In 2006 Democrat Jon Tester won his Senate seat by roughly the same margin as last night’s race and with a turnout of just under 400K. (Roughly halfway between the two examples above and about average for a midterm.) In 2012, Tester won again with a five point spread and the turnout in that presidential election year was 485K, almost exactly the number who showed up in 2016. So clearly there are enough votes statewide to elect a Democrat in Montana… if you have the right Democrat. Hillary Clinton wasn’t that person and apparently neither was Rob Quist.

American political parties do change, and they are big tents which tend to moderate the parties. Still the Republican party is more democratic than the Democratic party at this time. The Democratic party is much more in the sway of those who are in power. The Progressives in California thought they had won and could be the voice of the party only once again super delegates were 2/3 of those voting in the actual party conference, and the voice of the people who voted in a majority progressive was ignored.
In fear of another Humphrey defeat the Democrats have put in place a non democratic system that allows the current leaders to ignore Democratic voters and to install their choice and not the choice of Democrats. So the Democratic party remains in the politics of 1990. Some may think this is a good thing, but it does not win elections in the long run. It spelled the end of the Whig and Know Nothing parties. Parties do die, and the Democratic party is clearly experimenting with one of those methods. It cannot continue to be the party of the Clinton’s and be successful. They would do better being the party of Carter. Of course there were many voices in that party of Carter, and other contenders and it was oh sooo messy.
