by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 10/24/12, 8:01 am

– There ain’t enough fuck you in the world for this guy.

– Nepotism on full view on TV.

– At what point do the R-71 people give up their court case to keep their signatures hidden?

– It is ridiculous — RIDICULOUS — that we live in a society where it’s a good guess that a shooting in a place often frequented by women is going to be an extension of a “domestic dispute.”

– Family values.

– Bikers and walkers spend more money than drivers over time.

– Anyone interested in seeing a MST3King of BIRDEMIC tomorrow?

I have to wonder, whether after:

    Akin
    Mourdock

and the lost opportunities the GOP has or will have had because of them,

will the GOP try harder to interfere with the Tea Party in the future?

MO and IN Senate races still seem to be close. If the GOP loses them both and the Dems hold the Senate because of it, the Tea Party really would be to blame.

Here’s an open letter to Ann Coulter, from John Franklin Stephens, a Special Olympics ‘Global Messenger’…excerpted here, read the whole thing.

I thought first of asking whether you meant to describe the President as someone who was bullied as a child by people like you, but rose above it to find a way to succeed in life as many of my fellow Special Olympians have.

Then I wondered if you meant to describe him as someone who has to struggle to be thoughtful about everything he says, as everyone else races from one snarkey sound bite to the next.

Finally, I wondered if you meant to degrade him as someone who is likely to receive bad health care, live in low grade housing with very little income and still manages to see life as a wonderful gift.

Typical liberals, whining because free money wasn’t give to them.

Oh, and they’re in decline. Boo frickin’ hoo.

Although the Obama campaign raised a record amount of money online, they never quite made common cause with online activists.

“It has been a very testy relationship,” said Peter Daou, a blogger in the early days of the movement and now a political consultant. “He didn’t reach out. That was complained about in 2008, and during his presidency there has been a very bad relationship. They have been dismissive, and you want to look for a reason why the progressive blogosphere has fractured, that is it.”

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/a.....vival.html

Note the irony of a liberal publication in decline and struggling for survival, writing about liberal bloggers in decline and struggling for survival.

    So…

Yesterday Fox News was trumpeting Donald Trump’s Big Announcement (I noticed he didn’t say “huge”) which he claimed could change the Presidential contest. Serial picked right up on it, hypothesizing about how some dirty divorce paperwork would have all sorts of nasty things to say about Obama – even if it were never filed.

Turns out that guess wasn’t even close. But Fox News (and Serial) ran with it anyway. All Trump had to announce was his rather sad attempt to regain relevence, by offering to make a donation in return for copies of documents (The President’s college transcripts and passport application) which he would immediately disclaim as false, and therefore refuse to pay as promised.

The motives seem to be rather petty and predictable. Fox News got the media and bloggers to temporarily stop talking about Romney’s disasterous performance at the last debate. And Trump diverted attention (somewhat) from the story which hit the papers today – the board of the luxory condos at Trump Place tole the Trump organization “You’re fired!” as managers of the building, due to repeated complaints about poor service with no improvement.

More on Romney’s plan to build up our Navy:

Here is a quick-and-easy graph showing the number of aircraft carriers in existence around the world:

    World’s Aircraft Carriers – 2012

(Note: some of the foreign carriers, such as the recently launched foreign carriers, don’t have ooperational aircraft wings and are a long way from having fixed-wing aircraft suitable for carrier operations).

And here is what happens when a battleship, regardless of size, goes against carrier-operated aircraft:

    Yamato Battleship

(Short story: the Yamato was the biggest battleship of WWII, with 18″ main guns and impressive armored anti-torpedo belts. But it never had a chance to fire it’s big guns in combat – it was damaged by a torpedo, then by carrier-based airplanes, and in it’s final (suicide) mission to attack the U.S. Navy at Okinawa, it was sunk far from it’s goal by U.S. carrier aircraft.)

It’s unclear as to what Romney is proposing. More aircraft carriers and accompanying battle groups? It seems we have more than enough to meet our needs in any perceivable conflict. More battleships? The Japanese did us a favor in sinking our battleships at Pearl Harbor – most of the old Battleship admirals ended up in shore jobs while the carrier sailors won the war. Even impressive battleships which came on line late in the war (Missouri and Iowa) ended up being floating anti-aircraft batteries and ship-to-shore artillary. If he has something else in mind, he’s not saying what that is.

If that’s the “undecideds” Romney is counting on, then he’s already lost. People like her should be a reliable base for him, one he doesn’t have to exert any effort to win over. Instead, quite a few like what he says (now), but just don’t feel they can trust him.

    # 49: What we need to work on is expanding our Democratic “base” before the next elections in 2014. Because with the nature of the Republicans running for office this time around, we should be doing much better at this time. If the Republicans ever cut their strings from the Tea Party and field some really electable candidates, it would be a battle.

The problem so far, however, is that the “low-information voter” has been replaced by something even worse – the “low-educated voter”. This is a victory for Republican efforts to de-fund education and put it back into the hands of home-schoolers who teach only Republican-approved philosophy (have you seen the available curriculum?) and private schools (either church-based or elite acadamies). Those kids are being taught not to listen to any teachings beyond what they have already been programmed to believe, and to limit their sources of information to reliably Republican outlets – such as Fox News, A.M. Talk Radio, etc.

Heck, a lot of evangelical churches even preach to “shield your mind” from negative influences, and then go on to disparage the “mainstream media” (which they interpreet as anyone other than Fox News, Murdoch publications, or A.M. Radio).

So, how do we get people – especially young people – to open their minds, think critically, and be very suspicious whenever anyone tells them to listen only to certain sources of information? I think if we can win that battle, the Republican talking-points will disentegrate.

Plus, when it happens on the left the people who do it tend to be gone from campaigns rather quickly while on the right they tend to hang around until they have to leave.

How many times are Republicans going to keep stating the easily disprovable lie – that they will create more jobs (in this country)? While we are at it, how many times are they going to continue to try to blame Democrats for federal deficits? Both are easily disprovable by the actual results in the economy – and the federal finances – over the past thirty years

The Righties keep telling us that abortion and women’s health issues aren’t the issue in this election, that that’s not what people are focused on, so it must be true, right?

Most Americans believe that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare.” And a stunning Gallup Poll taken earlier this month in 12 swing states found that 39% of women who are registered voters said that abortion was the most important issue for women in this election.

So why aren’t I a Republican? Because I learned to read and think critically, and develop a common-sense ability to perceive deception. Besides, signing a petition is the same for an initiative measure as casting a ballot in a primary for a candidate, as it is the only way to get candidate/measure to the “real” election, the general election. Initiatives are different from traditional petitions from which the idea comes from, because the petitions are legally binding in that the initiative goes on the ballot if enough signatures are reached.

What would you do if you were Team Romney and had $169,000,000 to spend over a three-week period?

Why, you might buy a half-hour of prime time just before the election in the battleground states, to tell people exactly what you will do, and why Obama hasn’t gotten the job done.

Romney thinking of running 30-minute “closing argument” ad in battleground states?

So, let’s say Obama is re-elected, and we continue to muddle on and the economy really doesn’t get much better. We have four more years of trillion dollar deficits.

That would be a total increase in federal deficit from $16T to $20T.

By Lib Sci’s logic, that’s actually an Obama success, because the increase would be only 25%.

And a 25% increase in the total federal deficit is an improvement over the 30% increase under Obama that Lib Sci refers to in @ 112.

Would four more years of trillion-dollar deficits be a sign of Obama success, Lib Sci?

I am, of course, not surprised about Dr. Robert’s manifest dishonesty about budget deficits, and using superficialities to try to imagine that he is scoring cheap points.

Fact: Aggregate debt in both absolute and relative terms has increased much more under Republicans than Democrats for 40 years.

Fact: Prior to George W Bush, the US ran three years of increasing surpluses. Bush’s first year the surplus shrank and has not been seen since.

Fact: The vast majority of the present deficit is directly attributable to Bush tax cuts, Bush wars and Bush depression, or, if your prefer, Republican disasters.

Fact: Under Obama the deficit has been shrinking each year, despite manifest insanity in the Republican controlled House, and a Republican party determined to injure the country in order to take back power.

Bob, we all know this. Your posturing is really rather transparent. You grew tiresome long ago, and I cannot wait for Nov 7 and your unceremonious disappearance from these threads.

WASHINGTON — Former secretary of state Colin Powell endorsed President Obama for reelection Thursday, saying he has been “very solid” on protecting the country during his watch.

Speaking on CBS’ “This Morning,” Powell credited Obama with ending the war in Iraq, drawing down troops in Afghanistan and avoiding entanglement in new wars despite tensions around the globe.

“I think that the actions he’s taken with respect to protecting us from terrorism have been very, very solid,” Powell said. “And so I think we ought to keep on the track that we are on.”

There was Reyes, who ran the House Intel Committee.

In a December 2006 interview with Congressional Quarterly, Reyes said that al-Qaeda, an exclusively Sunni group, was composed of “both” Sunni and Shi’te members. He then instead asserted al-Qaeda is “predominantly probably Shi’ite.” He also avoided answering the question whether Hezbollah, a Shi’ite organization, was Sunni or Shi’ite.[6]

This probably isn’t a good sign for Mitt.

Romney’s shift on foreign policy creates confusion

Romney’s most serious foreign policy problem however, revealed itself in the foreign policy debate. He repudiated in one night the strong criticisms he had made of Obama over the past year on Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Russia. In trying to be all things to all people, he resurfaced doubts about the most important qualities we need in our presidents — the core beliefs and consistency of values that are the best predictors of how he would lead in a crisis. This may explain his erratic and excessively partisan reaction to the Benghazi attacks and his puzzling shifts in how to handle the Iran nuclear threat.
