It’s not often I have the opportunity to disagree with The Stranger’s David Schmader and the ultra-conservative American Family Association at the same time, but Family Guy is by far the funniest show currently on broadcast television, and I have absolutely no qualms about watching it with my 12-year-old daughter. (Children benefit from a robust comedy education.)
Sure, Family Guy is offensive and often way over the top, but it is the near total freedom of the creators to both offend and disappoint that makes possible some of the show’s funniest moments.

Gross? Yeah. Relentless? Well, that’s kinda the point. But man did my daughter and I bust a gut watching this scene.

Sure, if you’re a manatee.
If you have not seen the South Park rip on Family Guy, do so. This explains perfectly my distate for the show. It’s just stupid. I saw nothing funny about that scene at all.
Compare it to the throwup scene in Team America, which is far superior. It had something that is essential to good comedy, that is completely foreign to Family Guy: context.
demo_kid spews:
I have to agree with pudge on this one. Family Guy just tries WAY too hard to be clever, and usually fails.
Then again, #3 is right too…
Highlander spews:
Actually, I thought it was funny (c’mon, who didn’t laugh their ass off watching the “complete and total Barf-O-Rama” scene in Stand By Me?). But (IMHO) it wasn’t the best scene on FG. My kids watch FG, and it has the added side effect of spurring real conversation about real issues, like the episode concerning abstinence contracts for teens.
Something else that’s got the kids talking: The Reality Coalition’s ads exposing the hypocracy of the “Clean” Coal movement. The ads are funny, well-done, and they make people ask some important questions.

“Another TJ”: Please learn to read. I did not imply, in any fashion, that South Park or Team America were broadcast television shows. I didn’t even imply that South Park was funnier than Family Guy, I only pointed out that a particular episode of that show demnostrates why many of us hate Family Guy. And as to Team America, I was just using that as an example of a puke gag that actually works, not saying that it was funnier broadcast television.
If I were going to present funnier broadcast television shows, I would have offered King of the Hill and The Office and The Simpsons (yes, still). And maybe Futurama someday (there’s strong indication Fox may be interested in bringing it back).

Your first post in this thread quotes Goldy as saying that “Family Guy” is the funniest show on broadcast television. You attempt to refute this by claiming that it’s not funny, using Parker and Stone as your “evidence.” This does nothing to address Goldy’s claim, as “Family Guy” could be unfunny and still be the funniest show on broadcast television if the other shows are less funny still. So I’m left with two options: either you intended to refute Goldy’s statement, or you intended to post a comment that was unrelated to the part of Goldy’s post you quoted.
Now, you claim to be intelligent, so I must conclude that you didn’t intend to post a non-sensical comment. Therefore, you meant your comment to refute Goldy’s claim that you quoted and used to frame your comment. However, if that’s true, then your comment at #15 is a lie. You DID intend it, you just pulled it off badly.
So, the only remaining question is, which of your comments is the lie?
pudge spews:
Another TJ@24:
Well, Pudge, I was going easy on you
Yawn.
Your first post in this thread quotes Goldy as saying that “Family Guy” is the funniest show on broadcast television.
True.
You attempt to refute this by claiming that it’s not funny …
True.
… using Parker and Stone as your “evidence.”
False. I used South Park not as evidence, but as explanation; e.g., “if you don’t understand why I think Family Guy is not funny, see this South Park episode which explains it.”
And I used Team America not as evidence that Family Guy is unfunny, but as an example of how the same basic joke can be done WELL.
This does nothing to address Goldy’s claim, as “Family Guy” could be unfunny and still be the funniest show on broadcast television if the other shows are less funny still.
I simply said it is not funny, which implies that it is not the funniest show on broadcast TV, since presumably I wouldn’t think NOTHING on broadcast is funny. And to clarify the point, I named some examples in the followup post.
So I’m left with two options: either you intended to refute Goldy’s statement, or you intended to post a comment that was unrelated to the part of Goldy’s post you quoted.
False. There is a third — and wholly obvious — option: that I intended to, and did, deny that Family Guy was funny AT ALL, which was, of course, part of Goldy’s assertion.
Nice try. (Well, not really. But it was a try.)

Another TJ spews:

False. If Goldy claimes a > b, claiming a is small does not address whether a > b, as b could be smaller still.
Also, there certainly are people who think there’s nothing funny on broadcast television. I don’t presume to know what other people are thinking. So I simply took you at your word. You evidently believe yourself possessed of this power to see into the hearts of others, as your comment @ 22 suggests.
Just FYI: You don’t have the power you think you have.
There is a third — and wholly obvious — option: that I intended to, and did, deny that Family Guy was funny AT ALL, which was, of course, part of Goldy’s assertion.
False. You claimed you found nothing funny about the clip Goldy posted, not the show as a whole. Regarding the show, you claimed to have a “distate” (sic) for it, not that it was not funny at all.
Of course, you also claimed that it is “just stupid,” but, as we’ve seen by your hilarious comments here, stupid can be funny indeed.
So, while you’ve provided a few laughs, I still have to request: better trolls, please.

False. I was claiming Family Guy is COMPLETELY UNFUNNY, and nothing can be less funny than that. You are wrong, as usual.
Also, there certainly are people who think there’s nothing funny on broadcast television.
Yes, and — as I said — that is why I clarified in the following post.
You evidently believe yourself possessed of this power to see into the hearts of others, as your comment @ 22 suggests.
@13, you said you made an argument, obviously against me. @15, I demonstrated your argument against me was flawed. @21, you said you were not arguing against me, only making true statements. @22 I said, you’re not fooling anyone (and you now take umbrage at this).
But @24 you admitted that you lied @21, and that I was correct @22: you said “I was going to go easy on you” and then proceeded to attack my comments you previously attacked @13 more directly, necessarily implying therefore that @13 was always intended as an attack on my initial comment, as I claimed, and as you denied.
So your feigned offense that I correctly called you out for lying @21, by your own tacit admission, is just sad.
You claimed you found nothing funny about the clip Goldy posted, not the show as a whole.
False. I did both.
Regarding the show, you claimed to have a “distate” (sic) for it …
Your use of “sic” is inappropriate, as there is nothing wrong with my usage of the word. Try a dictionary.
Of course, you also claimed that it is “just stupid,” but, as we’ve seen by your hilarious comments here, stupid can be funny indeed.
Incorrect. I said that AS OPPOSED to being funny, it is JUST stupid. The word “just” implies it is not funny.
You’re dismissed, with prejudice.
Yawn.
