So proud of Seattle for divesting from Wells Fargo. If you do enough crap for long enough, you start to make enemies. For the foreseeable future banking is probably going to be ugly and harmful (it doesn’t have to be that way, but it does need to be regulated better). But at least the city can collectively stop spending its money on the worst of banks.

    People are going to need them to do city business at whichever bank replaces Wells Fargo. At least until Wells Fargo acquires it.

    It’s unclear whether the banks would be suitable candidates because the FDIC doesn’t indicate whether any of the assets are already tied up in collateral agreements or whether the banks meet additional city requirements.

    The deal-breaker for many of the smaller banks could be the city’s requirement for an adequate number of branches to serve the city’s 80 payment centers. City law doesn’t define what qualifies as an “adequate number of branches.”

    I’ve always marveled at attorneys with active cases before a court who simultaneously try their cases in the media. I just don’t see what the upside to that is. It can’t be persuasive to the court. And to the extent that the court has any sympathies its training and professionalism are unable to mitigate, it has every potential to turn those sympathies against your case.

    There are those who argue that The Hillbilly Jesus and his collaborators are playing this for the politics. That being turned back by the courts will enable him to push Executive authoritarianism even further, especially if there is any kind of terrorist attack. But attack or no, the Constitution abides, as does the rule of law. Lashing out from a position of weakness and failure will only serve to make them appear weaker over time.
    Remember, he promised them that they’d get sick of all the winning.

    Look on the bright side: there’s an excellent chance that Hillary Clinton will never be president of the US. I doubt someone with her intense image of high self-esteem will get out of politics (after all, politicians are good at preening in the media and are in love with themselves), but she will most likely never be president.

    I have deep Seattle familial roots. So if you want to make a point you could ask where Nordstrom stock was when I vested in the early 90s and how many times it has split since then. I’ll probably have a bit more of it when the previous generation shuffles off… We like to have holdings in select PNW companies in my family. It apparently creates jobs here.

    If memory serves the last time it split it was worth about $25. Now I have twice as many shares as then worth $44/share. And it still pays dividends every quarter.

    I know, this Wall Street stuff is complex.

    That’s one way of looking at it.

    To my knowledge I hold no PacNW stocks unless they are in a mutual fund holding. Except pretty small positions in Microsoft and in Intel, which I can’t come up with a good reason for holding. I think I sold naked puts and the stock price dropped and the shares were put to me, and I haven’t sold them yet.

    The way I look at it, my career was here, the former practice is here, and all of my real estate holdings are here. I’m already extraordinarily heavily invested in the PacNW.

    I was listening today to NPR and there was a short story on a hearing at the legislature or somewhere about strengthening Washington States background checks when someone attempts to purchase a gun. That the state needs to require that the State Patrol do something more than ignore being told someone who can’t buy a gun because of Protective Order (or other reason), and that the person being protected under a Protective Order be notified. A woman spoke that she is still scared of her ex after all these long years, and tried to remain hidden, and the state needs to protect her, and she should be notified if her ex attempts to buy a gun.
    I’m not sure she is any safer if this bad man (or woman) doesn’t have a gun. If they are a determined person they can use many other things to kill or injure her, some I would guess would be far more unpleasant that a gunshot. Or that she just prefers to being garroted,. stabbed, beaten, run over, poisoned, ect rather than being shot, probably this ex is totally ok to oblige her wishes.
    I do wonder about the ability of Washington state to protect her, and just what are her responsibilities to protect herself. I think she needs to take a page out of RR book, and she needs to purchase an appropriate pistol, learn how to use it appropriately to protect herself, and spend some time on the firing range. Perhaps expanding RR theories the state of Washington rather than issuing a Protective Order should purchase said gun, lessons, and time at the range for the woman (or man) in these dire circumstances.
    Perhaps she should join the US guard, or join the IDF. Hire a bodyguard.
    I do think these are serious issues, though the options the court has in dealing with the issues is to do noting or use very blunt laws depending on how the court weighs the evidence, statements ect. Some bad exs get off the hook though some not at all guilty exs get a PO of protection against them that can be draconian in its effects even if they never intend to speak to, see the person who is being protected as long as they live.

He saw the air traffic controllers as a union that he could work with. Most controllers were military veterans. Many of them were socially conservative. And he felt if any union could be brought into the Republican tent, maybe PATCO would be that union. So he and PATCO basically worked out a deal, and he promised that he would do what he could for the union in their negotiation when it came up in 1981. So it was a deep irony that PATCO did endorse Reagan in 1980. Reagan won. PATCO expected big returns from that endorsement. But when the negotiation actually unfolded in 1981, they were deeply disappointed. They decided to strike. But that was a bridge too far for Reagan. He was not going to tolerate a strike. And that’s what led to that terrible conflict.
