Where are people donating for hurricane relief? I gave some money to Save The Children but I don’t know if there’s something better. I’d rather be in a position where I thought taxes would cover it.

    Just finished our 2016 taxes. If everyone paid the effective rate we just paid, or a rate anywhere close to it, taxes would cover it.

NPR’s questions were follow-ups to several years of reporting by NPR and ProPublica about shortcomings in the organization’s disaster relief operations and misleading claims about its finances. NPR has asked several times in recent years to speak with Red Cross President and CEO Gail J. McGovern. Those requests have been turned down. Prior to this latest interview, NPR asked again. The organization said McGovern was unavailable, but did make Kieserman available.

    The Red Cross sent the bulk of the remaining donated money to other nonprofits to do the work on the ground. Those other nonprofits then took their own cuts — as high as 11 percent — for their own expenses.

    I went to school with a Houstonian born into unfathomable wealth. It was at her wedding I found myself at a table with then defense secretary William Gates and she donated enough to attend the Trump inauguration and be seen by the Teevees on the platform but that’s not important right now.

    I watched the battle with the planning commission through Facebook to clear cut waterfront property and build the dream house. Been there. Super nice house.

    So today she posts that she’s suing the local planning commission and water board for not doing enough to keep three feet of water out of her ground floor.

    Because personal responsibility and stuff and she really could use a tax break to get recovered quickly and why should the government pay for your decisions.

    A U.S. Supreme Court justice on Monday issued a short-term order restoring President Donald Trump’s ban on thousands of refugees seeking entry to the country.

    The order issued by Justice Anthony Kennedy puts a lower court ruling on hold until the high court decides whether to grant the administration’s request for a longer-term order.

    I should have been more clear – thanks for catching me. Kennedy stayed the decision and scheduled the hearing.

    He could have left the decision intact, and merely scheduled a hearing instead.

    Had someone like Alito stayed a similar decision from a different circuit, that would have meant nothing, as Alito obviously would overturn at SCOTUS hearing. Kennedy’s widely assumed to be the swing vote.
