I wonder how many protesters Iran’s dictators are quietly rounding up and dragging in front of firing squads?
That’s what no small number of wingnuts wanted to do to anyone who protested Bush’s blockheaded policies of invading the wrong country, torturing innocent people, debasing our currency, sending American jobs to countries that hate us, handing Wall Street the keys to the Social Security Trust Fund, and so on.

So how did a young Mahmoud Ahmadinejad grow up to be such a big asshole?
During the Iraq-Iran war, the Revolutionary Guards sent unarmed teenaged “Basij” volunteers ahead of them in minefields, to blow up the mines so the RG soldiers could get through. I’ve read that Ahmadinejad was one of these minefield walkers who somehow survived the war. An experience like that at a young age would turn anyone into a hardass.
According to Wikipedia, Ahmadinejad was a principal captor and interrogator of American hostages during the 1979 embassy takeover. Several former U.S. hostages remember him acting in a supervisory role over the other interrogators. So, even back then, he held a leadership position in Iran’s state security apparatus. Apparently he rose quickly after his minefield forays.
This is a guy who witnessed the unspeakable horrors of the Iraq-Iran war, who is thoroughly hardened to death, and we may surmise, is determined that Iran’s armed forces will never suffer casualties like that again. Hence his fixation on getting the A-bomb. With the bomb there will never again be any need for minefield walkers. He is on a mission from Allah to spare future generations of his countrymen from what he himself experienced.
And he doesn’t believe in democracy. Like the Blues Brothers, he believes he’s on a “mission for God,” and he won’t be stopped by the votes of the Iranian people or anything else.
Except an assasin’s bullet. Or a well-placed Israeli airstrike.
I’m quite sure the Israelis understand this. Maybe some Iranian reformers understand it, too.

First of all, the president only promised not to raise income taxes on individuals making less than $250,000. S-Chip is an excise tax on consumption of a socially undesirable product, not a general tax on incomes, and cap-and-trade is a “tax” only on giant corporations; individual taxpayers won’t pay it.* (I’ll explain below why I put quote marks around it.)
There are valid and good reasons for these taxes. First of all, their primary purpose is behavior modification, not raising revenue.
There’s an old saying that your freedom to swing your fist stops where my nose starts. The rest of us are tired of paying smokers’ medical bills. If 65 bucks a carton doesn’t get them to kick the habit then at least the gummint can use the revenue to pay their Medicaid bills. I had a neighbor who ran up over $150,000 in Medicare costs while in his death throes from his lifelong smoking habit. (I know what it cost because he told me.) And that’s not even mentioning the second-hand smoke the rest of us have to breathe. If you’re still smoking after S-Chip and $6.50 a pack, that’s you’re fucking problem. Quit.
Much the same analysis applies to cap-and-trade. For the first two centuries of the Industrial Revolution, capitalists poured shit into our air for free, and the rest of us paid for the corrosion to our auto paint, house siding, and lungs. It seems you’re too stupid to understand that cap-and-trade is a permit system, not a tax. It’s a market-based system of regulating air pollution that sets a total limit on pollutants and lets the free market decide who gets to put those pollutants in the air. That’s why you righties want, isn’t it, to let the free market do things? Well, that’s what this is, and you’re trashing it. Okay, if you don’t like cap-and-trade, we’ll go to Plan B, which is direct regulation. Do you like that better?

If you were thinking the Rev. Jeremiah Wright had been tempered by a national backlash that nearly derailed Barack Obama’s trip to the White House, guess again.
In an exclusive interview at the 95th annual Hampton University Ministers’ Conference, Wright told the Daily Press that he has not spoken to his former church member since Obama became president, and he implied that the White House won’t allow Obama to talk to him.

Wright also said Obama should have sent a U.S. delegation to the World Conference on Racism held recently in Geneva, Switzerland, but that the president did not for fear of offending Jews and Israel. He specifically cited the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, an influential pro-Israel lobbying group.

“He made mistakes. He made bad choices. I’ve got kids who listen to their friends. He listened to those around him. I did not disown him.”
The son of a pastor, Wright has attended the HU ministers conference since he was a child — though he was not spotted at the conference in 2008 during the heat of the campaign debate over comments he made that many branded racially divisive.
The Rev. William Curtis, president of the ministers conference, said the Wright controversy is a “personal matter” for the Chicago pastor.
“Dr. Wright is a part of the church and he is a friend of the church and his views are personal,” Curtis said. “And they don’t represent the statements and views of the entire African-American pulpit.
“And whether or not he believes or perceives there were some strategies behind President Obama’s campaign, we are grateful to have an African-American president.”

The Iran-Iraq war started DURING the Iran Hostage Crisis. There’s a lot of speculation about the connection, some have claimed that Saddam was encouraged by the U.S. to attack Iran in order to exert pressure on them to release the hostages. But in the absence of direct evidence, the other theory is more likely: Saddam saw Iranian pre-occupation with it’s revolution and the cut-off of American aid to Iran as the perfect opportunity to exploit and grab some territory (much like Hitler thought he could take advantage of Stalin’s purges of the Red Army officer corps to attack the Soviet Union in 1940).
I believe the tactic of sending young men, unarmed, into the minefields was a tactic that came a bit after the hostages were released. At that point the Iraqi offensive was blunted and the Iraqis were dug into defensive positions, hence the need & opportunity for them to lay minefields. You don’t lay minefields over areas you hope to move over soon, they would restrict your potential options for movement.
Which raises the question: Is it likely that the Iranian President would be a chief interrogator and hence a fairly high member of the Revolutionary Guards during the Iranian hostage crisis, and then one of the idealistic youths who were sent, untrained and unarmed, to meet their future in Paradise by running through minefields? It doesn’t seem likely.
Could it be that the Iranian President’s resume is somewhat inflated for the purposes of internal politics? Considering the horrific loss of life during that war, perhaps a President who was the “right age” to have served in the war needs some military credentials – if he doesn’t have any, then perhaps create some whereby he’s got a good reason why no one can be found who served with him (since they are all dead)?

The city was in a bad situation in that case. If you have a decently mixed pool of applicants, and you give a test which only whites pass and no minorities pass, then you probably have a problem with the test.
If the city promoted the white applicants based on the test, they could have been sued by the minorities for using a test which has a disparate racial impact but which is not directly tied to job performance. The city decided to re-do the test, and got sued by the white applicants instead.
Sotamyer and the other two judges on the Court of Appeal applied existing case law and decided that the city acted reasonbaly. The Supreme Court decision (which I haven’t read yet) reversed that decision, but that doesn’t mean anything.
