    What is Hannukah .. A Celebration of Freedom, Jewish Cinquo d’ Mayo, 14 July, 4th of July.

    Hannukah celebrates the MILITARY victory of the Jews, led by the priestly class, over the post-Alexander Greek satrap. The symbol of the candles reflects the joy of freedom from oppression … reflecting a “miracle” whereby the one day supply of oil found in the temple burned for 8 days.

    What Hannukah is NOT. … a religious holiday
    a winter festival
    a time of peace

    Why bother?

    It pisses me off when there are fights over whether to have Hannukiah (the candles) in a public place unless there is also a creche.

    Hannukah celebrates freedom form oppression, a very fit reason for a universal celebration .. just like 14 July or cinquo d’ Mayo. Everyone!!! should join us in ncelbrating the victory over the friggin Greeks … the Bushites of their day!

    HAPPY HANNUKAH to all! May the Macabees beat the hell out of all imperialists!

    A news item that should get the wingnuts out there all atwitter involves our nation’s largest military base in Latin America. The lease for that base, in Manta, Ecador, runs out in less than two years. Ecuador’s progressive president, Rafael Correa, has stated that we can renew the base “on one condition: that they let us put a base in Miami–an Ecuadorean base. If there is no problem having foreign soldiers on a country’s soil, surely they’ll let us have an Ecuadorean base in the United States.” The base is used to combat our little “war on drugs.” There is a logic and equity to Correa’s proposal that even wingnuts should grasp, shouldn’t they?

    That is unacceptable & anti-Semitic, in my own personal opinion, don’t care who proposed it. Light one less candle, and the observant Jewish people sure aren’t leaving that tiny candle to burn till the house burns down. Probably wiser to ask ALL people to eliminate the lights on their Christmas trees in order to save Global Warming. Most likely that there are a hell of a LOT more Christmas Trees than Menoras on this planet, not to mention the resulting house fires from burning Christmas trees!

    Instead, why not ask some of the fat asses to get out of their over tanked SUVs for a day? Walk that 2 blocks to the store. Huh?

    I think all this over-hyped, over-hysteria, over Global Warming (hey, I’m not saying it’s not a PROBLEM and needs to be addressed) – I think it’s a convenient DISTRACTION! Like in yesterday’s PI:

    While the town was floating away, and the basements are flooding by the hundreds, Northgate apartment folks becoming ‘Boat People’ to escape their flooded abodes. Bush is chomping to create World War III… the City Council is focusing instead on Global Warming.

    Isn’t it simply just so much easier?

    Let The Hamsters Eat Their Soggy Cake/plasterboard and EVERYONE can focus INSTEAD on (OMG!!!!) Global Warming.

    The first set of Swift Kids videos were very funny. Does Randomly-typed-characters understand that it’s a joke? If not, does it speak more to the decay of political debate in the US or to the level swiftness of the righty trolls who sail within HA?

    Oh, yeah. Have any of you wondered why Iran is seeking nuclear power reactors when they have a lot of oil. Allow me to explain. They’re not stupid.

    They have been planning this since the 1970s. The Shah wanted to do it as well. Cheney, Rumsfeld, and the Ford administration helped sell them equipment, and we thought it was a capital idea.

    You see, they have a lot of oil, and they are a poor-ish country (and accordingly not much of a military threat to anyone). In order to make the most money for their country by selling their oil, they want to use less of it for domestic consumption. And that’s it.

    It’s a good plan. And since we now know (at least, everyone but our president and Mike Huckabee) that they’re NOT involved in any way in creating nuclear weapons, I’m sure you’l all support their wish to sell us more of their oil.
