They build the subway cars to last. A few get a second career on Staten Island. Being used for artificial reefs is much better, than just recycling them. The MTA may also have caught up with the disinvestment of the Robert Moses era, which culminated in the crisis of the 1980’s where at one point, worn out subway cars were failing at the rate of 100 a day.
