Why? Well, hard to tell, exactly, since none of them gave a reason. Maybe they read Jesse Hagopian’s FB post about a cop running up to him and dosing his face with pepper spray, and figured that if a Seattle cop could do that, so might a Baltimore cop.
Or maybe it’s because if the
protestsriots before the cops were arrested cost Baltimore $20M, theprotestsriots when the cops there are exonerated by jury are going to cost far, far more. And who wants to clean up that mess? Or find the money to do it, for that matter. On the bright side: All those people leaving means more space for those who wish to destroy:

What’s holding back wage growth, a key to an even stronger economy, is an unusually high number of people who still can’t find full-time work six years into a recovery.
In May, some 17.3 million people were classified as unemployed, involuntary part-time workers or the marginally attached. If all those people are counted, the unemployment rate in May was actually unchanged at 10.8%, according to the so-called U6 rate.
When the economy is really humming, there’s only a small gap between the higher U6 rate and the lower U3 that represents the official U.S. unemployment rate. Typically the two rates are separated by just 3 to 4 percentage points.
As the accompanying chart shows, the gap has come down sharply from a record 7.3 points in 2011, but it’s still excessively high at 5.3 points.
http://www.marketwatch.com/sto.....2015-06-05
Seattle’s doing so well any increase in U6 that might occur as a result of the minimum wage increase would probably be hidden, or overcome, by all of the other economic good news.

I’ve seen lots of stories recently that say most Americans don’t have much retirement savings. Here’s another one.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/mo.....t-savings/
It says half of Americans over 55 have NO retirement savings. That’s highly misleading, as most of these people have some sort of retirement plan through their work, and “studies” like this typically don’t count those savings. They also don’t count home equity, which is a form of savings. Older Americans aren’t as poor as these alarmists make out, which makes you wonder what their agenda is.
Still, there’s no doubt in my mind that Americans collectively have lousy financial habits, and aren’t very good at managing money or their financial affairs. This country is full of dopes who walk onto a car lot, kick the tires of the convertible, and ask the lot shark how much the monthly payment is. Middle class neighbors hum with garage sales by people trying to get rid of all the junk they wasted money on that ended up gathering dust in the garage, attic, or basement.
I’m a hoarder, too, but the only thing I hoard is stocks. Stocks are one of mankind’s most elegant inventions. They don’t take up any space, don’t have to be mowed, don’t require oil changes, pay dividends, and often can be sold for more than you paid for them (if you choose them intelligently). If you hoard enough stocks, you not only don’t have to worry about retirement, you don’t have to work either. Instead of your boss ordering you around, you can order him around, because you’re now HIS boss! So I hoard stocks, and my idea of a good time is shopping for stocks; I really don’t want anything else. You can have the overpriced convertible and the ripoff Puerto Vallerta timeshare. That stuff needs to exist because the world is full of suckers who need a way to throw their money away.
As for me, I sleep until noon if I want to, never have to fight commuter traffic, don’t have to deal with office politics, can’t be fired or laid off, never get calls from bill collectors, and don’t have a garage full of junk I don’t know what to do with.

@38 Rubio doesn’t need Hillary or Blumenthal ridiculing him. He does that quite nicely all by himself. (See #37) But for those of you not familiar with Blumenthal’s journalistic work, here it is again:
“Bush’s approach in most situations seemed a reactive combination of calculations to avoid his father’s mistakes and to reject Clinton’s policies. This was especially clear in international affairs: in his first nine months he reversed Clinton’s policy toward China, proclaiming it no longer a ‘strategic partner’ but a ‘strategic competitor’; in the Middle East, by withdrawing U.S. involvement in the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians; toward Korea, by abandoning the negotiated accord that had frozen the North’s nuclear program and by humiliating President Kim of South Korea, who was promoting North-South reconciliation, during his March 2001 visit to the White House, contributing to a wave of anti-Americanism in a country that was among the staunchest American allies; by withdrawing U.S. support from the Kyoto treaty on global warming; and by forsaking Clinton’s efforts to address the dangers of international terrorism.
“During the transition between administrations, National Security Adviser Sandy Berger arranged several extensive briefings on this last subject for Bush’s incoming national security adviser, Condoleeza Rice, and others on the Bush team, including Vice President Cheney. One briefing lasted half a day. Berger told them that Osama bin Laden was an ‘existential threat’ and told them that he wanted ‘to underscore how important this issue is.’ In another briefing, Richard Clarke, head of counterterrorism in the NSC, the single most knowledgeable expert in the government, gave them a complete tutorial on the subject. In yet another briefing, CIA officials were brought in to go over all the intelligence available on terrorism.
“Don Kerrick, a three-star general and outgoing deputy national security adviser, overlapped for four months with the new Bush people. He submitted a memo for the new National Security Council warning of the danger of terrorism. ‘We are going to be struck again,’ he wrote. But as Kerrick explained to me, he received no answer to his memo. ‘They didn’t respond,’ he said. ‘They never responded. It was not high on their priority list. I was never invited to one meeting. They never asked me to do anything. They were not focusing. They didn’t see terrorism as the big megaissue that the Clinton administration saw it as. They were concentrated on what they thought were higher priorities than terrorism.’ The Principals meeting of national security officials took up terrorism only once, after constant pressure from Clarke, on September 4, 2001, and at that meeting they discussed using unmanned Predator drone spy aircraft, but no decision was made. ‘Unfortunately,’ said Kerrick, ‘September 11 gave them something to focus on.’”
