Originally the bailout plan was to buy up the debt paper which was dragging down the banks and investment firms, with the public then owning an interest, though indirectly, in the real estate secured by the mortgages included within those bundled securities.
Then the idea was that the bailout plan was to provide for “looser credit” so that banks wouldn’t fail, and small business could meet their payroll.
But now, only a couple of weeks after the bailout plan was adopted, the Treasury Dept. is giving the bailout money to banks and other financial institutions for the purpose of – buying other banks and financial institutions.
Banks to use bailout for lending, acquisitions
Sure, they are putting lipstick on this pig by claiming that it is consolidation of the weaker banks by the stronger ones, thereby preventing more failures. But there are no rules in place here. The Treasury Dept. is using it’s sole discretion to determine who gets to buy, and who gets bought. Fortunes are being made an lost at the whim of the current administration.
Reminds me a lot of the circumstances under which former state-owned Soviet businesses were turned over to an oligarchy of politically-connected “businessmen”, who became billionaires overnight without any labor or capital invested other than their political connections.
It’s the last gasp of the Bush administration’s looting of the federal treasury, and the American taxpayer for the next two generations, for the benefit of their cronys.
