Say it ain’t so, Joe. Ms. Warren, please run against Scott Brown for Senator from Massachusetts. Having that seat in Republican hands is an affront to God, Nature, and the American Way.
Michael spews:
I went to a planning commission meeting tonight. The evil city of Gig Harbor was telling a good, god fearing, Republican, developer, he couldn’t build whatever he wanted on his property! Teh nerve! The meeting was standing room only and 100% of the public testimony backed not changing zoning laws to allow the developer to build a big-box store. You know the Republicans are fucked when Gig Harbor goes 100% with the hippies!
As for the developer, he’s free to build a building of up to 65,000 square feet on his lot and not only will he, he’ll make a bunch of money doing it. Only difference being that he had a client in his pocket for the bigger building and now he’ll have to do a little (a very little) bit of work.*
*Developing a property IS a lot of work. But, why go though 2 years of work, only to get shot down because you can’t get the rule change you need, when you could have done a little leg work and found folks that would have fit within the 65,000 square foot rule?
I think these guys just don’t like having to follow rules.
Michael spews:

No its not. Brown worked his ass off to get that seat and the woman he ran against acted like she was entitled to it. I’m glad she lost. Plus Brown has been a bit of a disappointment to the Tea Baggers. But, now it’s time to disappoint the Tea Baggers even more and get that seat back in Democratic hands. Warren would run hard for it and wouldn’t pull any punches, that’s for sure.

@8
That’s a good example of you missing the point all together.
See, there’s this thing called humor…
The merits of the issues are that we have a community development plan that says the area can be developed with stores of up to 65,000 square feet and plenty of other people have built in the area adhering to the development plan. Which I did mention. And again there’s the humor thing. And the you missing the point thing. I was talking about Republican electoral prospects, not development.
No jobs were lost by this decision. The area will be fully developed with stores and such that fit within the 65,000 square foot plan.
By holding to the 65,000 square foot development plan economic value was persevered, not squandered.
No businessmen were shat on in the making of my post.
Since you seem unaware of what a thesis statement is, I’ve copied the thesis from my post @4 below.
Michael spews:
@9
Yep!
Roger Rabbit spews:
@8 There’s an old saying that “your freedom to swing your fist stops where my nose begins.” Developers, who strive to maximize their profits, are not the appropriate persons to decide whether the impacts of their developments are acceptable to the surrounding community. One of the reasons (there are others) for denying permission to build the larger store is because a larger store means more traffic on nearby roads, which may be inadequate to handle such a traffic volume.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Republican Hypocrisy (Again)
Wisconsin Republicans tried to recall eight Democratic state senators for leaving the state to deny the GOP a quorum for Gov. Walker’s union-stripping bill (which GOPers rammed through anyway, using parliamentary prestidigitation), but managed to force only three of them to defend their seats in recall elections. The Wisconsin GOP, as I recall, claimed the Democratic senators “didn’t do their job,” or words to that effect.
Well, someone else isn’t doing their job, where the stakes are far higher. In Washington D.C., Republican congress critters are taking the weekend off, never mind that the U.S. and global economies are on the verge of melting down thanks to their inaction on a budget compromise.
“This morning on the Senate floor, Majority Leader Harry Reid publically vented his clear frustration with House Republicans over the [fact] the House is not in session this weekend. He warned Congress has ‘days, not weeks’ to get this done. … He continued, ‘ … Time is of the essence. We are running out of time ….”
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com.....eekend-off
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Actually, I see a LOT of difference between what the Wisconsin Democrats did and what the House Republicans have just done. In Wisconsin, those state senators were trying to protect basic rights of tens of thousands of public workers from a governor who got himself elected on false pretenses — he never told voters he was going to take hundreds of millions of dollars away from teachers and other public servants and use that money, not to balance the state budget, but to eliminate business taxes for the benefit of people who are already rich.
In Congress, Republicans are stonewalling the debt ceiling, and risking a global economic meltdown, as part of their effort to take money away from workers and elderly retirees and — you guessed it — give it to the already rich.
You simply can’t discuss what happened in Wisconsin and is now happening in Washington D.C. without considering the qualitative aspects of what Republican electeds are up to. In both cases, they got into public office by misrepresenting to voters what they would do with the power being entrusted to them. In the case of the GOP congress critters now threatening to plunge the U.S. Treasury into default unless they get their way, these people were elected not to turn Medicare into a voucher program run by Wall Street or cut Social Security benefits, but by promising they would create jobs. And nobody has heard anything from them about jobs since Election Day, except for their usual mantra that the only way we can have jobs in America is if the rich pay no taxes — a premise that is proven false by 95 years of income tax history and employment data.
Well, nothing is free in this world, and the GOPers in Wisconsin and Washington D.C. won’t get a free ride from voters. They will be held accountable for (a) not doing what they were elected to do, and (b) doing things that the voters who elected them don’t want them to do. The 2012 election should be very entertaining for Democrats, but that doesn’t do anything to solve the problems facing us right now.
Roger Rabbit spews:
It6 is not necessarily untoward, however, to permit ourselves a smidgeon of sympathy for House Speaker John Boehner, who is caught between a rock and a hard place.

The FAA is still set to close down at midnight, as it’s authorization bill expires today. No action is planned in Congress to extend the FAA authorization, because Republicans are trying to tie it to further debt reductions, anti-union issues, making it more difficult for the FAA to discipline general aviation pilots (wealthy guys with their own airplanes) or corporate jets (currently there is virtually no TSA screening, corporate jet owners want explicit legislation exempting them).
Air traffic control will continue as an “essential service”, but from everything I’ve seen so far, FAA inspections will not. That means Boeing can’t delivery any more airplanes to customers until the FAA is re-authorized. Since 1/3 of the price of the airplane is paid at delivery, (the other 2/3 having been already paid), this means Boeing deliveries may grind to a halt by as early as Monday morning. And since the FAA is intimately involved the the 787 testing process, that program may grind to a halt soon.
It seems the Republicans can’t come within a hundred yards of an issue without breaking something.

Besides no one stopped him from building the samller version of the Project.

I’ve got some friends, nice people, except they are Republicans. I’m not talking about the old-fashioned Republicans, I’m talking about Limbaugh-worshiping Republicans. We get into some spirited discussions.
Anyway, they lived on a ten-acre farm out near Silver Lake, and got all upset when they found out that wetlands regulations weren’t going to allow them to do what they wanted to do with the land. “Government interference!”, they railed.
So they sold the farm (to a developer) and bought another farm further east, in the Cascade foothills. It’s a really nice house, with a great view off their back porch of the mountains and tree-covered foothills.
But about a year later, they were all up in arms. They showed me the view from their back porch. Across the valley, a developer was cutting trees to build a new sub-division – ruining their views, they said.
I tried to point out that if the developer did everything they were supposed to do, then they couldn’t object. But they didn’t care about that. He should leave the land undeveloped, they said, because otherwise it ruined their views!
I’ve come to the conclusion that once most Republicans get what they want, they just want to make sure the door gets shut behind them so they nobody else can get the same.

Debt ceiling uncertainty puts states at risk
The federal debt ceiling debate is already complicating life for state and local governments.
Maryland is postponing a bond sale that had been scheduled for Friday, after the state was warned that its credit rating would probably be lowered in the event of a federal downgrade.
California, which typically issues short-term bonds at this time of year, is working to arrange bank loans instead, citing the market uncertainty.
And state officials across the nation are trying to figure out what will happen to the federal payments they rely on for everything from Medicaid to unemployment to highway construction if a deal is not reached to raise the debt ceiling by the Aug. 2 deadline.
States whose economies rely on the federal government — including Maryland and Virginia, home to many federal employees and contractors — are at the greatest risk if there is no agreement and Washington has to decide which payments to make and which to skip.
They were among the states warned by Moody’s Investors Service this week that their credit ratings were being jeopardized by Washington — which would make it more expensive for them to borrow for costs like construction, through no fault of their own.
“For nearly 75 years we have worked hard to earn the highest credit ratings from all three rating agencies,” Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia, a Republican, wrote this week to President Obama and members of Congress, urging them to raise the debt limit. “Now your failure to get the job done is hurting the businesses and citizens of our commonwealth.”

The Senate leadership said the bill has no chance of passing in the Senate, and asked the House leadership to remain in session and present them with a “clean” bill which they could pass – without partison add-ons. If so, there ain’t no way in hell there’s going to be a deux ex machina right before the lights go out, because the one percenters stand to make an insane amount of money if we default, and to lose a bunch if we don’t. Rightwing Lunatic Kills At Least 87 In Norway
The dimensions of a madman’s horrific killing spree in Norway are only beginning to come into focus. The death toll is expected to go higher.
The bomber-shooter is in custody. Although police haven’t identified him, broadcaster NRK said he is 32-year-old 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik.
“National police chief Sveinung Sponheim told NRK that the suspected gunman’s Internet postings ‘suggest that he has some political traits directed toward the right, and anti-Muslim views, but whether that was a motivation for the actual act remains to be seen.’
“A police official said the suspect appears to have acted alone … and that ‘it seems like that this is not linked to any international terrorist organizations at all.’ … ‘It seems it’s not Islamic-terror related,’ the official said. ‘This seems like a madman’s work.’
