Might have been a good idea for the Republican led state of Alabama to accept medicaid expansion.
The system is broken in the sense that we can’t find a way to throw more people off it.
Governor Bently’s Medicaid reform is the Republican dream. Rather than a pay for service system Alabama changed to managed care at a firm controlled cost. Yep, you guessed it rationing and cuts to payments to hospitals which every Republican KNEW would lead to doctors quitting en masse if they can’t get paid for services rendered. That’s why we have to STOP Obamacare, it will lead to exactly the kinds of helath care crises we Republicans in Alabama enacted into law.
“Why that dad gum Obamacare that Alabama refuses to implement fully it will cause death panels and rationing or somethin’!”

They have found that states that embraced the Affordable Care Act have done well, while states that fought it have done poorly.

The example, effecting more than a dozen widows, was from Alabama that fought implementing Affordable Care Act, where many thousands were not allowed to get coverage due to the actions of the republicans.
I find it dishonest when conservatives cite examples of people not being covered in states that fought to avoid covering people.

SCANDAL!

Doesn’t expanding Medicaid crowd low-income earners out of private insurance and which compels them to sign themselves onto Obummercare and onto the government system? How does that help the bottom line when the young aren’t footing the bill per the Rand study Obummer likes to use in a biased fashion?
Next use of the WA Times… There was DUMMOCRETIN Senators Whitehouse and Schumer “thoughts” around law breaking, but none was found. Piddles didn’t actually look at the article, just googled.
It cites one doctor saying that as many as 10,000 new medicaid patients might seek care at his clinic but he would only accept 1000. That’s a capacity issue, not payment.
But according to Kaiser, before Obamacare about 1/3 of doctors did not accept new medicare patients (69% would so yeah 31% is not a third.) And the link says that under Obamacare, 31% of doctors won’t accept new medicare patients. Here in WA, we’re doing well as 76% of doctors accept new medicaid patients. No evidence exists to say whether the remaining 24% refuse because of payment issues or clinic capacity but it’s easy for Piddles to just jump to the conclusion that every single one of them hates Obamacare so they won’t take new patients.
So Piddles brilliant Googling lead him to authoritatively post that under Obamacare, the percentage of doctors not accepting new medicare patients is exactly the same as the percentage of doctors who would not accept new patients before Obamacare.
Brilliant, just brilliant.

@13 “you coming from Bloomfield Hills Michigan, land of RICH whitey.”
I did? Setting aside your white envy for a moment, I’m curious where you got this “information” from, because I’ve never lived in Bloomfield Hills and my family wasn’t rich.
Here’s the real scoop about my biography, putz. I was the middle of six bunnies born to a single-earner family. I left the family burrow while still in my teens, and went to another state by riding on a freight train. Then, I worked my way through college with a succession of hard and dirty minimum-wage jobs, which included sweeping floors, washing dishes, and wiping old people’s asses in nursing homes. Then I joined the military and served as a dogface private in a war. Then I used my G.I. Bill benefits to attend law school, although the government benefits weren’t enough, so I also had to borrow and work. I was too poor to have a social life; I never went to a football game or school dance, I never had a girlfriend, I never had a car and didn’t learn to drive until after I had graduated from college; all I did was work and study. This rabbit bootstrapped himself up from nothing and is a self-made soon-to-be millionaire. I’ve been as poor as any black; I’ve gone hungry; I’ve lived by eating other people’s garbage and I’ve lived in a rented basement room that once was a coal bin. In short, I know how to be poor, putz, but I’m not poor anymore because I worked my ass off to rise in a world that tries to keep poor people down. I guess nobody saw this rabbit coming, I just sorta hopped in under the radar, and it’s too late now to stop from me becoming a millionaire. I’ve accumulated capital, I own a business, I have a six-figure income, I have no debts, I don’t have to work. This rabbit is rolling in clover, but it’s all my clover, that I grew myself.
So take your Bloomfield Hills silver-spoon crap and shop it somewhere else, because your bullshit doesn’t buy you anything in my shop, bro. I’m the real deal, and I don’t take fake currency from blowhards like you.

Better spews:
@25. If by numba, you mean number, that number is in the link provided in @24. On that page, find the long table of letters and numbers. Now look about half way down the page. Look for the letters “W” and “A” next to each other, that stands for “Washington State”, then look right, (that’s the hand you probably write with), and you will see three more numbers, “76.4”. Now don’t let the dot confuse you. That’s called a decimal point. It don’t mean the number is 764 with an extra dot in it, it means that the number is 76 with a 4/10th of a fraction after it. A fraction is a numerical quantity that is not a whole number.
That means that in 2013, the writers of that page were using numbers from 2011, to show that in Washington state, 76%, that’s over three quarters, of doctors are taking new Medicaid Patients. We don’t know what the numbers are yet for 2014, because the year is not over.

Ted Nugent claims he will be dead or in Jail within a year if Obama is reelected. (At present, Ted is quite alive and NOT in jail.)
Sean Hannity says he’ll be waterboarded for charity to prove it’s not torture. (Despite many offers of payment to a charity of his choosing on completion by many media personalities…tick..tick..tick..getting close to five years and not a drop of water has spoiled Hannity’s hairdo.)

But if you bothered to look at any of the Forbes articles in the last years that national data is currently available there were 30,000 more doctors accepting new medicare patients in 2013 than there were in 2012. The new medicare rates from Obamacare took effect on Jan. 1 2013. So if doctors were going to flee the program that would have begun in 2013. But the opposite happened.
QED, what the doctors claimed the would do in your survey @6 is not in any way the reality of what happened.
Here’s and intellectual exercise for you Piddles. I know it will hurt you to try to be intellectual. Can you provide a link from any source that proves there were FEWER doctors accepting new medicare patients as you claimed in @6 after Obamacare’s medicare rate change took effect in 2013.
I see, after a full year of new horrific medicare reimbursement rates in 2013 failed to lay waste to the physician pool in America, guffaw, physicians are going to suddenly realize that those penuriuos rates the government has been paying for all of 2013 were so awful that 2014 is REALLY, REALLY, REALLY the year doctors are going to get pissed and leave the profession or cut their patient pool and decide to make less money by only accepting private insurance patients.
There’s a business truism that comes into play. Is it better to sell 1000 units at 60% of suggested retail value or 200 units at full price? But your a conservative so Econ 101 doesn’t make sense. Only the discredited Reaganomics makes sens to you.

3. No big increases in costs for next year
4. Even bigger savings on the budget deficit over the 100 billion originally forecast
We need to also consider the BAD:
1. 8 million uninsured Americans and 17,000 avoidable deaths due to republican-led states refusing to expand medicaid.
2. 240,000 people that will have catastrophic medical costs that could have been avoided.
Republican obstructionism is not without costs…and we should hammer them on the facts and the numbers.

@87 – after suffering the greatest recession, or a mini depression if you like, I don’t think the economy is in that bad of shape. It’s not in thre greates shape, but a 400 lb fat man doesn’t loose weight overnight.
When Reagan took office the unemployment rate was comparible to when Obama took office, it took Reagan about the same time to lower the unemployment rate, and he didn’t have to contend with the great depression and the global economy as it stands 20 years later.
Then there is the stock market – personally I think it is a ponzi scheme, but hey it’s at its highest ever.
And then there are the monthly employement numbers, they haven’t been negative since the recovery in 2009. No other President has probaby had positive growth every month like during Obama. Now I don’t credit him for all the success, after being in a hold so deep, you can only climb out.

It’s worth noting that, while Medicare may have lower compensation rates than some insurance (although some insurance reimburses even less, something I was acutely aware of with my former employer’s podunk insurance plan), Medicare actually reimburses doctors in a timely fashion with minimal bullshit.
Insurance companies routinely kick back completely valid claims multiple times for no reason I can fully comprehend. My best guess is that they’re hoping the doctor will give up and go away.

@88 “Wabbit’s daily CNBC post”
Stock market’s closed today for the Good Friday holiday, moron.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@93 “Then there is the stock market – personally I think it is a ponzi scheme …”
Actually, it’s not. There are some issues with cheating and market-rigging, for example, HFT (high frequency trading) is basically front-running, which is a type of stealing and is supposed to be illegal, and in fact the SEC and other authorities recently opened investigations of HFT practices, but stock itself is not a Ponzi scheme unless the underlying company is a Ponzi scheme.
Stock is nothing more or less than partial ownership of a for-profit business. Since the stock market bottomed in March 2009, stock prices have risen dramatically, but that’s because corporate profits have massively increased over that period.
The inverse correlation between corporate prosperity and the depressed labor market probably is a direct one, and not an unconnected coincidence. Corporations are prospering at the expense of workers precisely because managements have succeeded at smashing the bargaining power of workers, which has resulted in the percentage of GDP going to corporate profits basically doubling over the last few years, from about 6% of GDP to over 11% of GDP. This has resulted in a gigantic waterfall of cash raining down on shareholders.
Stocks can hardly be considered overvalued in terms of the rewards being paid to shareholders today. The stock market’s overall valuation, as measured by the price-earnings (P/E) ratio, is about average in historical terms.
In short, this is a great time to be a shareholder and a terrible time to be a worker. That’s why I left the Labor class and joined the Capitalist class.
There are many different ways of getting money. From every angle, work is the worst way of getting money there is. I don’t work. I sit on my fat rabbit ass, doing nothing and producing nothing, while corporate dividends pour into my bank account like winter rain in Seattle.
Despite evidence of cheating and market-rigging in the financial markets, investors like me can still make money from stocks, and it’s really workers who have the deck hopelessly stacked against them. That’s why I believe we should all be capitalists and absolutely no one should do any work in this country. Work is obsolete and we should just abolish it and pay corporate dividends to everyone.
” … but hey it’s at its highest ever.”
Not really. Only in nominal terms. The popular stock indexes are not indexed for inflation, and if you adjust for inflation, they are a long way from their all-time highs.
Puffy Butt spews:
@104
How has the stock market performed since inception with respect to inflation? Is it measurable? Say in 1995, what ever the high for that year was, when adjusted for inflation, was it at its high or is what you said also apply? Take the DOW for an example.
Puffy Butt spews:
@98 – I have some charts I’d like to show you too, taken from the Bureau of Labor Statistics
http://data.bls.gov/timeseries.....w=net_1mth
but I need to load them to a server first to link to them. I have the ability, but not sure I want to do that, being it is a personal website.
But take the Jobs Growth and the unemployment data from the site, and you will see that under Obama things are that much worse than during other presidents. Yeah, presently not the best, but given coming out of a great recession, things aren’t that bad. Republican Austerity wouldn’t have resulted in nearly as good results, in my opinion, take Europe nations for examples. And other than the great GWB recession, we haven’t been in a recession since for over 5 years. Not sure other Presidents can say the same thing.
Today’s economy is not yesterday’s economy. Maybe jobs never come back.
Puffy Butt spews:
Puffy –

Look at the left side (GWB) and then look at the right Side (Obama) – reference to the great recession. Not much difference in job growth.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@105 I can’t give you precise figures off the top of my head, but stock returns have to exceed inflation over the long haul, or people won’t invest in stocks.
Yes, it’s measurable, and while again I can’t give you exact numbers without looking it up, stocks’ real return after inflation (see below) in typical economic conditions, with average inflation and interest rates, probably is somewhere around 3% to 5%. That might be a little low.
Most, if not all, investors understand the concepts of “nominal” and “real” returns. The real return is the nominal return minus inflation. For example, if inflation is 2% and a stock’s yield is 5%, the real return is 3%. That’s what the investor makes after adjusting for inflation.
Although inflation is very low right now, nominal yields on savings accounts, CDs, Treasuries, and short-term bonds are even lower, so many fixed-income investments are paying negative real returns right now. That has driven investors to so-called “risk” assets like stocks.
This was a deliberate goal of Bernanke’s Fed policies, which are being continued by new Fed chief Yellen.
But I don’t like fixed-income under any economic conditions. For as long as records have been kept and statistics are available, stocks have outperformed fixed-income investments by a large margin. In addition, in current conditions, bonds are actually riskier than stocks, because bond prices are guaranteed to drop when interest rates rise; and when interest rates are zero, there’s only one direction for interest rates to go — up. Which means bond prices must go down.
Roger Rabbit spews:
A quick internet search comes up with figures for stocks’ inflation-adjusted real return of around 5% to 6.5%, depending on which stock index (usually the S&P 500) and time period you use.
The result also depends on whether the person doing the calculation subtracts taxes and trading fees, commissions, and expenses. The latter methodology gives a figure of 5.23% for the period 1980 – 2010 based on the S&P 500, according to one source I just looked up.
My gut impression is these numbers are in the ballpark. These are averages, of course. Stock market returns vary from year to year.
The argument is significant because conservatives are trying to turn public pensions into a political issue. They argue that public pensions are drastically underfunded and will require taxpayer bailouts, which is a lie and just an excuse for expropriating pension funds.
These same people argue that all mortgage loans, consumer loans, and student loans must be repaid no matter what, because contracts are sacred obligations that must be honored. Except they’re perfectly willing to break union and pension contracts at will.
The key to refuting conservatives’ anti-pension bullshit arguments is the rate of investment returns that pension fund managers can reasonably expect to consistently earn for their funds over time. The pension fund management industry has adopted a nominal return of 8% as a standard benchmark.
About a year ago, one of our HA trolls took issue with the 8% figure, claiming it was hopelessly unattainable. This argument, of course, is crucial to conservatives’ attacks on public pensions, because if pension managers can earn a consistent 8% return on investment, there is not a pension problem in this country, except in a few isolated cases where municipal budgets have been poorly managed, as in Detroit.
So, how attainable is 8%? I argued it’s easy for an ordinary investor to make 8% in the stock market most of the time. The troll, who has since disappeared, mocked me for saying this.
The stock market’s actual returns last year were on the order of 30%. This obviously doesn’t happen every year, but let’s just say 2013’s stock market returns went a long way to repair whatever remaining pension funding problems we had in America and you don’t hear very much about this issue anymore.
As for me, if I make only 8%, I’m having a lousy year. My blue-chip stocks earned a 27.43% return last year. I’m not sure what inflation was, but if we assume around 2%, my real return above 25%. Keep in mind the 8% benchmark is a nominal rate, not a real rate.
We’ve had a much tougher stock market in 2014 to date, but even so, my annualized rate of return on my blue-chip stocks for this year is 9.9% as of yesterday.
Stock investing is not nearly as complicated, difficult, or risky as some people would have you believe. Just stick to the same big-name stocks everyone else owns and you’ll do fine. Buy them during dips and corrections, when yields are above 3%, and you’ve got at least 3% of your 8% just from the dividends. Reinvest the dividend income and let it compound; the returns will keep getting bigger and bigger. The annual dividends I get on my Starbucks stock amount to almost 40% of what I paid for the stock. If you simply buy good blue-chip stocks that raise their dividends every year, and sit on them for 15 or 20 years, eventually all of your stocks will pay returns like that.
I did a calculation for a young relative of mine, who is just starting out in life, that showed by making modest assumptions about the growth rates of dividends and capital gains, a one-time investment of $50,000 today would provide $42,500 a year of dividend income 40 years from now, when that person reaches retirement age. There’s nothing fancy about this; it’s simple math done on a calculator. If you multiply $1.00 by 3%, you’ll get the same result every time; arithmetic is way more reliable than any boss or corporate personnel department, and most companies treat their shareholders (i.e., owners) way better than they treat their employees. If you’re an employee, you’re a cost and a liability; if you’re a shareholder, you own the place, and you’re the board of directors’ boss, and they’re the boss’s boss.

@107 Is that moron puddy trying to argue that Obama has been a job destroyer? If he is, just show him the “bikini graph” again.

Roger Rabbit spews:
The difference between the economic records of Democratic and Republican administrations is so huge it’s embarrassing.
When you show the actual numbers to Republicans, they’ll come back at you with something like, “yes, but, it was a Republican Congress that created all those jobs.” And for periods when we had Republican presidents, their answer of course is, “yes, but, it was a Democratic Congress that caused that recession.”
The reality is that Republican economic policies are boneheaded, wrong, and just don’t work. But they can’t afford to admit that, can they, because the obvious solution to that problem is to never vote for Republicans.
From Harding In 1921 to Bush in 2003:
–Democrats held White House for 40 years and Republicans for 42.5 years.
–Democrats created 75,820,000 net new jobs — Republicans 36,440,000.
–Per Year Average: Democrats 1,825,200, Republicans 856,400.
–Republicans had 9 presidents during the period of whom 6 presided over a depression or recession.
–The Dow Average grew 52% more under Democrats.
–GDP grew 43% more under Democrats.
Comparing Clinton to Reagan:
–Jobs grew 43% more under Clinton.
–GDP grew 57% more under Clinton.
–The Dow Average went up 700% more under Clinton..
–The NASDAQ Composite Index grew 18 times more under Clinton.
–Federal spending grew 28% under Clinton, but 80% under Reagan.
–Federal debt grew by 43% under Clinton but 187% under Reagan.
–Deficits grew by 112% under Reagan; Clinton produced a large surplus.
–National income grew 100% more under Clinton.
–Personal income grew 110% more under Clinton.

The Obama administration announced today it is delaying a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline while the Nebraska courts resolve legal issues affecting the pipeline’s route, which makes sense and seems necessary.
Republicans, of course, decry the delay and want the pipeline built NOW even though nobody knows where it will go. They claim Keystone XL will help make America energy-independent and create jobs. It will do neither. Keystone XL will simply transport Canada tar sands oil to the Gulf coast for export to foreign countries, and once it’s built, will provide fewer than 50 permanent jobs.
The only reason to approve Keystone XL is as a favor to our Canadian friends. Keystone XL does nothing for America. Therefore, I think it’s reasonable to spend the time needed to ensure the pipeline’s route will bypass environmentally sensitive areas and will be built and operated safely. Hasty planning, decision making, and construction is the last thing you want with a project like this.
I say spend the time and money necessary to do it right.
