    depends on what you hope to get out of the trial.
    If part of what you hope is to obtain evidence of prejudice and disparagement of the defense supporting a claim of bias then you are showing some success.

    Adverse rulings alone won’t get it done (that’s a matter of law). Claims of bias must arise from an extrajudicial source. Things like intemperate words, frequent interruption of counsel, name calling, etc. can be just that. And no matter how frustrated a judge becomes, they are still utterly bound by the law. A better judge would keep right on ruling against the defendant (within the bounds of law) while tempering his words and not rising to the bait. Maybe the judge had a bad morning. Or maybe he’s a dick with self-control issues. Or maybe he’s got some animus toward the defendant or his representatives that impels him to be impatient on day one of trial. Having suffered an adverse ruling that he believes demonstrates biased speculation about his client, it’s a lawyer’s duty to document a record of extrajudicial bias if he can. Getting him to shout over an on-the-record argument and say “shut up” is a start.
