    So… I popped over to Crooks and Liars this morning to see if they had anything about the attempted bombing in Spokane, nothing on the bombing, but they did have a video of Arizona’s state senate president paling around with neo-nazi’s.

    Of course, longtime C&L readers are well aware that Arizona’s new Senate president, state Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, has a long and colorful history of associating with and endorsing neo-Nazis, particularly noted Arizona Nazi J.T. Ready.

    Now that Pearce is leading the national effort to undermine the 14th Amedment and end birthright citizenship, he’s eager to put all that behind him. Indeed, for the past couple of years, whenever anyone has brought up the old Pearce connections has been met with scornful and adamant denials.

    The “chart” singles out state employee pay and insurance givebacks which will effectively cut state workers’ take-home pay. Teachers? No givebacks for them.

    Hey, I’m not against teachers, even though a quarter of our state’s kids fail to graduate from high school. Like cops and firefighters and soldiers, they have a tough job, and deserve whatever we can pay them.

    I just wonder why state workers, who are equally underpaid and much more overworked, always get the shaft alone. Why doesn’t anyone look out for state workers?

    Back when I was working, it was standard practice for the Legislature to reward teachers for striking and punish loyal state workers for never going on strike by taking money away from state workers and giving it to teachers to settle strikes … but, oh, never mind …

    @1 It’s probably just a matter of time before they require Arizona schoolkids to give the Nazi salute … except there won’t be any Arizona schools after they repeal the last of Arizona’s taxes and outsource the education business to private companies employing Mexican teachers willing to work for $1.50 a day.

    Did Harry Reid really call the leader of China a dictator just before he was going to have a meal with Obama? Wow. Diplomacy at it’s worst. How does that help anything? Name calling never works, especially with the Chinese. And especially since many of Nevada’s casino’s are doing business currently with China and looking to expand. Harry Reid is a foolish person.

    And Kent Conrad and Joe Lieberman not running in 2012? The Democrats have a crapload of Senate seats up that ought to be real battles. The Republicans seem to be safe in nearly all of the 10 Seats they have up. Should be interesting to see who is next. And the Tea Party is apparently taking on Lugar in Indiana. Great times we are living in.

    @8: Nice place, but you’d have to live in Penn, Montgomery County to be exact (basically Philly’s R suburbs). And it’s 1500 miles west to anything worth recreating in (the Rockies, Canyonlands, etc.).

    For $1.8 million, You could get a heck of a piece of ground and a really nice house in the Pac NW. And live amongst basically sane people.

    Other than Zion NP, I’ve never been able to get into the desert.
    I haven’t spent any time on the east coast, but I do want to check out western NY and the Hudson River Valley. I’ve seen lots of pretty pictures.

    I’ve done the East Coast. My dad’s folks are from Philly / NJ. Traveled all over / up and down (Maine to FLA), hiked the Appalachians and Adirondacks; I used to work out of DC (up until a few years ago) and lived for few years on the eastern shore of VA/MD when I was much younger.

    There’s just way too many people — even in the hinterlands.

    Trust me, we have it very, very good here.

    I’ve been to Moab, Canyonlands, and Arches and I just couldn’t get into it. I’m such a creature of the Pacific Northwest, that I found the area kind of frightening.

    I worked in Yellowstone for the better part of a year and really, really, loved the place. Yellowstone’s on my “need to get back too” list.

    Welfare benefits for the children of illegal immigrants cost America’s largest county more than $600 million last year, according to a local official keeping tabs on the cost.
    Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich released new statistics this week showing social spending for those families in his county rose to $53 million in November, putting the county government on track to spend more than $600 million on related costs for the year — up from $570 million in 2009.
    Antonovich arrived at the estimate by factoring in the cost of food stamps and welfare-style benefits through a state program known as CalWORKS. Combined with public safety costs and health care costs, the official claimed the “total cost for illegal immigrants to county taxpayers” was more than $1.6 billion in 2010.

    @2 I had lunch today with a fellow who’s been teaching programming at one of our local community colleges for the better part of a decade. Prior to that he worked in IT for Fairview Fanny.

    This guy ventured the opinion that educators are the next occupational group that’s going to be eradicated after the journalists. For the reason, look at the current simultaneous trends of promoting the idea that teachers are vile creatures who don’t know how to teach, and the flooding of schools with technology. If the objective of eduction is to train “obedient workers”, then computerized rote indoctrination in “crank-turning 101” will do the job just fine.

    # 27: I was just reading that in Florida, voters had approved a class-size limit at 25 for K-12 schools.

    But the school district is trying to balance it’s budget by creating “e-classrooms”, where a bunch of students (up to 35 in each classroom) sit at a desk doing self-directed learning on a computer, with a classroom “facilitator” who is only supposed to deal with technical issues and to keep the students from using the computers to view porn.

    In other words, no teachers at all.

    I suspect Id lost his downturn in the current rescession, and this is the only job he could get – trolling the internet blogs for opportunities to post the daily talking points sent out by his Republican handlers. He’s probably only earning a few pennies per post.

    I can sympathise, in one downturn quite a few years ago I had to take a telephone soliciting job for a couple of months, just to make ends meet. I still feel like I need a shower everytime I remember the experience (although it gave me some valuable insight into the industry).

    AOL (headquartered in Virginia) definately has a conservative slant, so I cringe everytime I see a link to an article on AOL related to business or politics.

    But one posted today was worth reading, even if it only confirmed what those of us here at HA knew all along: after two years of wingnut lies, even the right-leaning media has finally accepted the obvious fact that it was the banks and lax oversight which caused the mortgage mess, not the homeowners.

    As the foreclosure crisis has escalated over the past several months, one overarching debate has been about who bears the most blame: homeowners or banks?

    After everything I’ve learned and written about the foreclosure mess, my verdict is: The banks are responsible for 90% of the problem, troubled homeowners 10%.

    Yes, every foreclosure involves a homeowner not paying his mortgage. But every foreclosure also involves a bank that made the loan. And usually another bank, or several more, that profited from securitizing the loan. And still another bank, or several, that profited from servicing the loan. Together, those banks have done three things that created the massive glut of foreclosures choking America’s legal systems and laying waste to its real estate markets:

    They knowingly made millions of loans doomed for foreclosure as soon as the check was written.

    They deliberately and/or incompetently failed to modify many salvageable mortgages.

    They were so careless with their paperwork and processes that they’ve undermined the rule of law, clouded the title to untold numbers of properties and complicated the processing of the massive backlog of foreclosures that hurts the economically crucial real estate market….
