Open Thread 4/8

by Carl Ballard — Tuesday, 4/8/14, 5:21 pm

– Happy home opener day, Mariners fans. It’s maybe not the nicest day for it.

– Happy? equal pay day.

– It’s always pretty to think that Washington will come together in bipartisan comity and start governing for the good of all the people. To think this will happen as a result of the vastly wealthy having even more influence than they already have strikes me as so optimistic as to be delusional.

– What Does 17% Mean?

– Here’s another benefit in Seattle for Oso if you’re interested in it.

– We should definitely keep policing other people’s weight.

– Poor, poor Representative McAllister

One of America’s worst CEOs, a guy who ran unsafe coal mines, claims he didn’t know his company’s lawyers routinely fought black lung claims.

He “told ABC News he was unaware of the legal tactics being used to thwart black lung claims …. He said those decisions would have been made by employees in the company’s worker’s comp department, and he would not have been briefed on them ….”

    http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/.....d=23220292

Roger Rabbit Commentary: He may well have been unaware of what his company’s lawyers and worker’s comp department were doing, but if so, deliberately so, because this was a guy who micromanaged his company in all other respects — including walking into mines to harangue against unions to his workers.

    Screw all the poor people.
    Help rich people get richer.

Welcome to Ryan’s America… Because in Ryan’s America, greed really is good.

Say what you will about small-town Idahoans, and their anti-government attitudes, at least they get mad and do something about dog-shooting cops.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/id.....kills-dog/

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Being a rabbit, I’m for getting rid of all dogs — they’re useless! all they do is chase rabbits! — but I understand you humans’ bizarre attachment to your dogs, given how weird you are about everything else, especially your human politics.

So, if you don’t want cops kicking dogs in the chops, and then shooting them dead, in the disabled owner’s front yard when he’s hosting a birthday party for a bunch of kids, you have to get rid of the cop, the police chief, the mayor, and the entire town council. Seems like a no-brainer.

Those Idaho townsfolk probably are wondering what possessed their police chief to hire a guy with an Arab name in the first place.

Things are looking up in the search for the missing airplane. The Aussie ship has reacquired the pings. And Doppler analysis indicates a high probability they are coming from the black boxes.

If they pull this off, and find that plane, it will rank as one of the great detective feats of all time. The made-for-TV movie will air two weeks later.

This is what the woman’s husband says about Rep. McAllister:

“I know his beliefs. When he ran one of his commercials, he said ‘I need your prayers,’ and I asked, ‘When did you get religious?’ He said, ‘When I needed votes,’” Peacock recalled. “He broke out the religious card and he’s about the most non-religious person I know.”

In Switzerland, a grenade was used in a domestic violence dispute. I know that Switzerland allows army reservists to take their assault rifles home with then, but that does not include grenades, plus, it is former Yugoslavia in origin.

    Guns vs. Knives

At Newtown, the psycho had a gun, and everyone died. In today’s spree, the psycho had a knife, and nobody died.

The NRA is only partly right: Limiting access to guns won’t keep crazy people from causing mayhem. But it sure as hell will limit fatalities, and that’s where the NRA is severely and irredeemably wrong.

I was looking at the current edition of TRAINS Magazine(May 2014), and besides a great article on competition among intercity passenger train operators in Europe, their is an interesting commentary by a veteran journalist, describing a train accident earlier this year that never happened. The reason it did not happen, was the engineer of a southbound New York-Florida passenger train in South Carolina, ignored a malfunctioning signal. It was showing a yellow over red indication, which meant, proceed with caution, when it was showing red with the dispatcher. The engineer noticed that the switch to a siding was also lined the wrong way and had pulled to a stop. The Amtrak engineer would have been cleared if he had followed the signal. The train speeding ahead of them was a juice train. Quick thinking saved lives, and earned praise from their management, and their unions.

The competition aspect is part of the European Union Railway Liberalization law, which separates national railway operators from the track owners. Something that can’t happen here, because of the host railroads would still own the track.

In the Czech Republic, the Prague-Ostrava route, has three operators, the incumbent and two private operators. Ridership has gone up. The two private operators have won on on board service, the national railway has better trains on speed. Private operator LEO Express bought new trains, but a couple rolling stock builders had a problem with an order that small(5 trains).

@15. You did, by asking the question.

    http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com.....-stabbing/
He was a described as quiet and shy white boy. I have been noting the way the news has been talking about the stabbings and they are trying so hard to establish a false equivalency, that knife violence is just as bad as gun violence.
Current stats. 4 people in intensive care, one very critical. As of 7:30 none dead. Unlike the last several mass shootings.

We need sensible gun regulation in this country.
