So proud of Seattle for divesting from Wells Fargo. If you do enough crap for long enough, you start to make enemies. For the foreseeable future banking is probably going to be ugly and harmful (it doesn’t have to be that way, but it does need to be regulated better). But at least the city can collectively stop spending its money on the worst of banks.

People are going to need them to do city business at whichever bank replaces Wells Fargo. At least until Wells Fargo acquires it.
It’s unclear whether the banks would be suitable candidates because the FDIC doesn’t indicate whether any of the assets are already tied up in collateral agreements or whether the banks meet additional city requirements.
The deal-breaker for many of the smaller banks could be the city’s requirement for an adequate number of branches to serve the city’s 80 payment centers. City law doesn’t define what qualifies as an “adequate number of branches.”

An adequate number of branches is a number sufficient that Carl doesn’t regret what he just posted.

@7 “The primary functions of the Department of Education are to ‘establish policy for, administer and coordinate most federal assistance to education, collect data on US schools, and to enforce federal educational laws regarding privacy and civil rights.’ The Department of Education does not establish schools or colleges.
“Unlike the systems of most other countries, education in the United States is highly decentralized, and the federal government and Department of Education are not heavily involved in determining curricula or educational standards (with the recent exception of the No Child Left Behind Act). This has been left to state and local school districts. The quality of educational institutions and their degrees is maintained through an informal private process known as accreditation, over which the Department of Education has no direct public jurisdictional control.
“The Department’s mission is: to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access. Aligned with this mission of ensuring equal access to education, the Department of Education is a member of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, and works with federal partners to ensure proper education for homeless and runaway youth in the United States.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Yeah, I see why Boob and his fellow Republicans want to get rid of ED. In fact, they’ve despised ED ever since Jimmy Carter signed into law its creation in 1979. Reagan immediately tried to get rid of it, but wasn’t successful.
Why? well, you know, civil rights and homeless kids and ESL. All bad. Title IX, bad. The federal government hasn’t interfered much in local school curricula, except for NCLB, which was a Republican initiative.
Still, now that we’re forced to live under another popular-vote-losing Republican president, caution is warranted concerning the potential for federal interference in local schools. They might be tempted to use ED as an instrument to replace science classes with Bible classes. Of course, that wouldn’t happen unless you got a president dumb enough to appoint a Christian crusader as Secretary of Education, and a Republican senate dumb enough confirm such an appointee.
If that were ever to happen, you might see big-time violations of students’ constitutional rights. Especially non-Christian students. And forget about ESL ever being taught again. If you don’t already speak English, you don’t belong here.

I have deep Seattle familial roots. So if you want to make a point you could ask where Nordstrom stock was when I vested in the early 90s and how many times it has split since then. I’ll probably have a bit more of it when the previous generation shuffles off… We like to have holdings in select PNW companies in my family. It apparently creates jobs here.
If memory serves the last time it split it was worth about $25. Now I have twice as many shares as then worth $44/share. And it still pays dividends every quarter.
I know, this Wall Street stuff is complex.

That’s one way of looking at it.
To my knowledge I hold no PacNW stocks unless they are in a mutual fund holding. Except pretty small positions in Microsoft and in Intel, which I can’t come up with a good reason for holding. I think I sold naked puts and the stock price dropped and the shares were put to me, and I haven’t sold them yet.
The way I look at it, my career was here, the former practice is here, and all of my real estate holdings are here. I’m already extraordinarily heavily invested in the PacNW.

begin to see evidence that paid lip service yielded no benefits, and Trump delivers a few?
Oh, shit. I forgot.
It already happened.
Clinton’s poor performance among union households appeared to especially damage her in crucial Midwestern states. Obama won Ohio in 2012, besting Romney in those households by 23 percentage points. Clinton actually lost Ohio’s union households to Trump by 9 points, according to exit polls. The state went to Trump.
Michigan would have been an easy victory any other year — Democrats had won the state since 1992 — but it’s currently still too close to call. Exit polls show Clinton holds only a 13 percent advantage among union households there. Obama beat Romney in union households by a whopping 33 percent in 2012. A similar scenario played out in Wisconsin this year, another state that went to Trump.

Hey are they going with a credit union? Or set up the Credit Union of Seattle. Or go to the Credit Union the employees of the City of Seattle own. That might ignite some interesting ethics arguments at the State Auditor office.
Otherwise the city goes from paying money to one dirty scum bag bank to another dirty scum bag bank,.
Mark Adams spews:
I was listening today to NPR and there was a short story on a hearing at the legislature or somewhere about strengthening Washington States background checks when someone attempts to purchase a gun. That the state needs to require that the State Patrol do something more than ignore being told someone who can’t buy a gun because of Protective Order (or other reason), and that the person being protected under a Protective Order be notified. A woman spoke that she is still scared of her ex after all these long years, and tried to remain hidden, and the state needs to protect her, and she should be notified if her ex attempts to buy a gun.
I’m not sure she is any safer if this bad man (or woman) doesn’t have a gun. If they are a determined person they can use many other things to kill or injure her, some I would guess would be far more unpleasant that a gunshot. Or that she just prefers to being garroted,. stabbed, beaten, run over, poisoned, ect rather than being shot, probably this ex is totally ok to oblige her wishes.
I do wonder about the ability of Washington state to protect her, and just what are her responsibilities to protect herself. I think she needs to take a page out of RR book, and she needs to purchase an appropriate pistol, learn how to use it appropriately to protect herself, and spend some time on the firing range. Perhaps expanding RR theories the state of Washington rather than issuing a Protective Order should purchase said gun, lessons, and time at the range for the woman (or man) in these dire circumstances.
Perhaps she should join the US guard, or join the IDF. Hire a bodyguard.
I do think these are serious issues, though the options the court has in dealing with the issues is to do noting or use very blunt laws depending on how the court weighs the evidence, statements ect. Some bad exs get off the hook though some not at all guilty exs get a PO of protection against them that can be draconian in its effects even if they never intend to speak to, see the person who is being protected as long as they live.

Guess they can go work at those software companies…oops those soft ware companies that ran to Canada won’t be here,
Maybe Boeing workers should make sure Boeing does not go to robots, and maybe the State of Washington should help. Or is the state too busy being political in the Federal courts over Presidential orders that were ok under Obama. Of course we are building some of those bombers and drones delivering those bombs in five of those nations on that list. We like bombing those countries here in Washington, and then their refugees cam come here. That just makes sense because we are just so compassionate.

As our navy ships play with Iranian naval ships. If they think they can prevail here they should believe they have the power to dictate military strategy and America’s war making capability, and can stop any American President from making war as that could be bad for colleges and corporations here in Washington state.
President Trump is going to win this one in the end. The President can exclude any group and that is exactly what the government attorney should have told the court when the judge asked the question, He should have said The President can order that your honor, but this Presidential order does not say that.
By the way exactly how many visas can a US judge issue? The courts cannot make the President or the Department of State issue Visas. There is a limit to the power of the court which the court ruefully learned under President Andrew Jackson, and the US courts try very hard not to get deeply into certain political issues just for this reason. There is a practical limit on the power of the court and the courts prefer those limits to remain in the shadows.
The courts should in this case tell Washington and Wisconsin they have no standing. This issue is between the Congress and the executive branch and the states are free to have their Senators and Representatives take this up in the proper venue with the Executive branch. I can’t wait for the Governor and AG to tell the Senators and Representatives to go out and do the states bidding as at least a few Representatives are property going to tell them to stick it, and by the way stop playing politics you guys lost the Presidency, and stop wasting the tax payers money on this frivolous court cases.

Well, it was sorta hard not to notice when he took a bullet, at his age, at one point was pronounced dead by ABC’s Frank Reynolds, and ended up walking away with some nicely publicized jokes he told the surgeons (“I hope you’re all Republicans.”) and his wife (“Honey, I forgot to duck.”) during the event. What, two months after inauguration? He’s already a star.
Oh, and then there was that PATCO thing, also early on. That was when I really began to take notice. I had voted for Carter. PATCO might have made me a Republican. I can’t come up with any other reason why I started leaning right. Shutting down a union that was trying to hold the country hostage seemed………..appropriate.

It’s not actually difficult to get shot in the United States. It’s far more common than in any other country which has potable water and electricity.
Surviving a shooting is much easier when (a) you have people around you to take bullets for you, and (b) when you have comprehensive, government-provided health care thereafter. Can we take your statement as an endorsement of the latter for all Americans — or just the ones you want to think of as heroic?

Kellogg’s stock saw a decline and its brand perception online took a deep negative nosedive last year following the cereal maker’s politically-driven attack on Breitbart News and its 45 million monthly readers. The company complied with demands from obscure left-wing advocacy groups, who pushed a social media campaign to coerce companies away from advertising on Breitbart.
Charles said Breitbart News and its tens of millions of readers “aren’t aligned with” the cereal maker’s “values as a company.”

Btw, how did you enjoy that Reagan air traffic control in the aftermath? Are you still alive? Good. Did a lot of cross-country driving in this days, did you? Well, we have good highways, so that’s lucky. And did you notice the ATC workers were unionized again within a few years?
The real story of the PATCO strike involves the usual knife-in-the-back you get when you try to do business with Republicans:
“MCCARTIN: Well, it’s a long story in a way. I’ll quickly summarize it. But first let me go to something Elliot said. This union had been attempted to be formed as early as 1960. It wasn’t actually formed until 1968. Shortly after that, Richard Nixon was elected. And in the first years of PATCO trying to establish itself as a federal union, it dealt with a Republican president, Nixon. And what it found is that the Nixon administration in the early 1970s was prepared to make deals with unions in order to improve its standing, looking forward to running for reelection in 1972, and PATCO was able to get some concessions from Nixon that led PATCO leaders to endorse Nixon in 1972. They actually got their first contract with the federal government under that Republican president.
“So when Ronald Reagan ran in 1980, PATCO already had a history of being able to negotiate with presidents from both parties. Reagan, of course, opposed the incumbent Jimmy Carter in the 1980 election. And Elliot came to work and worked his first years as an air traffic controller during the Carter administration. Carter was not be loved by air traffic controllers, and his FAA was a very, very tough negotiator with PATCO. It did not concede a lot of the major issues that Elliot just brought up. And so PATCO basically went to both candidates and both parties and said, who’s going to help us the most? And actually Reagan reached out to PATCO. He wanted a few unions to endorse his candidacy. He saw the air traffic controllers as a union that he could work with. Most controllers were military veterans. Many of them were socially conservative. And he felt if any union could be brought into the Republican tent, maybe PATCO would be that union. So he and PATCO basically worked out a deal, and he promised that he would do what he could for the union in their negotiation when it came up in 1981. So it was a deep irony that PATCO did endorse Reagan in 1980. Reagan won. PATCO expected big returns from that endorsement. But when the negotiation actually unfolded in 1981, they were deeply disappointed. They decided to strike. But that was a bridge too far for Reagan. He was not going to tolerate a strike. And that’s what led to that terrible conflict.
“DESVARIEUX: So, essentially Reagan broke his promise.”

My guess is any day now.

@ 262
…ineligible felons…voted…
The rest is really unnecessary, Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@266 Back at you, Doctor Dumbfuck. As Paul Harvey used to say, here’s the rest of the story. Approximately 1,100 ineligible felons voted in that election. Why? Because no one, including the Republican secretary of state and county auditors of both parties, knew they were ineligible. In fact, their parole officers told them they could vote, and so did county election officials in virtually every county of the state. The law was misunderstood and misapplied by those responsible for administering it. NOBODY got it right. The least culpable of all were the ineligible felons who voted because the state told them they could. And because most of Washington’s ex-felons are white males, and most white males voted for Rossi, these ineligible voters overwhelmingly voted for Rossi (which is why Rossi’s lawyers tried to sell their fictitious statistics to a skeptical Republican judge with prisoner data from New Jersey). Now eat cat shit.
@godwinha spews:
Some pretty humorous video of DC protesters trying to stop DeVos today as she entered a middle school for a meeting with a teacher’s union.
What a sad bunch of sore losers. Sticking their feet in front of a creeping car and then wailing that they were run over. Except the police were right there and said it didn’t happen.
You backed a horribly flawed candidate. It didn’t work out.
Pussies gonna pussy, I guess. The video will come in handy next year.
Steve spews:
“The rest is really unnecessary”
Especially if you want to ignore the fact that it’s Republicans doing the voter fraud. And the voter suppression. And the gerrymandering. And making desperate appeals for help from Russia. And to think that Republicans are somehow doing all this while fucking goats, those clever fascist bastards.
Steve spews:
“Pussies gonna pussy, I guess.”
Trump gonna grab’em, I guess.
Elijah Dominic McDotCom spews:
I have it on good authority that almost every single week some half-wit toothless ignorant sister-fucking hillbilly Trailer Trump American places a loaded handgun in the possession of a toddler and somebody gets shot.
But the enumerated right of a citizen militia member to own a black powder musket for use in times of national crisis obliterates any concern for safety.
Why don’t hillbillies consider the un-enumerated right of citizens to access the ballot just as important?
Educated, affluent, well-read, healthy, liberal elites understand that a ballot will do more to prevent tyranny than an HK416. 2018 provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate this principle.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@268 Sticking their feet in front of a creeping car and then wailing that they were run over. Except the police were right there and said it didn’t happen.”
Sure that wasn’t taped in the White House press office?
Roger Rabbit spews:
@266 The Reader’s Digest version of “ineligible felons surveyed by the media voted for Rossi over Gregoire by a 9-to-1 ratio.”
Elijah Dominic McDotCom spews:
“SEE YOU IN COURT!”
Um, never mind.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Meanwhile …
“Four North Carolina voters sued a political activist for libel Wednesday, claiming he falsely accused them of voting illegally last November because they were felons or had voted in other states. … ‘This is the first time we have heard of someone wrongfully accused of voting illegally sue to set the record straight,’ Leonard, the group’s senior advocacy director, wrote in an email. ‘People should not get away with lying about voter fraud.'”
The defendant is a former supporter of defeated GOP Gov. Pat McCrory.

“We take Sean Spicer at his word that Judge Gorsuch did not mean to distance himself from Donald Trump’s attacks on the judicial branch,” Zac Petkanas, a senior adviser for the Democratic National Committee, said in a statement. Mr. Petkanas called it proof that the nominee “will be nothing more than a rubber stamp for this out-of-control Trump presidency.”
That is just some damn fine trollery. Damn fine. When this hillbilly catastrophe is finally over maybe DeVos can get Spicer an Amway route.
Roger Rabbit spews:
One of the plaintiffs in #275 says he and his son have the same name, which reminds me of when Stefan Sharkansky’s pathetic (and now defunct) little blog, (u)SP, falsely claimed that a state liquor clerk made $128,000 in one year. My research of the online state employee directory revealed there were two Liquor Control Board employees with the same name, one a liquor store clerk, the other a warehouse worker, and they earned $28,000 and $32,000, respectively, for the year in question. Some lucrative job, huh. Republicans can’t get anything right.

Trump breaks another promise.
“President Donald Trump said that he is still deciding whether to move the Embassy of the United State in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, suggesting he is open to abandoning a controversial campaign promise.
“‘I’m thinking about it. I’m learning the issue and we’ll see what happens,’ Trump told the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom, Haaretz reported. ‘It’s not an easy decision. It’s been discussed for so many years. No one wants to make this decision, and I’m thinking about it seriously.'”
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Looking more like an Obama third term every day. Guess what, there are reasons for doing certain things a certain way and not doing them certain other ways. When clueless voters like Doctor Dumbfuck put an ignorant amateur in the White House because he promised to shake up the system, what you get is … the system. At least Cheeto Jesus is showing signs of having a nascent learning curve, which I guess is better than the alternative.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@278 At least he knows who his daddy is.

While y’all were sleeping, Trump HHS nominee Price was confirmed by the full Senate.
The confirmation of a Republican nominee by a Republican-controlled Senate is now great big news. (Did Pence have to break the tie again, or did an actual majority of senators vote for the nominee this time?)
Pile-driving the bar as low as you can, then tripping on it during the clear — that’s your miserable life from now on. Enjoy. (Do tell us again what a lock Gorsuch has on that Supreme Court seat.) Should confirmations ever end, humiliating apologias for corruption, fraud, and rank incompetence will be your next assignment. Toady up!
Live on your knees.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@274 Of course, they could have saved themselves a lot of trouble by doing it right in the first place …

it’s spiking the ball on the one yard line, getting stopped on 3rd down, then glancing off the upright to settle for the three.
Hey, a win is a win. But this performance makes the playoffs in 2018 look very iffy.

The Wisdom of PissCan spews:
Naggy faggy – like I said before, you might make some sense if any of what you said was true, but it’s completely wrong and therefor, like everything else in your life, makes no sense.
But you are one of the fake, fraud, phonies in the world.
LONG LIVE IRELAND.

Expect the GOP Senate to start an investigation of an ACTUAL felony about never.

Ekim spews:
The good news is that no matter how bad it gets for the USA, DRUMPH will make millions. Just like he did in Atlantic City.
How Donald Trump Bankrupted His Atlantic City Casinos, but Still Earned Millions
ATLANTIC CITY — The Trump Plaza Casino and Hotel is now closed, its windows clouded over by sea salt. Only a faint outline of the gold letters spelling out T-R-U-M-P remains visible on the exterior of what was once this city’s premier casino.
Not far away, the long-failing Trump Marina Hotel Casino was sold at a major loss five years ago and is now known as the Golden Nugget.
At the nearly deserted eastern end of the boardwalk, the Trump Taj Mahal, now under new ownership, is all that remains of the casino empire Donald J. Trump assembled here more than a quarter-century ago. Years of neglect show: The carpets are frayed and dust-coated chandeliers dangle above the few customers there to play the penny slot machines.
You have to hand it to those smart “billionaires.”
They sure have the expertise to ruin a country.

The best part about the claims of voter fraud — claims which both the reality-challenged (u)SP crowd and the supposedly sane Washington State Republican Party main line simply swallowed and regurgitated without question — was that felons had voted for Gregoire.
On election day 2004, Christine Gregoire was completing her fourth consecutive term as Washington State’s Attorney General. Claims that (male) felons had voted for a long-standing female prosecutor should never have been taken seriously by anyone, ever.
@godwinha spews:
This is ever more interesting.
It sounds like one of the (other) Ninth Circuit judges was sufficiently weirded out by the decision his colleagues reached that (s)he has filed a sua sponte request for re-hearing of the issue en banc.
The whole Ninth (20 or so?) is going to vote on whether to re-hear.
From what I understand this isn’t being appealed by DOJ. It’s being reviewed within the Ninth.
Some sense of reason within the Nutty Ninth. Who knew?

Got any, “You’re mom’s so fat…” jokes?
“What do you call a hilarious Republican? No one knows.”
“How many Republican’s does it take to screw in a lightbulb.? No one knows. There’s two of them over there screaming about how they’re job creators and they’re waiting for someone of lower class to get the ladder.”
“How many Republicans visit Cancun? None, they think it’s only for black people.”

It’s important to recall what an awful mess the original Executive Order was. There was just so much wrong packed into it, from bad policy to worse law, that the judges may have found yet even more and/or stronger reason(s) to reject it.
Politically Incorrect spews:
The Russians are dicks to their neighbors, and all the trouble they’ve had being invaded in the past by Swedish Vikings, Mongols, Napoleon, and others does not justify their behavior. They have no right to subjugate the peoples of Latvia, Estonia or Lithuania, much less Ukraine, Belarus, or even Poland. Yet the Russian attitude is pretty strange: there are old timers in Russia who still think Stalin was a great guy. Stalin is responsible for the starvation of millions in the 1930s and God knows how many people who simply disappeared into the gulag system for being perceived as not woshiping that crazy bastard. To top it all off, Stalin wasn’t even a Russian – he was a Georgian!
Talk about a bunch of idiots who like being miserable! The problem is Russia wants everyone to have the same shitty, short lives they have, and they want to be the World Leader in Shittyness.
KABOOOM!
Did you know the first czars of Russia were actually Swedish Vikings? The word “slav” is the root for “slave.” Kinda fits pretty well with their psyche, too. They’re slaves to their own fucked-up history.
