I remember a conversation I had after the consent decree in Seattle. A friend of mine couldn’t understand why SPD needed it. They said something like “there are so many big city police departments that are so much worse.” I don’t know if that’s true, but if it is, it speaks poorly of policing in general in this country.
If Charleena Lyles couldn’t rely on the supposedly not so bad SPD, who she called, there really has to be fundamental reform of all police.

I just renewed the tabs on my car. I got to pay $226 for the transit tax, and that was over 64% of the total bill. I could have used that $226 to pay down some debt or use the money for some other personally worthwhile idea. Instead, I get to,pay for a transit project that will not be completed in my lifetime and will cost at least twice the predicted price that was sold to the voters last November. I will never use they system because I avoid I-5 and King County like the plague. The real pisser is having to pay an inflated cost based on some pie-in-the-sky valuation of the car. I only drive about 6,500 mils per year, so I’m definitely NOT getting my money’s worth.

I’m pretty sure at least some of the people who voted for ST-3 actually believed someone else was going to pay the ST-3 taxes.
The history of the late great Seattle monorail is instructive. It was to be paid for with a car tab tax. Voters approved it four or five times (I forget which), thinking they could avoid the tax by registering their cars at post office boxes outside the city limits. Then the legislature changed the rules so they couldn’t, and the public demanded a revote. The rest is history.
Do the people around here actually believe that multibillion-dollar projects can be built without paying for them? Apparently so.

More good news for greedy capitalists like Roger Rabbit: Trump didn’t mean what he said about reining in drug prices.
“Biotech stocks (NASDAQ:IBB) were bullish again today, surging another 4.1% and extending this week’s sector gain to 8% as sentiment emerges that the Trump Administration’s attempt to rein in drug prices might not be as harmful as originally feared.
“The sentiment got a boost from a NY Times report which cited a draft of an executive order on drug pricing that appears to focus on easing regulatory hurdles for the industry and ‘largely leaves the drug industry unscathed.’
“The draft ‘is a far cry from what [Trump] said on the campaign trail. I don’t see anything there that addresses the drug companies getting away with murder, and it appears that is because pharma has captured the process,’ Patients for Affordable Drugs founder David Mitchell told the Times.”

It is astounding to me that the chair of an organization like the DNC was never contacted by the FBI or any other agency concerned about these intrusions,” Wasserman Schultz said in a statement. “As a member of Congress, I had the unique clearance to hear any classified briefing that would be involved in such an intrusion, and the FBI clearly should have come to me with that information. @35 “Hey we are helping to pay for the tunnel. It’s a state highway involved.”
I fail to see the relevance of this to my comment @19 about ST-3. In any case, general transportation taxes are funding only the portion of viaduct replacement equivalent to the cost of a new viaduct, with the rest of the funding coming from tolls and other local sources, so an argument can be made that you are NOT paying for the tunnel, only the state highway that runs through it.
“You all want us to help pay for this Sound Transit business you need to make it a state wide project with high speed trains like it should have been.”
You aren’t paying for Sound Transit unless you live within the Sound Transit taxing district.
“Then again we can’t pay for schools or at least manage to get out the budget.”
If you don’t live within the Sound Transit area, your schools very likely are being subsidized by those who do.
“So if Trump finally offers some infrastructure money we will take it? Right?”
It’s apparent you know nothing about Trump’s infrastructure plan. He proposed $1 trillion of infrastructure spending, of which 80% is private funding and 20% is public funding. Any moron can figure out what that implies: You will have to pay a toll to private companies to use formerly untolled public highways and bridges.
“Oh we got have a state government that is open in order to take it.”
Democrats don’t shut down governments. Republicans do. This is evidence that Republicans prefer anarchy over order, and put little or no value on public services like schools, highways, police and fire protection, etc.

Democrats could be fighting for transportation for all Washingtonians. We all need a transportation system not dependent on fossil fuels. Able to with stand what mother nature is likely to throw at it.
Democratic and Republican Washington state legislatures have neglected schools and neglected their responsibility per the Washington State Constitution. Both parties have put prisons before schools. Crime before school books or libraries.
Now after decades of neglect this legislature has to actually do their job, and it will be the fault of Democrats and Republican’s if they can’t make the sausage. I’m not sure they can this time even if the Governor locks em all up in the statehouse in Olympia.
I think it’s possible the state government will shut down, and the Democratic party in this state will take a hit as the legislature is split and the Democratic governor had better start governing, and get them sticks and carrots out, use the bully pulpit and kick some asses. If not you might Republican in the office and maybe a Republican US Senator from Washington.
I could be wrong, but the state is between a rock and a hard place and most of you fools are more entranced with the other Washington than what is going on in your back yards While I may tease and all I do know that transportation improvements in Seattle or in she sound benefit me whether I’m paying for the infrastructure or not. I expect to pay for improvements to Highway 99 in all the counties it crosses. I would happily pay for a statewide system of public transportation on rails or monorails. I wonder where the high speed underground vacuum tubes. And yes our cities nd towns ought to be installing fiber and creating the backbone of a high speed communications network not controlled by a local monopoly such as Comcast or control Comcast and these other networks like the utilities they should be. Washingtonians should not be paying more than $10 for high speed data, and digital telephone services. Cable companies should be treated like the monopolies they are and told what they can charge for basic tv services and basic packages, and some form of ala carte service imposed, and consumers should pay reasonable prices on premium channels. It would be nice if our legislature addressed some of this wouldn’t it. .
