I’ve been purchasing individual/family coverage for more than a decade. $490 for a family of four would have been a unicorn policy ten years ago. Most likely this is an apples to orangutans comparison of an unregulated high deductible catastrophic coverage plan with high out-of-pocket and low coverage cut-off to a more realistic plan. And if you watch the video completely you’ll see that for some bizarre reason this woman is still buying her plan outside of her state exchange so no tax credit. I’ve seen plenty of this in the last two years. People, even fairly intelligent people, are just waaaay over their heads shopping for individual coverage. I’m guessing Ms. O’Donnell’s situation is more common than it should be. The system for buying individual and family health insurance completely changed. But she did nothing to adapt. And she may not have been getting much for $490 per month. But she was lucky and didn’t really need more than that. Had some serious acute or chronic medical crisis arisen, I doubt the $490/month policy would have kept her out of personal bankruptcy. Unless she’s very wealthy. In which case, why the fuck should we care?

@61 Actually I was mentioning it because there is a reason why we have that saying from the courts about not crying fire in a crowded theatre. I don’t think that would count in a theatre that was actually on fire. Prior to electric lights fire in a theatre was a common occurance so people would panic if someone said there was a fire. I think today we have lost that fear. Theater shootings have always occurred and the mass shootings are extremely rare as a theater is a poor location to shoot people to murder them.
