Pete Holmes is pretty good as City Attorney, but it seems like there is space to his left if a challenger wants to come along. I mean a lefty candidate pushing harder on the consent decree might be an interesting race.
I don’t know much about Scott Lindsay (Seattle Times link), but all I really get from that article is that he’s been pushing the homeless sweeps that are gross gross gross. He also has supported safe consumption sites, so he probably wouldn’t be going back to the bad old war on drug days.

Using a badge and gun to hit on a young woman.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/al.....ing-woman/
Roger Rabbit Commentary: The police power of the state is frightening and those exercising it must be carefully supervised. Unfortunately, that’s not happening enough in America, which has a policing crisis on its hands. While the vast majority of cops are decent people who do an outstanding job, there are some rotten apples in the barrel, which puts innocent people at risk. The answer is not to bury your head in your ass, ostrich-like, as numbskulls like Trump, Giuliani, Sessions, Puddy, and our HA trolls are wont to do, but to implement the needed reforms in recruiting, training, supervising, and disciplining police officers, as Seattle and a handful of other cities are beginning to do.
P.S., The LAST thing America needs is a leader like Drumpf who turns a blind eye to police abuses and demands that we “support your local police” no matter what they do. Frankly, cops like this guy don’t deserve our support, they deserve to be in jail.
What will Drumpf say to a young woman who is raped by a man with a badge and gun? Will he invite her to a State of the Union to stand as a symbol of all those victimized by rogue cops? Or will he invite the cop?
Roger Rabbit spews:
Meanwhile, “”The Fraternal Order of Police is currently representing Officer Figueroa and he is looking forward to his day in court to be exonerated of these charges.”
Of course, a union’s job is to represent its members, but let’s remember that function — when it involves defending rogue cops — isn’t always aligned with either public interest or public safety. (How safe would you feel with this cop patrolling your street?)
There are times when cop unions have a corrosive influence on society, such as when they defend cops who murder citizens and oppose reforms to address police abuses.
Jack Webb spews:
A possible solution for these times when the police misbehave is to make the culprits really feel it when the city is sued for something like police brutality. I suggest lawsuit settlements come out of the police retirement funds. That may go a long way to stop police abuse if police members realize their retirements are at stake.
Jack Webb spews:
BTW, isn’t Monday the day those spoiled, self-important idiots try to destroy downtown Seattle? Maybe a few rogue cops might help in that situation. If some of those knuckleheads get the total shit beat out of them, maybe they’ll develop some respect for private property.

I have some pretty good friends who are SPD. Good people who have devoted their adult lives to making SPD better. It’s a struggle for them, owing at least in part to the bureaucratic nature of big city government. But they keep at it. And I’m pretty confident they do a ton to make the department better nearly every day. And they aren’t alone in that.
So you’re suggesting that they can just fuck off? You want to punish them for racist shit stains like Cynthia Whitlatch who, to hear them describe it, was being protected by top brass. Sounds like an excellent recipe for driving out all the good cops to other agencies, genius.
Jack Webb spews:
No, I want good cops to make sure the bad cops are eliminated. The idea is to get the cops to take care of the bad apples themselves so we don’t have episodes where some guy carving a stick with his pocketknife gets shot by some cop and his Glock 19.

Why is the Seattle City Attorney’s office still doing a bi annual marijuana report. For the past several years the numbers are all zeros. Still someone is having to do some work just to make sure there were no arrests, ect on marijuana. Seems like this report should be dropped, but it like much in that office is dictated by city ordinance or state law for the office to do.
For the most part it may not matter much who is in the office. So why have the voters vote on the position, why not have the city council fill it? Do you get different results because of who is in the office. After all most Seattle citizens (and others) most likely interaction with the cities attorneys office is because they got a traffic citation. So what do people think who got a traffic citation? Were they treated fairly and courteously? Did the city make out big time on the fines? Was the focus on traffic safety or the cities coffers?
Mark Adams spews:
@2 If true it looks like the officer mostly used his police cruiser.
Unfortunately this story is a she said; he said. It maybe true and it maybe a total canard. Similar to the situation the Mayor of Seattle is in. Of course the circumstances are different as the Mayor is elected and can stay at his job until the election, and after should he win re-election. If Seattle had a city manager instead it’s entirely possible he would be out on his ear, though at this point he seems to have enough support that he would still be working. Still someone lower in the totem pole might be fired by the city whether the young woman’s story is the truth or a total canard.
It’s of course possible the officer maybe proven innocent. Something the reporter does not emphasis and something RR is forgetting as well. In this country you are innocent until proven guilty. Though you maybe suspended or fired, but if found innocent then the city is going to get sued, unless they pay the back pay owed as if the man had worked the whole time. If found guilty he will probably get the book thrown at him, and probably get sentenced to the maximum sentence. He’s in Florida after all. Maybe she should have been carrying and stood her ground?
Also there is little Trump can do to support or not support local police. He has no control over state police or city police. They don’t work for him, they work for us. Police reform must be done at the local and state level. We do need and should not want the Feds to do that which we the citizens of Washington state and our local cities, town and counties should do. After all we do elect Sheriffs here, maybe RR is suggesting we should be replacing some of them. Or maybe the city and country prosecuting attorneys? Got some in mind we should replace RR?
Mark Adams spews:
@3 RR either defend unions or don’t. The man is a member of a union and he’s a cop. He is entitled to the same protections in our society any bricklayer, or plumber gets by being a member of the union or guild. Even attorneys have their organizations such as the bar, which doesn’t always have the better interests of society, but the interests of attorneys as the organization is composed of attorneys, and expressly supports their interests over the public and justice.
Mark Adams spews:
@4 Interesting, but lawyers prefer the deeper pockets of public institutions like cities, counties, states, and the federal government. Nor can the police union or fraternal organization be tied to the crimes of an individual member. Just like the ACL CIO can’t be sued because a member was involved in a traffic accident while driving a truck. There is no way for even the best attorney to go after the funds the union has in holding for a members retirement. The member does not work for the Union and the Union does not direct his or her work, therefore no way to go after their retirements. One might think old Jack Webb is a Republican and just wants to wipe unions out with his theory of law and the social contract.
Mark Adams spews:
@5 It’s May day you should go out and support workers by marching in one of their parades. They used to have some great parades in Moscow on May Day. Maybe you would enjoy the ones that happened in Berlin under Hitler.
Tomorrow may not be a good day to be in downtown Seattle or even Bellingham. People have a right to march and protest and celebrate May Day. Yes there maybe some bad apples out there. Hopefully the Seattle police department doesn’t deploy like a bunch of brown shirts out to spot open heads and loving he smell of tear gas thugs. More May Poles and the boys and gals in blue dancing around the poles.
Mark Adams spews:
@9 Actually what you are suggesting is just going to put the most corrupt of the corrupt in charge. Not like any cop has ever had to make the choice between doing his job, and getting a blow job or a freebie from a whore. Or a bribe from a dealer. In some cases a slightly bent cop may actually protect the public just as well as a honest one does. Just as a moment of weakness probably should not end the career of someone that public funds ($50,000 or more to train) have been laid out before an officer walks his or her first beat. If anything our training of officers are too short and not effective enough. So part of the solution is going to the public, and getting appropriate funding for adequate training. Something politicians of both parties are loath to do. Until training of the police is sufficient and effective we will continue to have problems in our police departments. So the problem is with us the people, because we are too cheap, and we don’t insist corporations and rich individuals should pay their share of the bill.
Mark Adams spews:
@7 If we were to do the right thing and do a Manhattan type project to create a massive energy grid based on renewables with solar panels on public buildings and private residences and the grid properly engineered so the flow of power can be both ways, and the grid improved there would be few coal jobs left, and few coal companies left in business. (There would still be some coal needed to make steal, and some medicines.) We would have to pick up the bill from the bankrupt coal companies, and that may happen even though the current administration wants to be supportive of coal and oil. The tipping point may already have been reached. So more West Virginian kids may need to move to get the good paying solar and wind jobs.
Mark Adams spews:
@10 Would you please give the entire statute. You don’t get to pick and choose what parts of a statute and which parts you don’t like.
Mark Adams spews:
