Washington went for Clinton and always will go for a Democrat for president. That means a Democrat will always get Washington’s electoral votes, which means I can write-in anyone I want for president. I’m not forced to choose between the lesser of two evils in the presidential race.
I’m glad Christie won’t be in government at the national level. He thought he’d get the attorney general slot, but it went to Sessions. Sessions is not a guy I want to see anywhere near government either, and while he’s a marginally better choice than Christie, he’s still bad for the country. I’m hoping the Senate rejects Sessions, and Trump will nominate a person who believes in individual rights versus some outback Fundamentalist Christian totalitarian statist like Sessions.

It’s a national chain, so subject to the more aggressive minimum wage increases than smaller restaurants.
If it opens elsewhere in Seattle, then clearly the closure is not related to the minimum wage increase. And one would think a chain would have the funds to set up shop elsewhere – Northgate, Sodo, wherever.
However, if it doesn’t reopen elsewhere, it’s at least some evidence that family-style restaurants are no longer competitive in the Seattle city limits.
Louisa’s (Eastlake) closed last week.
Oh, and as far as the chef shortage is concerned? That apparently is a nationwide issue.
Local restaurant deals with nationwide chef shortage
It isn’t something that is unique to Seattle and evidence that Seattle is uber-special.
I suspect that the restaurant won’t open elsewhere in the City. Employees can find jobs at other Spaghetti Factory sites or at other restaurants where demand for workers is greater. And Spaghetti Factory ownership doesn’t have to deal with the expense of Seattle rents, the cost of a new location start-up, or Seattle wage challenges.

GOP does not need a mandate at this point. What it has is control of the White House and both Congressional houses, which is plenty for now. Thank you, Senator Reid, for nuking the filibuster a couple of years ago. That will come in very handy in 2017.
Historically, Democrats do better in presidential election years and less well in mid-term election years.
So far this week I have seen two articles about the possibility that the GOP could have 60 Senate seats after the 2018 election. Here is one of them:
You are trying to spin the 2016 results as a something of a positive for Democrats. What really happened is Democrats lost the White House and fumbled a golden opportunity to retake the Senate. It was disastrous for the Democrat Party.
And, Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit, you are a moron to suggest otherwise.

@8,
I’m with you, but only to a point.
As the document observes, the Tea Party wasn’t concerned about pushing policy or about confronting distant members of Congress. They kept it local. And they kept it about opposition to Obama and the Democrats. But something your source document overlooks, is that the Tea Party focused their opposition to local matters as well. For the most part, the Tea Party only opposed things that impacted them locally, or personally. This ties in with their lack of a broad policy agenda. Because that’s not what they were about. They didn’t have policy goals for national or global issues that applied across state lines. But they opposed a whole bunch of things that did apply across state lines. They wanted to stop paying taxes they believed were being spent on other people in other places. And they wanted to see government reduced because they worried that the debts would be imposed on their children. They wanted the federal government to leave their states and their counties and towns to do as they pleased. So they opposed a whole lot of sweeping stuff. And they used a lot of rhetoric portraying the administration as over reaching and invasive.
Maybe they had a point. I might not agree with their local politics. And to the extent that their local politics might place burdens on me, I think the feds have a role.
But honestly, if these illiterate dumbfucks what to dump toxic sewage into their trailer parks, teach their lice infested spawn that Jesus rode a dinosaur, and pave their county roads with stale pizza crusts, Mountain Dew Code Red cans, and rotten teeth, I say let them.
We should oppose Trump. But only on any legislation or regulation that would burden our enlightened and progressive local authority. Otherwise, we should just stand back from the dumpster fire and roast marshmallows.

Looks like Democrats are taking Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit’s advice.
Blame the messengers: Dem boss Schumer fires staffers after November rout
With Christmas days away, nearly every member of the Senate Democratic Media Center has been fired, a senior Democratic aide confirmed to Fox News. Schumer swung the axe on Friday, according to Politico, which first obtained “goodbye” emails from staffers, including some with decades’ experience.
…
“Job creation has never been a strength of the Democrats,” a Republican aide told FoxNews.com. “But firing staffers just days before the holidays so they can play catch-up is pretty brutal.”
It’s happening in SLU too. Wurst Place is shutting in Feb because they’re taking out the building. They had a phenomenal tap list and was very affordable for the neighborhood.

ANN ARBOR, MI – Ann Arbor police say there is no evidence to support a Muslim University of Michigan student’s claim that a man threatened to light her on fire if she didn’t remove her hijab.
…
The investigation — conducted by Ann Arbor police detectives in conjunction with officials from the University of Michigan Police Department and the FBI — included interviewing witnesses and viewing surveillance video from the location where the woman said the incident occurred.
There were no witnesses to the actual event as it was reported, Lige said. Investigators said the woman also doesn’t appear in any of the footage.
“Detectives reviewed hours of surveillance video,” Lige said. “We could not find her on any video. They just weren’t there.”

There’s no plan for the purchased property yet. Not even a plan for land that cost $15 million to acquire. First a plan is developed, then submitted, then reviewed, then changes are made, reviewed again, etc. Eventually, after all of the protests and lawsuits are done with, a permit is issued.
Then it’s put out for bid, changes are made when the bids come back too high, it’s put out again, etc.
Someday, something will be done although that space may be preserved regardless, because it’s a historic building.
All that shit could take three years, or more. And yet the restaurant closes now, when it doesn’t have any place to move. It just closes.
Gee. I wonder why that is.
17
czechsaazspews:
Gee. I wonder why that is.
Answered. It just closes because the new owners of most buildings to be redeveloped aren’t going to renew a lease because they intend to remove all the tenants and start over. Sometimes the developer buys out tenants and sometimes they just sit on it and refuse lease extensions as each come due until it’s empty.
Yep, the landscape is changing and not just in $15/hr Seattle.
The era of huge dining rooms and paper thin margins of “family” restaurants in urban centers is a thing of the past. 10,000 square feet of space in almost any city is more valuable than a family feedbag can scrape together. Minimum wage is a minor factor but I can see a few other spots that won’t be around after their current lease. The $/per square foot won’t allow it unless people really are willing to pay $14 for a Red Robin burger.
Or maybe you haven’t noticed that no one is opening 200 seat eateries that aren’t in suburban strip malls anymore.

The number of restaurants within Seattle city limits affordable to those who earn low or moderate incomes is:
a) Increasing

c) Decreasing

a) Significant
b) Insignificant
19
ArtFartspews:
@9 “Louisa’s (Eastlake) closed last week.”
Yeah, I caught that. Funny thing, though. The minimum wage doesn’t hit $15 until 2021, it’s been static at (at a lower amount) all year, and does increase soon by 50 cents to a dollar an hour depending on exactly how the employer’s comp plan works. That still doesn’t exactly explain why the proprietor of a small cafe would close up shop with zero notice right before Christmas. Methinks there’s a back story here, most likely that the smallish building said small cafe was in is worth a lot less than the dirt it sits on.
20
@godwinhaspews:
@ 19
I’d suspect the back story (I don’t disagree) is a failed effort to transfer the business to some other entity.
Long-term businesses in trouble tend to fail slowly, right before they fail suddenly. Maybe it was a frozen LOC or a called loan.
My point is that there are two Seattles. There is the Capitol Hill/Belltown crowd, which piles into businesses serving the latest uber-hopped IPA and $60 ribeye. Those seem to be doing well.
Then there is the customer base of the limited-service restaurant group, and the cafe-style restaurants who tend to serve those with lesser incomes. Those seem to be faring not so well.
I just think the latter category deserves some air play by Goldy and around these parts, too.

Roger Rabbit Commentary: This is basically an argument that we can’t know anything that we don’t see for ourselves, because the news media can’t be trusted. So what you need to do is go to sources like this:
Finally caught up on my Podcastery over the last few days of shopping/wrapping/readying for family to arrive.
“In The Dark” is really good and gets into how the “stranger danger” panic of today (coddling the precious flowers is a side effect) is largely the result of one missing kid case. A case that was bungled in almost every way by the local Sheriff’s Dept.
But near the end there was a startling statistic,
King County Washington Murder Investigation Clearance rate, meaning charges were filed against someone but not necessarily convicted, from 2004-2014 16%. Yes that’s right. If you commit murder in KCS jurisdiction you stand a better than 80% chance of getting away with it.
Doing some diggin’ in 2009, running unopposed, Sue Rahr got 97% of the vote after her department cleared 4 of the 62 murder investigations they were responsible for after she took over the department in 2004.
Why is no one in print media or “Government can do nothing right” radio hosts questioning the abysmal record of Law Enforcement by the King County Sherrif’s Dept? Shockingly it’s getting better as they cleared 2 of the 4 in 2014
Willing to bet if you went back and looked at TV news stories between 2004-2009 you wouldn’t find more than a minute or two criticizing the department.
And that’s why voters are stupid and not just about this issue.

@8,
I’m with you, but only to a point.

Gee. I wonder why that is.
czechsaaz spews:
Or maybe you haven’t noticed that no one is opening 200 seat eateries that aren’t in suburban strip malls anymore.

b) Insignificant
ArtFart spews:
@godwinha spews:

If it’s successful enough, I have no doubt some agency will find a way to “protect” us all by shutting it down.

@68 Boob, calling what you do “work” may be your funniest post ever. I do the same thing as you, i.e. spend all day posting political rants on HA, but I don’t have the chutzpah to call it “work.” I’m a Democratic party hack and liberal propagandist, which however lowly is notches above a Republican blowhard like you. At least I have better material to work with. I don’t have a Medicare tit to suck on, but being a useless capitalist is almost as good.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@69 I’ve never had an issue with PSE either, because I don’t live in their electricity service area.

You can rely on two truisms about Democrats: One, they’re in it for the money; and two, they’re hypocrites.

@70
This is not a new thing at all. There are lots of breweries that operate out of warehouse spaces that have food trucks nightly or at least on weekends.
As my bar owner friend famously says, “Fuck the food! You don’t make any money on food!”
just off the top of my head:
Peddler Brewing
Black Raven Brewing
Chuck’s Hop Shops (both)
Stoup Brewing
Rooftop Brewing
Machine House Brewing
Valhalla Brewing
Tripplehorn Brewing
American Brewing
…
That covers from Edmonds to Auburn, Woodinville, Redmond and Bellevue.
It’s not much different from places like Beverige Place Pub having a binder of menus of places nearby that deliver.
Marketplaces change. I’m sure $15 an hour will kill off Tower Records, Sam Goody and Musicland with their stoner drop-outs playing music all day and rolling their eyes at your Manheim Steamroller Christmas cassette oh wait…

Here’s what we know so far: In Fort Worth, a black woman called police to complain about an adult white male allegedly “choking” her 7-year-old son for littering on his property. The white male cop who responds to the incident tells the woman, “Why don’t you teach your son not to litter?” The woman answers, “It doesn’t give him the right to put his hands on him.” The cop replies, “Why not?” The woman argues with the cop. The cop arrests her and her niece, and hauls them away in his cop car. The Fort Worth PD says it’s investigating the incident.

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Maybe we don’t know the whole story, or maybe we do, that remains to be seen. My gut reaction is, “Maybe this is why black people don’t trust the police.”
Steve spews:
@83 No matter. Doctor will spin it so that black women and their children everywhere deserve to hauled off in a cop car, although preferably shot dead.

Progressives should support the building of a new juvie facility is needed and not be NIMBys.
Though you may need a holding facility for INS to pick up people from. The courts are going to remind cities and counties they have to abide by federal law and cooperation is expected. Rather if you go to Canada or Mexico and you are there illegally and don’t pay for your train ticket you will be sent back to the US or wherever you are
