It’s always sad when a good person dies. Kayla Mueller was a good person. But her misplaced notions about helping others put many other good people’s lives in serious jeopardy. There are many families that could have suffered the same fate as her’s because they were trying to save her. She could have helped people here who need it. Many children in this country are abandoned and abused and need help. And now her death has become a propaganda tool for the war mongers. So, sadly, she ended up perpetuating the very suffering she sought to eliminate.

It’s long past time we start locking up crazy people for the good of society before they start to commit violence. There are far too many people out there who seem to be willing to spew any lie or any outrageous bullshit to draw attention to themselves and then react with violence and mayhem when people stop trying to pretend that their craziness is harmless and take steps to protect the people who are vulnerable to that violence. If it means rebuilding the mental health system into something comparable to the Prison system and enforcing basic standards of social conduct, so be it. Medicating such people and then releasing them back into society without close supervision just isn’t fucking working. Too many crazy people are making waves that shouldn’t be made, and there are enough crazies in the world to answer every action with equal or greater reaction.

Nobody has ever said that atheists can’t be lunatic assholes. It’s just that the crazies who identify themselves as religious are somehow always given a pass on their assholery when they match up with the rhetoric of their fellow tribesman. In this Country, that almost always means “christian”.
Hell, the Ku Klux Klan was almost always excused from being held responsible for their murders and bombings based on that alone. It wasn’t until the late 1950s that they started being held responsible for their actions and their cult stopped being considered a legitimate excuse.
That’s one of the main things the Conservatives consider to be their main civil right. A car bomb here, a midnight hanging there, the occasional burning of whole towns, all were perfectly acceptable actions in defense of their faith. They were christians after all.

It’s not like paying minimum wages ever drove anyone out of business, although I concede that some businesses would be even more profitable if labor was FREE. And some business owners are doing everything they can to work their employees off the clock and do everything else they can think of to dump their labor costs on someone else. Some bosses even want taxpayers to pay them to hire workers! As if they were running a nonprofit performing vital medical research or something like that.

At 4:18 in the interview Baumgartner says he wants a “robust discussion”. Let’s give it to him.
In the aforementioned KUOW Baumgartner interview, he talks about how wonderful it was that both he and his brother had paper routes.
Let’s talk a little bit about paper routes and minimum wage.
I didn’t grow up in WA, so I can’t say for sure that my experience with a paper route and how I got paid was the same as Baumgartner’s, but I suspect it was.
I delivered an evening newspaper M-Sat on my bicycle. The per paper price was $0.20 or $1.00 per week if you subscribed. Everybody subscribed. My price for the papers was $0.15. My gross revenue was $0.10 per week per subscriber + various and ever changing price bonuses. In the end my route netted me $0.05 per paper delivered.
The federal minimum wage in 1979 was $2.90/hr.
My rural route covered 5 miles. When the weather permitted me to ride my bike, I could complete it in about 70 minutes.
When weather did not permit it took my 2 hours.
I never earned the equivalent of minimum wage.
Now, let’s speed ahead to 2015. God forbid you have the ST delivered to your door, but who delivers papers now-a-days? Is it some teenager on a bicycle?
Or is it somebody older than 16 driving a vehicle?
If paying kids less than the minimum wage is a way to provide jobs to teens which is good for business, why did the ST and nearly every daily newspaper stop doing that and start paying more to people with cars and driver’s licenses?
