickups. If gas is less cheap, not as much. That’s bad?
To put numbers in perspective, a 25-cent gas tax increase would cost consumers about $40 billion, or roughly 1/30th of what Trump wants to spend on infrastructure. It’s exactly equal to what Trump wants to spend on a border wall. If the SUV and pickup drivers who want a border wall don’t want to pay for better roads and bridges then let ’em drive on what we have.
It’s obviously not enough, in fact, these numbers graphically illustrated just how puny Trump’s “middle class tax cuts” are —
they’re getting about $120 billion of the $1.5 trillion with the rest going to the rich. So additional funding mechanisms will have to be found.
Trump’s “solution” is to dump most of the infrastructure costs on states and municipalities, who will pay for it either by raising state and local taxes or diverting funds from other services they provide. And private investment, which will be compensated with tolls and other user fees. Guess who’ll bear these burdens? If the middle class is going to pay for infrastructure, which they are anyway, you might as well raise the gas tax. It’s the most direct and efficient way to tax the middle class for infrastructure, and has the side benefit of discouraging large passenger vehicles and fossil fuel consumption.
I think raising the federal gas tax to help fund road and bridge repair is an excellent idea and such an excise tax increase is long overdue.
