I dunno, Carl. The perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks operated from bases in Afghanistan, then controlled by the Taliban, who gave them sanctuary. These attacks were acts of war, and the U.S. had to eliminate those bases to prevent further such attacks. The ongoing war in Afghanistan has been waged to keep the Taliban out of power so that country doesn’t become a terrorist haven again. Plus, strictly from a humanitarian standpoint, the people of Afghanistan are better off not living under Taliban rule. There’s nothing democratic about them; the Taliban rule by the gun, and are not people you can negotiate or reason with. I’m inclined to think this war was justified. Whether we should still be there is an altogether different issue, although I will say that I’d hate to see a Taliban takeover of Afghanistan again.
My issue is with Bush’s invasion of Iraq, a country that did not attack us, was not a threat to us, and had no Al Qaeda presence until we created a power vacuum there. Saddam not only didn’t collaborate with Al Qaeda, but considered them rivals for power, and kept them out of Iraq. Saddam was a monster, and the world is better off without him, but the Iraq War wasn’t necessary for our security, was costly in blood and treasure, and created a lot of new problems.
The middle class voting en mass for Republicans in the mid-terms because they received a $1.50/week tax cut. This had been Doctor Dumbfuck’s bread and butter for the last few weeks. That the doctor has disappeared since the Pennsylvania special election informs me that he has failed to come up with anything to replace it.

There is a video of the collapse taken by a security camera. If you watch it you can see the point of where the bridge fails near the end of the bridge (where the cracks were said to be).
When I first seen the collapse on the news it struck me as odd that the span of the bridge was “excessive” for what appears to me to be a relatively thin slab structure. But it looks to me that the roof or canopy is what failed and as it collapsed the weight of that pancaked the main slab or walkway. Just my own observation from 1500 miles away.
Concrete is strong in compression and much weaker in tension – steel reinforcing bars are installed to give it its tensile strength. I suspect not enough reinforcing bars were used.
