    They had water poured over their faces, while restrained, head down at a 15° angle and the water was poured into their noses. They were forced to stand with an aluminium pole up their anus, and hit with electric shots through their hand and genitals. They were hanged head down, by their ankles and beaten on the bottoms of their feet.

    Many were people whose only “crime” was being denounced by their neighbors for the reward money or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Many of those tortured were the CIA’s own informants and contacts. Children as young as 7 were tortured in front of their parents. Hundreds died after being packed into locked up shipping containers and left in the sun for days at a time.

    They were tortured by Americans and people working under the direct supervision of American military and intelligence officials.

    Who are the Nazis now?

    Or are you one of those people who take pride in that sort of thing?

    When a private business receives a $500,000,000 tax break (described by one analyst as the largest he’s ever seen) – $500,000,000 that could have been to stave off cuts in education, transportation and social services – that business has entered into a ‘public-private partnership.’ As partners in the enterprise, we the public have the right to know…and the business has the obligation to support through disclosure and transparency…whether the deal made is delivering the benefits promised.

    I’m rather proud of Don Benton (and Representative Ann Rivers) for voting against funding the Columbia River Crossing I-5 Replacement Bridge, another sign of engineering incompetence and corruption at Wsdot.

    ODOT finished its fine design work in 2010, but was rejected by CRC Commission leader Wsdot. A year later, 2011, the first bridge was released to the public but didn’t last a month of peer review before its rejection as structurally unsound. Wsdot then proposed trimming the project scope by deferring the Marine Drive Interchange replacement in Oregon. Of the 7 interchanges proposed to be rebuilt, Marine Drive is by far ‘most in need’ of replacement. Wsdot kept all Washington State interchanges and the horrible Concept ‘D’ interchange design (spagetti ramps) for Hayden Island Oregon. Wsdot rejected the 2010 ODOT Concept#1 Off-island Access alternative though it is least impact and the only safe entrance option.

    The two or three bridge designs that followed were also considered structurally unsound. In 2013, the Coast Guard also rejected these ‘double-deck’ designs for their insufficient river clearance. Single-deck bridge designs (pre-2008) are NOW being reconsidered. A 3-lane transit bridge ‘attached’ to the new southbound span (on the same level, downriver) forms an emergency access corridor and reduces recommended lane width from 6-lanes to 5-lanes. Why put the transit and ped/bike lanes below where they unecessarily complicate bridge structure, reduce river clearance and create a drum-like noise amplifier that pedestrians will disdain?

    Answer: Conservative Wsdot fucking assholes disapproved electing an American of African descent as President and decided to build a highway to hell under Seattle, a catrastrophic failure once completed to raise their God of Vengence.

    What’s missing is a better story about how the economy should work.

    The story starts with the problem: a different inequality.

    We’ve given corporations 30-40 years of tax cuts and privatization. Where are the jobs? Where are the benefits? Shouldn’t we be drowning in jobs and prosperity?

    All this “trickle-down” economic nonsense has done has been to make the rich richer and the rest of the country poorer.

    4. It’s not a perfect world. Some things, as you say, are messy and hard. Sometimes decisions are made with adverse consequences, like trying to save a hostage and getting 13 people killed in the process, or trying to save a bunch of them and having choppers go down in the desert, killing a bunch of our guys. Then there are the decisions made because the consequences might be messy and hard, like declining to a missile strike on OBL when you have the chance and later trying to hide evidence in your pants. If a president makes a decision on behalf of the country’s national security that is best never shown the light of day, I’m OK with that – no matter who is in office. Drone strikes authorized by our current president? Absolutely, if they’re likely to be effective, even if some outcomes are messy and hard. Historically we’ve conducted warfare with a friendly fire incident rate of around 10%, and we treat our combatants with respect, that one conflict excepted. We assume emeritus status and then write books lauding them as our greatest generation, while gigging on MSNBC.
