Gee, the Fed cuts interest rates a half point (to 1-1/2 percent), and the stock market STILL goes down 139 points in the first 45 minutes??? It’s at 9,307.33 now. I’m beginning to wonder if it will go through the 9,000 floor before the week is over.

Most of us have retirements in 401(k) plans where our investment options are limited to a selection of mutual fund plans. In other words, our retirement savings is dependent upon the general health of the economy.
My own 401(k) plan now has the same balance as it had five years ago, despite me putting in 15% of my income and my employer putting in a 3% match. In actual practice, the results of the Republican Economic Plan has been a 100% tax on my retirement savings over the past five years, PLUS an added tax on the value of my money which was already accumulated.
And McCain, who’s economic plan is essentially to continue with the Bush economic plan, claims that it is OBAMA who’s going to raise my taxes????
McCain says we can’t afford any more taxes. What we REALLY can’t afford is another four years of Republican economic policies.
I thought that “A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage” was Hoover.

A Simple Idea
The first step in legalization of marijuana ought to be rationalization. There is simply no scientific support for the “theory” that marijuana is a dangerous drug.
A major reason I find Lee’s strident advocacy of medical marijuana wrong headed (other than his sinking to abusive name calling) is that he is just as bad as the opponents of marijuana is misusing facts. Everytime he posts one of these stories I wonder what the real facts are? Is this patient someone really in need of marijuana or just some worshiper?
In someways this issue is a lot like global warming. The Luddites of the 4R party (radical religious republican remnant) claim to have knowledge that is superior to that of the huge mass of the scoientific community. This gives me an idea, sometihng on which I would expect thehim (Lee) would agree …..
One of the most effective tools in turning the tides of opinion in re global warming has been Gore’s movie. There must be dozens of visible figures, accepted leaders, with Gore’s stature who could host such a movie revealing just the facts about marijuana. What if Lee and his community turned their efforts to funding such a flick?
The star would have to be someone with gravitas. The movie could transform use of marijuana into a mainstream issue.
Or we can pretend that marijuana is the gift of Krishna.

Lets hope so. She has not, in my opinion, run as a good a campaign this year .. too much focus on the war and too little on Obama. If she wins, it will be on hiscoat tails and I hope she takes lessons from Se, Murry in how to be a representative rather than from McDermitt and how to be a grandstander.
@5 The conventional wisdom in a stock market downturn is don’t panic sell, hold on, it’ll come back. But this market seems so bottomless I believe some people who’ve seen their retirement savings shredded are dumping stocks and abandoning the market. This meltdown will destroy the public’s faith in 401(k)s and other self-funded retirement schemes. The 2008 Republican Debt Collapse will permanently alter our society.
@13: If all the democrats win, then at least we will get to fix all the problems the republicans have made. It is time for the grownups who actually believe in making government work to fix things – instead of the juveniles who want to tear down governemtn and end regulations – except when the economy goes into a spoiral due to lack of oversight and regulations.

Would you advise that the longer someone’s time horizon for retirement, the less they should consider jumping ship? In other words, if someone is going to retire in, say, 10 to 20 years, should they just ride it out?
@7 The Republican Economic Plan is that you have to work until you die, for ever-decreasing wages, so they can get richer and richer without working at all.

Actually, Eyeman comes out with an initiative for virtually every ballot, like clockwork.
Eyeman has turned what was supposed to be the rare direct actions by citizens into a profession with initiatives as his regular business output. In one business cycle he took money from professional gambling interests to promote his casino initiative (thinly disguised as a property tax measure), and also promoted a measure against gay marriage (which ended in a dispute with the churches over whether Eyeman or the churches owned the database of the signer’s names and addresses, which was apparantly his motive for persuing the initiative in the first place).

Doesn’t sound like he’s going to take a hatchet to the war budget either.
It’s all about well-connected Republicans using the taxpayers as their own cash-machine. And when the government fails or goes broke they see we told you so.
When the Dems get back in, watch the judicial committees in the Congress and the prosecutions. If you see a lot of crooks going to jail and giving back their loot then we’re getting back on track. If not, then it means we have more housecleaning to do.

The Dems HAVE been back in for the last two years. First thing they did was take impeachment off the table. Most recent thing they did was take their marching orders from Bush on this stupid bailout bill.

I’m guessing that some of them will be the people who ushered in the longest economic expansion in history with jaw-droppingly low unemployment rates and rising incomes for all.
You mean that expansion based on the dot com bubble?
After Obama wins, and the Democrates consolidate their control of Congress by winning additional seats in both houses of Congress in November, expect the following:
(a) Republicans will, by February, be blaming the Democrats for not “solving” the financial problems, budget deficits, national debt, health care, and energy problems which the Repubicans spent a full eight years (plus) screwing up royally.
(b) As their personal finacial situation deteriorates, they will seek outsiders to blame (minorities immigrants) for their current diminished status.
(c) In the meantime, Republicans in Congress will make every effort to obstruct any reform or investigation to solve the problem, all in a partison effort to conceal their own culpability and drag the problem out longer so they can claim that the Democrats are at fault.
The hard part some four years from now will be reminding people what it was like during the Bush administration, for comparison purposes. So many people will want to blot it out of their minds. And there was so much bad news, so often, and so many misdeeds where we only see the tip of the iceberg, that it just gets lost in the details.
