I am glad that King County is down to an r of 0.5. As frustrating as the last year has been, that’s definitely a great sign. I am glad that the Puget Sound region is doing well enough to get into the phase 2, but I worry an early reopening is going to reverse some of those gains.
Anyway, wash your hands right now.

I think we’re beginning to see the limitations of democracy and what happens when dumbshits can vote.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
4,
I don’t think so.
I think all of us are being constantly sold on a partial lie. That the only way democratic government can accomplish anything of use is through bipartisanship. But for more than three decades, with remarkable consistency, surveys have shown that more than twice as many democratic voters are supportive of their elected representatives working across the aisle. And Republicans have consistently used this to their advantage, but also to America’s disadvantage.
Specifically they’ve used that willingness of Democrats to move rightward in order to “get things done” as a way of gaining structural advantages in future elections and future public debates. And they’ve done this by driving up partisanship, divisive rhetoric, and extremism on the right. Democrats have been consistently trading away future opportunity in exchange for small short term gains for decades. And it has to stop. Only when it stops will we see this rising tide of partisanship and division begin to subside. Because Republicans have been driving it. And every single concession they get they use to drive it further.
Consider the appallingly one-sided debate about “unity”.
“Conservative” Republican base Trump supporters, driven by lies promoted by the party leadership, and extremely violent rhetoric, and encouraged and supported by every single major prominent Republican, attacked the Capitol and sought to assassinate the Vice President and House and Senate members. The President obstructed the efforts to respond to the attack, even going so far as to ignore the pleas of his own party members in Congress.
And in the ensuing aftermath amidst calls for “unity” championed by the new Democratic President, Republicans offer absolutely nothing by way of response to what they did.
Nothing other than demands that we forget about it, move on, and pretend it didn’t really happen. And most importantly demands that we pretend they didn’t do it.
They did. They created and spread the lies. They created and promoted the threats, the violent rhetoric, and the public demands for the attacks. They called on their followers to do it.
And they have absolutely no intention of owning up to that. And they demand that we all just ignore it and forget about it.
Concessions to those demands, “for the sake of national unity” will
guarantee that it happens again. America simply can’t afford that. But if we let that happen, if we make concessions to the idiotic pretense that Republicans at every level are engaged in attacking democracy, then that will not be a failure of democracy. It will be a failure of Democrats.

…I worry an early reopening is going to reverse some of those gains.
You’re correct to worry, Carl. King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties are permitted to open even though 84% of the ICU beds in these counties are occupied.
Combine this with the fact that the new case rates in this region of WA is increasing. New cases mean more hospitalizations.
I’m rather surprised that having only 11% of ICU beds available for the next wave or mutation is considered a positive indicator.
Under the Inslee plan, COVID-19 deaths are a good thing because they make ICU beds available for the next infected patient.
If one agrees that lockdowns are necessary in some situations, wouldn’t 84% ICU bed occupancy with an increasing COVID-19 infection rate be considered one of them?
This seems silly. This seems contrary to science.

Roger Rabbit spews:
@10 I will be happy to explain to The Biggest Fucking Moron Of All that countless people, no doubt yourself included, use English words in vernacular ways the don’t precisely conform to their dictionary or legal definitions, as a form of shorthand or abbreviation; for example, instead of saying “impeach in the House” and “convict in the Senate,” it’s easier to simply say “impeach” to refer to the entire process, especially on contexts where it’s not necessary to break the technical process down into its constituent components to facilitate the listener’s understanding.
This must be differentiated from, say, a Republican spelling “too” as “to,” or vice versa, etc. The former arises from a desire for efficiency, clarity, and brevity in writing and speaking; the latter from stupidity, ignorance, and lack of education.
Now, it will be understood that some listeners are so deficient of understanding that every goddamned thing has to be spelled out for them. But not everyone has time to do that. And some listeners aren’t worth the effort in any case.

@23 Buggy whip jobs shouldn’t come back, because the world has moved on from horse-and-buggy transportation technology.
The world also is moving on from coal-derived energy production technology, and needs to, for human survival.
I’m sorry about the coal mining jobs. AT&T doesn’t employ hundreds of thousands of telephone operators anymore. Legions of typists have been displaced from offices by computers and word processing software. Soon, automated driving technology may send truck drivers the way of coal miners.
C’est la vie. Shrug. Happens to all of us, sooner or later. E.g., computers are faster, more accurate, and less expensive than radiologists, and don’t have quirky personalities of their human counterparts.

I tweaked the commenting policy on Steve’s blog today to make the blog more useful to its many readers.
