I don’t know exactly the details of “try” to solve homelessness crisis in Seattle. But the main thing is to build more housing. A lot more. Public and private sectors. It probably means better zoning and better incentives to not just build luxury housing.

It isn’t punishing people for being homeless, especially when they don’t have other options. Best case, that means they leave the jungle and go somewhere else. Maybe a sanctioned place, maybe some other unsanctioned place, maybe another city or the suburbs.

    Two stories that are bubbling up that fit the Republican ID…

    No Homework for elementary school kids. One of our local-ish radio dullards did a whole hour on this assuring his listening audience that homework was effective as practice and taking calls about how people did homework as kids and survived. Missing the point as usual. Because you did something then, everyone should still do it now.

    People who spend their lives trying to figure out how children learn have looked at decades of data and several very large scale studies and found that homework has no effect on concept learning at the elementary level. In other words, the control groups of kids who had classroom instruction and no homework scored almost exactly the same as kids who did do homework on standardized tests. The conclusion is that lost sleep and family stress trying to make sure homework gets done daily isn’t worth it because young children don’t really learn any better by doing it. The proposal, introduce homework no earlier than 5th grade when it does start to show effectiveness.

    Why does this fit the conservative way of thinking? Well clearly the experts are wrong. They are just eggheads. Or worse there is a conspiracy among schools to make sure K-5 doesn’t learn anything and besides, we did homework and we’re fine. The Unions are pushing this to do less correcting of papers. Yes, and people survived by candle light so we should still be doing it that way and dot matrix printers are great so why get an ink-jet and BTW, did you know blood letting is still a great way to cure disease?

    Story number two, Seattle is considering lowering the speed limit to reduce fatalities. One of the local radio dullards challenged his co-host to stand in front of his Suburban and he’ll hit him at 25 MPH and see if he feels better than when he hits him again at 30MPH. Never mind that that should bring up some sense that driving a massive oversized vehicle in a dense urban setting is a little silly but not everyone drives a Suburban. Some drive Subuarus and insurance actuaries, studying decades of data will tell you that a cyclist/pedestrian is far, far, far more likely to survive a collision with a vehicle traveling 25 mph than they are one at 30 MPH.

    These aren’t anti-car warriors, these are insurance people whose motivation is to pay out as little in accidental death claims as possible and again, they’ve studied decades of data.

    But to the conservative radio host, WE KNOW BETTER! This won’t work. We have no experience in insurance liability and actuary or classroom education be we KNOW these new-fangled notions are just stupid. For we are conservatives and there can never be a better solution if it is dreamed of by academics! It was good enough for me, it’s good enough for the next generation, harumph!

    There may actually be some convincing arguments against either of these proposals but to state on faith that experts are wrong without counter evidence is so very, very asinine.

    Regarding the speed limit issue, a big fat “meh”. Downtown it won’t make any difference because it’s so damned gridlocked you’re lucky if you can average more than three MPH.     The first steam engines were invented 2000 years ago by the Greeks (and possibly earlier than that by the Persians), and the rocket was invented almost 1000 years ago by the Chinese who may have gotten some of the foundations of that concept from the Indians.

    The Abrahamic religions have been utterly dedicated to the destruction of Libraries and other institutions of science and learning for almost 4000 years. Christianity, Judaism and Islam are but the modern iterations of a Religion of death and destruction that has existed for at least four millennia.

    Eliminate faith-based belief systems, teach people that their eyes, ears, noses and tactile senses are what is real, instead of forcing them to go about rejecting the information that comes from those sources (which is what Religion is all about), and you will see the Human race become great.

    The notion of a “god” in the modernist sense is entirely self-contradictory and based entirely on lies. The purpose is to control people’s perceptions of the world while simultaneously teaching them to reject the information their own minds perceive about the world around them. Such people actively reject what their eyes and ears are telling them, if it conflicts with what their Priest, Pastor or Imam tell them is real, then they invariably become violent when contradicted. The Daesh and Hasid are proof of that.

    We don’t need a skinny old schizophrenic and chronic starvation victim sitting cross-legged in an icy cave on top of a mountain to tell us what causes thunder and lightning anymore.

    It’s long past time for the Human Race to grow up and stop believing in fairy tales and scary old myths that are nothing other than the vestiges of children’s stories and descriptions of food-poisoning related hallucinations told and retold around campfires for 6000 years by illiterate old men. The end product of that, is a corrupted social construct that prevents humans from realizing their full potential as an intelligent species.

    Faith-Based Religion is the ultimate evil.
