Open Thread 12/16

by Carl Ballard — Monday, 12/16/13, 8:01 am

– Seattle Bike Blog Magazine looks pretty nice.

– Someone tell Megyn Kelly about the first rule of holes.

– Broken saddles and saddle maintenance

– Oregon deserves WAY better than what Cover Oregon has done (or hasn’t done)

– In the last open thread, I linked to a playful list of suggestions about what was blocking Bertha. Here’s a more serious thing.

A federal judge has ruled that NSA snooping on telephone calls is “likely unconstitutional.”

@1….and the rightie trolls (including a certain erstwhile “bagpipe operator”) are hollering bloody murder about it. Because, yanno, it’s all the fault of the socialist spawn of Satan from Kenya (or was it Indonesia…or…someplace?)

    With something like this:

What’s different? Well the usual right wing suspects won’t tell you this:

The rules were signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2007. They are designed to address gross inefficiencies with old light bulbs — only 10% of the energy they use is converted into light, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, which has a handy fact sheet about the changes. The rest is wasted as heat.

What I don’t understand is why the weasel words. The judge may or may not be overturned by a higher court, but this is supposed to be his legal ruling, so why is he using words such as “appears” and “likely”.

So CBS, not content to have pissed away their credibility with the “Benghaaaaaazi!” story, put the former FBI PR mouthpiece and occasional “reporter” on air last night to assure us that the NSA is doing nothing wrong.

O.K. I’m totally fine with it now.

Any chance the NSA has a book about to be released by CBS’ publishing arm?

Some of the NSA story is plausible, mainly because if you’re some ordinary shmuck or schmuckette, nobody really does give a rip about what you’re saying on the phone, unless you’re making a lot of calls to some place that most Americans don’t…like, for instance, a pay phone in Kandahar or Islamabad. The intelligence community could spend outlandish amounts of money collecting every email and phone conversation, but what for? Nothing’s really important unless some human examines it and decides it is, so if you’re looking for a needle in a haystack it’s pretty dumb to duplicate the haystack.

In fact, what the federales are probably paying the most attention to is calls to numbers, emails to addresses, and browsers accessing web pages that the government itself put out there as decoys. That, in a way, is far more insidious than a huge army of analysts listening in on everything–and it’s also what last night’s report didn’t say much about.

How Boeing Plans To Spend The $8.7 Billion We Gave Them

“The Boeing Co. says its board of directors approved a $10 billion increase in its stock buyback program. The aircraft maker is also raising its quarterly dividend payment by about 50 percent.

“Chairman and CEO Jim McNerney says the moves reflect its operational performance, increasing cash flow and confidence in the future.”

Disclosure: Roger Rabbit owns Boeing stock and will profit from this largesse. Why not? If I don’t take it, someone else will!

In the wake of the Spuyten Duyvil train derailment, some attention has been given to the Positive Train Control mandate. Especially speculating on whether if installed, could it have prevented the derailment. As for SOUNDER, Sound Transit has awarded the contract to install the equipment in it’s locomotives and cab cars.

So FartyArt, with your DUMMOCRETIN leaders doing the same thing and Jay Carneybarker saying as much at the Outhouse Presser, it seems treasonous acts are viewed equally by Republicans and DUMMOCRETINS.

So why are you so patently blind to that?

    Hatred perhaps?

Too much HA DUMMOCRETIN Kook Aid?

@9 Further disclosure: Boeing’s move will also increase the value of its own executives’ shares and options. It also takes some special kind of chutzpah for a company to spend a pile of money doing this while simultaneously telling its workers it can’t fund their pensions and demanding massive government handouts.

Wow another Obummercare poll. The libtard DUMMOCRETIN press is looking for anything to make Obummercare better. Except…

    55% still think Obummer sucks!

55% think Obummercare website failure portents bigger problems with Obummercare in general

60% want Obummer to delay the individual mandate

62% think Obummer told a whopper story on Obummercare .period. .guaranteed.
62% think the Obumercare web site still sucks…

Wow even Mahattan DUMMOCRETINS are feeling the sting…

It is not lost on many of the professionals that they are exactly the sort of people — liberal, concerned with social justice — who supported the Obama health plan in the first place. Ms. Meinwald, the lawyer, said she was a lifelong Democrat who still supported better health care for all, but had she known what was in store for her, she would have voted for Mitt Romney.

    And this is great too…

“We are the Obama people,” said Camille Sweeney, a New York writer and member of the Authors Guild. Her insurance is being canceled, and she is dismayed that neither her pediatrician nor her general practitioner appears to be on the exchange plans. What to do has become a hot topic on Facebook and at dinner parties frequented by her fellow writers and artists.

Two bleeding-heart libtard DUMMOCRETINS mugged by Obummercare reality. The anguish these elite Obummercare DUMMOCRETIN jockstrappers are going through is no different than those 6+ million real world victims of Obummercare with mandated insurance cancelations! They are “enjoying” the added financial burden, sleepless nights, stress, and the loss of familiar doctors and hospitals the common folk in “flyover land” started experiecing back in October when HA DUMMOCRETINS were trumpeting the Tea Party shutdown over Obummercare.

    DAYUM!

    @16 “Liberalism is a computer-borne mental disease”

No, it isn’t, and when you and your ilk spew this kind of shit, you’re condemning —

    Child labor laws
    Workplace injury compensation
    Regulation of predatory business practices
    Free universal public education
    Feeding the unemployed and hungry
    Treating the ill and injured
    Preventing pollution
    The 8-hour workday
Presumption of innocence and due process of law
    Peace

This list goes on and on, and is almost endless, and I have only three words to say to people like you who oppose liberal goals and values:

    GO FUCK YOURSELF

We liberals are going to make this world better, and if you don’t want to participate in that, we’ll do it without you.
