The basic problem is still that Dems in #waleg are reacting to a right-wing freakout designed to undermine transit. Dems need to put transit first, instead of prioritizing caving to the right.
Jan 15, 2018
Actually, the basic problem is
California bullet train cost surges by $2.8 billion: ‘Worst-case scenario has happened’
The estimated cost of building 119 miles of bullet train track in the Central Valley has jumped to $10.6 billion, an increase of $2.8 billion from the current budget and up from about $6 billion originally.
The new calculation takes into account a number of intractable problems encountered by the state rail agency. It raises profoundly difficult questions about how the state will complete what is considered the nation’s largest infrastructure project with the existing funding sources.
http://www.latimes.com/local/c.....story.html
The cost overrun was predicted quite awhile ago and dismissed by those in charge of the program.
We’re seeing similar increases in the cost of the Sound Transit extension to Lynnwood – cost up $500M and delay of six months.
It’s not a “right-wing freakout”. It’s reality, and Robert Cruickshank doesn’t want you caving to reality, libbies.

Nope. Refusal to embrace reality.
The 2013 Parsons Brinckerhoff cost estimate showed increases in almost every phase of the project. The company reported higher costs for land acquisition, viaducts, tunnels, electrical systems and professional services, largely driven by difficult segments of track that would run through mountains from Palmdale to Bakersfield.
The document was never made public, and the state rail agency declined a Times request to provide it under the state’s public records act. The Times later obtained it from an engineer close to the project.
Lisa Marie Alley, a spokeswoman for the rail authority, declined to discuss details of the Parsons Brinckerhoff cost estimate, but she said it was “superseded” by the 2014 business plan several months later, which cited the $68-billion estimate.
The cost estimate was one of two times a key contractor has reported bad budget news that the state rejected.

Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit’s reply @ 17 in that thread included:
I think the changes will be good for the stock long-term. Other investors apparently agree, because the stock rose $1.73 today from its opening price of $22.10 to close at $23.83. GE actually posted a gain today after releasing its shitty earnings report. That’s a sign of investor confidence in the company’s long-term prospects.
GE is one of my larger positions, and I’m comfortable with the idea of holding onto it. If you presently own it, you shouldn’t panic and sell it, and I think the current share price is a buying opportunity if you have the patience to wait 2 or 3 years for returns to materialize. It’s a solid company today and I think it will emerge from this transition as a stronger company down the road.
GE stock price today: $16.43
If Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit was comfortable holding it at $23.83, just think how comfortable he is today knowing that one of his larger positions has fallen by nearly one-third over the past three months.

It would take an unspeakably cruel and uncaring human being to foist this measure of pain upon union workers. Oh, wait…
Donald Trump and his team should take the opposite approach: make everything seem normal while shutting down the regulatory agencies Democrats love. Keep the national parks open, but shut down the EPA. Maintain military readiness, but close down the Departments of Education and Labor. Rather than look at the short-term public relations hit, the White House should keep their eyes on the long game by using a shutdown to remind Americans just how much of the government they could truly live without. And when all of those union-represented employees have gone without a couple of paychecks on top of that, wait for Democrats to come back to the table.

Poor Illinois.
People flocking to low-tax states could swing future elections
The state with the largest downside risk appears to be Illinois, which will lose one congressional seat in 2020 and is in danger of being the only state in the U.S. to lose two seats.
…
Some current projections show high-tax California is on the bubble to actually lose a congressional seat in 2020 — a shocking development for a state that gained seven seats between 1980 and 1990 alone.
…
Meanwhile, another state with extremely high tax burdens, New York, is set to lose yet another seat in 2020, the eighth census in a row that the Empire State has forfeited seats. Going back to the 1940 Census, New York is currently down 18 congressional seats on net. The new count in 2020 would add to that alarming trend.
http://thehill.com/opinion/fin.....tax-states
Rhode Island in trouble, too. Meanwhile, Florida, NC, and Colorado may gain seats. Arizona, too. So some cities in the Western US may see more presidential campaign stops in the final week of the 2020 election season than they did in 2016.
Except Arizona, that is. Hillary showed AZ some serious love that last week.

On Tuesday I invited readers here to take a moment and reflect on Steve Bannon’s choice of lawyer.
The next day it was learned that, in preparation for his testimony before the House Intel Committee, Bannon’s lawyer, Bill Bruck, had checked off with Spec. Prosecutor Mueller, making sure that as far as Mueller was concerned there was no potential conflict of interest in the three, McGahn, Priebus, and Bannon, all sharing the same attorney. Mueller is fine with it. So long as Bruck keeps his clients on the sidelines of Congressional hearings and protects Mueller’s investigation from Nunes and his late night White House beer runs.
That’s a pretty big concession. Especially considering that, however much Bannon may have been thrown under the Fuckface bus, Priebus is still a good Nazi, and McGahn still works in the White House. Lawyers make concessions in exchange for something. That’s part of their duty to their clients. What might Mueller be offering Bruck and his clients in exchange for their cooperation? 1. Tell them to come forward if they want to become American citizens. Tell them they must take and pass the citizenship test all new citizens must take.
2. Have them sworn as as no-kiddin’ American citizens, pledging to support and defend the Constitution.
3. Find out what happened to the people who brought them here and go after those criminals as the human traffickers that they are. Charge the traffickers with times, put ’em on trial, convict them, make ’em serve their sentences, then send the traffickers back to where they came from. The DACA kids are now citizens and get to stay in the US without question, but the criminals that brought them here are dealt with.
4. Tell the DACA kids this is a deal only for them – no bringing-in their seventeenth cousins, twice removed, from Guatemala or Costa Rica or any other shit hole.
5. Caveat to #1 – DACA kids with criminal histories (major felonies) don’t get apply.
6. Get out of the Middle East, Europe and Asia. Use the military to prevent illegals from coming across the Southern border. Don’t have to build any wall ’cause we’ll have a human wall of armed military guys and gals who know how to use their tactical and strategic weapons.
7. Tell Mexico and the rest of Central and South America to get their act together. It’s time for a revolution to throw off the old Spanish families own and control everything. Also, tell ’em to throw out Catholicism. The church has done more to oppress the people in those areas than just about any tyrant around.

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
I wouldn’t so much as make a prediction as I’d narrow the possibilities.
One possibility is that the three know absolutely nothing and have absolutely no relevant testimony to give that would implicate any criminal conduct. Cling to that if you like. About as effective as that comb-over and the Local Motion sticker on the back window. Meh.
The problem with that theory is that it doesn’t explain Bruck’s explicit instructions to his client to refuse to answer a bunch of questions in front of Nunes’ committee. If these clients have nothing to offer, and no testimony that might implicate anyone, then whatever they might say, and however it might make its way back to the Fuckface defense team, it wouldn’t interfere with Mueller’s investigation and potential prosecutions.
Which leaves the other possibility. The one that explains why Bruck has had to instruct his client to dummy up in front of Trey Gowdy.

@28 Typical libertarian idiocy that doesn’t hold up to even off-the-cuff scrutiny, to wit:
“1. Tell them to come forward if they want to become American citizens. Tell them they must take and pass the citizenship test all new citizens must take.”
In other words, you would allow Dreamers to apply for citizenship and become citizens the same way other immigrants do. No argument from me on that, but Trump and the entire GOP stand in your way.
“2. Have them sworn as as no-kiddin’ American citizens, pledging to support and defend the Constitution.”
Here’s the current oath all immigrants must take to become naturalized U.S. citizens:
“I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.”
As far as I can see, this fulfills your demand for “no-kiddin’ American citizens, pledging to support and defend the Constitution,” so what’s the issue?
“3. Find out what happened to the people who brought them here and go after those criminals as the human traffickers that they are. Charge the traffickers with times, put ’em on trial, convict them, make ’em serve their sentences, then send the traffickers back to where they came from. The DACA kids are now citizens and get to stay in the US without question, but the criminals that brought them here are dealt with.”
In most cases, these human traffickers and criminals are their parents, who brought them here because, well, parents like to be with their kids. Are you suggesting making that a separate crime? We already have laws and law enforcers to deport individuals and families who are here illegally.
“4. Tell the DACA kids this is a deal only for them – no bringing-in their seventeenth cousins, twice removed, from Guatemala or Costa Rica or any other shit hole.”
The issue is whether “DACA kids” get to stay in the U.S. by complying with certain conditions, or will be subject to deportation no matter what. As far as I know, there’s no proposal to allow Dreamers to bring in their relatives, except through the channels already existing in our laws for that purpose. So this is really a rant without any substance.
In any case, while I can’t speak for the Democratic Party or its office holders, as for me personally I’ll readily agree to this as a condition of any DACA compromise.
“5. Caveat to #1 – DACA kids with criminal histories (major felonies) don’t get apply.”
I don’t think anyone is proposing this, so once again, this is ranting without substance.
“6. Get out of the Middle East, Europe and Asia.”
Are you really so stupid that you believe we can shield ourselves from the world’s troubles by pulling up the drawbridge and hiding on our continent? How well did this work for isolationists like you back in the 1930s? They got their answer on Sept. 1, 1939 and Dec. 7, 1941.
“Use the military to prevent illegals from coming across the Southern border.”
This isn’t the military’s job. Why not use the Border Patrol for that? Isn’t that what it’s for? Also, using the military for domestic law enforcement functions is illegal, in case you didn’t know.
“Don’t have to build any wall ’cause we’ll have a human wall of armed military guys and gals who know how to use their tactical and strategic weapons.”
This suggestion reflects the military thinking that was prevalent around 10,000 B.C. or so, when humans lived in tiny villages and the perimeter that had to be defended was roughly 100 yards in circumference; but this method of territorial defense has been rendered obsolete by more recent military innovations and experience. Please update your knowledge.
“7. Tell Mexico and the rest of Central and South America to get their act together. It’s time for a revolution to throw off the old Spanish families own and control everything. Also, tell ’em to throw out Catholicism. The church has done more to oppress the people in those areas than just about any tyrant around.”
You seem to be swinging from one extreme (isolationism) to another (interventionism). Make up your mind, then get back to us.
Meanwhile, I suspect you’re underestimating the practical barriers that would stand in the way of achieving your objectives.
On this point, the Soviet experience in Afghanistan is instructive. What you’re suggesting we do in Mexico is a nearly exact description of what the Kremlin attempted when they invaded Afghanistan in 1979. They tried to replace that country’s government, culture, and religion with a Marxist system. How well did that work out for them? If you don’t know, look it up.
This last bullet point, more than anything else, demonstrates how ignorant you are and how divorced from reality your thinking is. Bottom line, you are not competent to pontificate on the matters you purport to lecture us about.
What you should do is stick to shit-flinging like everyone else here. You don’t need to know anything to do that. It doesn’t expose your ignorance or lack of critical thinking skills. With practice, you can craft artful poo and throw it with the best of us. These are skills even someone with your knowledge base and mental faculties can master. So, my advice is, give up trying to be a policy expert or intellectual — those are not your strengths — and focus on doing what you have a chance to become good at.

Simpson’s testimony about his independent research into Trump’s finances and business affairs confirms much of what we already know or suspect:
He has a long history of contacts with mobsters;
Russians are his bankers and backers;
He launders money for them;
He’s not as rich as he says.

Still, 56% overall say approving a budget agreement to avoid a shutdown is more important than continuing the DACA program, while just 34% choose DACA over a shutdown. Democrats break narrowly in favor of DACA — 49% say it’s more important vs. 42% who say avoiding a shutdown is the priority — while majorities of both Republicans (75%) and independents (57%) say avoiding a shutdown is more important.

WOW! Sara Carter Reveals FISA Memo Bombshell Could Lead to CRIMINAL PROSECUTION of Senior FBI & DOJ Officials
Snip-
Lawmakers from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) have called for the classified memo’s immediate release. According to Fox News contributor Sara Carter, the contents of the memo are so “explosive,” that it could end special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe. Additionally, the memo’s release could lead to the prosecution of top FBI and Justice Department officials.
Carter reports:
More than 130 congressional members have viewed the classified four-page memo detailing what senior government officials describe as “disturbing and explosive” surveillance abuse by employees of the FBI and Department of Justice under the Obama administration against President Trump and members of his campaign. […]
The classified memo was described by senior government officials as a detailed account of the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into the FBI and apparent FISA abuse associated with the controversial dossier that alleged President Trump colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential election. As recently reported, some congressional members who reviewed the memo said the revelations may end in the removal or criminal prosecution of senior officials in the FBI and Department of Justice.
On Thursday evening, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) told Fox News host Sean Hannity that he believes the memo’s release will lead to government officials going to prison.
“I believe this will not end just with firings. I believe there are people who will go to jail. I was very persuaded by the evidence,” Gaetz told Hannity.

“Republicans are clamoring for the public release of a memo detailing alleged abuses of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) related to the special counsel’s investigation of potential Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election. …
“The rallying cry to ‘release the memo’ has exploded both online and in Congress. The hashtag #releasethememo went viral on Twitter and other social media sites on Thursday, and Republican members of Congress issued statements of alarm about its contents. …
“While still classified to the public, the four-page memo has become an instant fixation online — thanks in part to Russian propaganda accounts, according to a website claiming to track Russian influence in real time. …
“Democrat Adam Schiff of California, a ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, called the memo a ‘profoundly misleading set of talking points drafted by Republican staff attacking the FBI and its handling of the investigation.'”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: So there you have it: The “FISA memo” consists of Republican talking points written by Republican staffers and is being promoted online by Russian propagandists. Gullible rightwing Koolaid drinkers are swallowing it in a single gulp.
Seems like a rather far cry from actual evidence that would put people in general. But there’s nothing new about Republicans acting out their hatred of government by threatening to jail public servants. For a refresher on this, see the case of Georgia Thompson.
http://host.madison.com/news/g.....4feb6.html
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_Thompson
And, of course, every time Republicans railroad another public servant to jail, it ends up costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars; but Republicans don’t mind spending your hard-earned taxes that way.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Maybe Republicans figure if they appoint judges like Roland Freisler they can dispense with real evidence of actual crimes and talking-points memos will be sufficient for getting rid of people they don’t like.

There are two reasons to talk about the 2013 shutdown:
1. Because we’re going to have another.
2. Because that shutdown masked the disastrous Obamacare rollout.
