I had to get up early on Wednesday, and I’m still messed up today. Really feeling the lack of sleep, even an hour or so, is kind of an adult thing. I’m sure when I was a teenager and didn’t get home until super late, I’m sure it screwed me up just as bad. But I think I just pushed past it. I’m actually feeling it now. A couple days later.
Dr. Orpheus spews:
Here’s an idea on how to derail the next Tim Eyman bullshit taxes initiative. Why not compete with him for money and signature attention? We know for a fact that a 2/3 requirement for tax increases is unconstitutional, so let’s file five (or more) different initiatives with varying spins on a 2/3 (or 7/8, 3/4, etc.) requirement. We can fundraise for them all, thereby competing with and reducing Timmy’s income source. We can gather signatures for them all, with the aim of diluting his own effort. Hopefully the undiscerning voter (probably the majority of people who sign the petitions and vote for his initiatives in the first place) will respond to Timmy’s signature-gatherers with, “No, I’ve already signed this one.” And it would be too complicated to explain why Timmy’s should *also* be signed. The more of ours that make it onto the ballot, the more confusing it will become! If one (or more) of ours should pass, we can fail to defend it well when the inevitable (correct) court challenge appears.

Roger Rabbit spews:
@1 Nice idea, but the problem is these people sign everything, including the same initiative multiple times. Have you checked what the duplication rate is for Timmeh’s initiatives? Does he have to collect a million sigs to get 200,000 valid ones?

Mark Adams spews:
Sometime last week I heard an interview of Hillary Clinton where she was questioned about the e-mails. Perhaps the reporter suffered from a lack of sleep or just doesn’t know shit about classification. The US government has publications on the subject. There is also information out on the internet, and just read a couple of Tom Clancy novels. Still the reporter nor any reporter has asked Hillary the two or three important questions. One: As Secretary of State were you the classification authority for the State Department. 2. As such could you have received information via e-mail before you deemed it should be classified. (Occasssionally a sotry appears in some magazine or university and then the research just disappears). 3. When you were Secretary how did you determine if information should be classified and at what level. Whether prepped or not these are questions she should be prepared to answer. As they will come up in the general election perhaps even at a debate.
Mark Adams spews:
@1 The problem with your suggestion is I generally sign any initiative that I get an opportunity to sign. Local or State. I do so in the belief that I get to vote against the measure if it makes it to the ballot. I have voted for some of Eyemen’s measures and against others. The more initiatives the merrier still it can be a pain in the butt when it comes time to vote as there can be initiatives that are on opposing sides of an issue and the voters can and have passed both or nearly passed both. Perhaps some initiative should require a supermajority such as 60 percent or two thirds. Do constitutional changes require a super majority or are they just a majority. Requiring 60 or 2/3 particularly on an issue that would force the legislature to pass tax hikes by supermajority would at least be ironic, and if it’s such a good idea the good people of Washington would have no problem voting for such a good idea. (Or would they?)
Mark Adams spews:
@5 It’s no where near that high, but most initiative sponsor shoot for about 1.3 to 1.5 signatures to have enough real voter signatures. If you need 1 million then they shoot for 1.3 to 1.5 million and hopefully they have enough time to verify the million they need and can go out for more if they need too. If your not on a budget you just keep getting signatures until you need to round up everything and turn it in to the Secretary of State or the appropriate county auditor or city rep.
Mark Adams spews:
@7 Bill Gates is wrong unless the legislature is going to change the constitution of Washington or Bill is writing the check.
Mark Adams spews:
@9 Well unlike you they don’t sleep in or perhaps don’t sleep at all. Wonder how many billions they have lost due to the plunge in oil. What no sympathy for the Koch’s? Well good.
Mark Adams spews:
@10 Of course if there is racism in that part of the country it’s more likely to be directed at Native Americans than any other group. Throw in the land issues between Native American’s and cattle men or even sheep ranchers you got volatile possibilities.
Fortunately the tribe isn’t likely to send in their young warriors to do the governments job. So where is Forge as this is a job for a superhero.
Mark Adams spews:
@13 Well some truth in that and I don’t know of anyone who has been in a position of classification authority to have been prosecuted. Many if not most have done some questionable things. It’s of course ironic that Mr. Gates would mention station chiefs as often the Secretary of States department might be the most upset with whatever his station chief is planning to do, and are most likely to be kept in the dark. Although the Station Chief works in the embassy his or her boss isn’t the Ambassador, yet they have to work together with that whole need to know thing being constantly batted back and forth.
Still the Soviets were right when they said all Ambassadors are spies as they are.
Mark Adams spews:
@18 The Russian veterans of the great war need love too. Especially the ones who ended up in Siberia after the war for many years in education programs before they returned home.
Mark Adams spews:
@16 That reminds me about the recent spate of the possibility that the Supreme Court could take this up. I think the court would punt and pass the issue of as one of politics that the electoral college is best able to deal with and most likely dealt with before the issue came before the court. If a candidate gets a majority then according to the electoral college the candidate meets the requirements of the US Constitution. Any other decision would mean a constitutional crises that the court would try to avoid. Of course there would be that constitutional issue of the electors being required to vote a certain way by state law, rather than be free to vote for any candidate or anyone for President and Vice President.
Mark Adams spews:
@23 Hey when you are the classification authority for the State Department you can set up the rules as you want them Puddy. If you want to use a transparent tent or transparent pillows that is ok. If you want to insist everything be done on typewriters and the typewriter ribbons be collected and put in a safe and or burned every day you can do that too. Or you could insist on everything being handwritten with quills, sometimes the old ways are the best ways and most secure.
Mark Adams spews:
@25 Political appointees of both parties often do things with classified material with no punishment or a slap on the hand that if an employee of the US government did the same thing they go to jail and both have signed the same paperwork on guarding the material.
The real challenge is when it’s the President and Vice President who reveals classified material. Every President has done just that at some point in their time in office. Maybe with the exceptions of Truman and Eisenhower. Ronal Reagan did it in some big ways and multiple times. Though he managed to forget the bit about the Contras, Iran weapon thing.
Mark Adams spews:
@26 While the report makes a lot of good points the thing is if Bernie wins the first two states and does well during Super Tuesday he will have momentum which has been much more of a key in the nomination process. If a candidate walks into the convention with a majority of delegates not including superdelagates and the party goes with the opposing candidate that candidate has a legtimatcy problem and it’s the very situation that you get a party split and both end up running for President.
Right now Bernie is improving as a candidate and his star is rising. Hillary star is static or even drooping a bit. It’s still a race that is about her not loosing as about Bernie willing. Bernie can win the first two primaries and she can still be inevitable, but Bernie does well or better than expected super Tuesday she will be hitting the panic button, at best her finger maybe showing a slight twitch toward the button. So far though she is showing strength and confidence which is what she must do as a candidate. If Bernie played sports in high school way back when that might be his true advantage in the next few months.
