Looks like Obama is gonna cave on taxes, in trade for GOP assent to Pentagon budget cuts, which is no trade at all because there’s no way you reduce the deficit without taking a whack at the $300 billion a year that George W. Bush added to Pentagon spending.
Obama is no Teddy Roosevelt. He lets himself be pulled along, instead of getting out in front and leading. He lets GOP pressure push his policies instead of shaping public opinion.

I never said Wiener should resign, until it came out that he offered to probably misuse either campaign or public funds in order to help his friends lie for him (i.e., he offered to have his people coach a porn star in how to talk to the press). That’s the only point in which I suggested he resign.
What this guy is alleged to have done is perhaps a bit worse than that (and much worse than the chat thing itself), though I am not sure. Physical assault is bad, but so is misuse of funds, especially if they were public funds. They both stink. I gave Wiener the same consideration: when the tweet first went up, I didn’t care, because although unlikely, it was possible that it was just some weird mistake or an intern etc. I didn’t “give him the benefit of the doubt,” I just didn’t see anything there worthy of my consideration one way or another, even though there was far more evidence that Wiener did something wrong than there is that this judge did.

But in both countries, it was just a bubble where the wealth wasn’t real, it was based on borrowed money. The rich took their cut and dissapeared just before the bubble collapsed, leaving behind massive unemployment and debt to be assumed by the average taxpayers. In Iceland’s case, the debt was many times the entire GDP of the nation. And in Ireland, immigration from that nation due to the lack of jobs is rapidly approaching that of the Potato Famine, in terms of percentages of young people leaving Ireland to look for work elsewhere.
It’s kind of like how they bragged that the stock market heights in 2007 proved that the tax cuts and deregulation worked, only to be awfully quiet for a while when it tanked in late 2008 and early 2009. Republican policies can create a short-term bubble based on borrowed money, but in the long term voting for a Republican to manage the federal treasury is like putting a rat in charge of the cheese supply. Pretty soon, the cupboard is going to be bare.
Ironic, isn’t it, that Republicans lit the fire which threatened to burn down the whole house, and complain about the water bill when the Democrats are putting out the fire.

I’m very glad to see President Obama feels things are going great in Afghanistan, despite one double-figure death attack after another. The latest was at the Intercontinental hotel in Kabul today. The attack is still ongoing.
Afghanistan news agency TOLOnews is reporting at least 10 people have been killed. That number has yet to be independently confirmed.
Afghan officials say four suicide bombers and four gunmen attacked the hotel. Multiple explosions have been heard on the property.

Well, where are all these Republican hypocrites now? Why, they’re defending Wisconsin justice David Prosser’s act of strangling one of his fellow justices, calling it “self-defense” — can you believe these fucking people?
“Sure enough, right-wing bloggers and even Fox’s Greta Van Susteren are not condemning Prosser’s act of violence – calling it defensive – but are instead demanding that Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson (the justice Prosser called a “bitch”) to resign.”
