Consumers spent more freely in the last couple of quarters, but they spent their seed corn to do it, which means this growth bump is nonrecurring. And to the extent it’s also fueled by borrowing, rising interest rates pressure household cash flow and force consumers to cut back even more. There are other signs of trouble in the consumer economy: Slowing auto sales, lower credit quality, rising loan default rates among them. All this doesn’t necessarily mean the next recession is just around the corner, but most economists expect GDP to fall back to 2% – 2.5% shortly. Wall Street understands this. Many consumer staples stocks have actually fallen back this month while the market indexes roared higher. Politicians understand it, too. We’re seeing a flood of Republican retirements. There’s a good chance Trump and the GOP survivors will go into midterms having to explain slow growth, higher loan fees, and higher inflation to voters who were promised miracle fixes for the economy.
