– The latest from Libya.
– Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin is set to sign a bill that licenses and regulates medical marijuana dispensaries, once again illustrating that our own governor lied to us when she said she couldn’t do so because of federal policy.
– A police officer was involved in a two-vehicle accident on Rainier Avenue yesterday, but witnesses dispute the report that SPD released. SPD claims that his sirens were on, but multiple witnesses claim they weren’t on until after the accident occurred. Another witness claims the officer was talking on his cell phone at the time of the crash.

Just to point out something that should be obvious to most people – when police do their job every day, that’s not really news. When they do something extraordinary, like capture a bank robber or a serial killer, that’s on the news, just as it should be. And police officers who do heroic things should be honored for doing so.
But when they do things that harm the community, it’s often swept under the rug. That’s why I feel this story needed attention.

So that is why the US DOJ has opened an investigation on “allegations of use of excessive force and discriminatory policing” (http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/.....t-403.html) by the SPD because Seattle hipsters hate cops? And as I’ve repeatedly pointed out to you, nothing I’ve written in the 7 years I’ve been blogging has been “hating on the police”. I respect police officers who do their job well and want more of them.
Unfortunately, however, there are always officers who lie or break the law (or advocate for bad policy), and it’s important that we call those incidents out. Pointing that out is not hating cops, it’s a desire to have a better public police force.

Lee,
The news seems to be full of Seattle police getting in trouble. The Channel 7 folks have had a real field day with the Indian woodcarver shooting. Then there was the bit about the cop (last name “Colbain”) who stomped on some Hispanic guy’s head while the guy was handcuffed and on the ground. There was also an instance of a Seattle cop punching a black lady over some minor tiff.
Afer seeing these stories, I’m glad I don’t live in Seattle or King County.
rhp6033 spews:
Gee, I’ve been friends with cops, participated in ride-alongs, and even wrote a letter to the police department once commending a copy who gave me a ticket (he was so courteous and professional, I thought it deserved being mentioned).
One of the problems with being a cop is you have to be honest. And that means not writing reports which cover up your mistakes. Because once you do, your credibility in court is zero, and you can’t do your job anymore.
And if a copy is willing to write a false report to cover up his mistake in a traffic accident, then perhaps he is willing to do other things to cover up his mistakes as well – such as planting drugs on suspect, or even a gun on an innocent civilion who is accidently shot?
rhp6033 spews:
That should be “…commending a cop”.

Besides all his other problems, it seems that Newt Gingrich has another obstical to winning the Republican primaries: Only a few years ago he was all in favor of a national government mandated health insurance plan.
Newt Gingrich Was More Supportive Of Individual Mandates Than Mitt Romney
But there’s got to be more to this story than the fact that Newt Gingrich can’t decide which policy he supports. Heck, he switched policies three times in one week when he tried to criticze Obama for his actions on Libya. It’s that this information is coming out so soon.
Sure, it might be some good work by a journalist toiling through the archives to figure out what Gingrich said during a time when nobody was paying any attention to him. But I suspect the gem of the story is, more likely, the subject of “opposition research” released right after Gingrich’s announcement, in order to squelch any momentum before it starts.
So who would do that? Certainly not the Democrats. Having Gingrich as Obama’s opponant would be a gift beyond the wildest dreams to the Obama team. I suspect it is a potential Republican candidate, who doesn’t want Gingrich to compet with them for fund raising.

Citizens should not be able to cheat their neighbors by not buying insurance, particularly when they can afford it, and expect others to pay for their care when they need it.’ An ‘individual mandate,’ he added, should be applied ‘when the larger health-care system has been fundamentally changed.'”

This is a good thing regardless of whether the donor is Charles Koch or George Soros. Ever since Navy SEALs took down the world’s most wanted man Republicans have fallen all over themselves trying to deflect credit away from President Obama. But the more we learn about the operation, the clearer it becomes that the success of this mission absolutely was a result of gutsy presidential decision-making — without Obama, at a minimum we wouldn’t know OBL is dead, and there’s a damn good chance he’d still be at large.
Most immediately, Obama made a crucial high-risk decision: Put boots on the ground instead of taking him out with a drone or asking the Pakistanis to do it.
But the most crucial decision of all was made even before Obama became president: When he, as a candidate, announced to the world that if elected he would authorize “hot pursuit” of our enemies into Pakistan. Bush’s unwillingness to do that is the principal reason why he never caught up with OBL, because in the absence of a policy of aggressive pursuit across national frontiers, the terror chief was guaranteed a safe haven.

To really understand this issue you need to know a little history. First of all, Afghanistan is a place, not a country. No one living there considers himself an “Afghan;” he is a Pathan or Baluchi or Hazara or whatever, but whoever he is, he identifies with his tribe, family, and village — his qawm — and his no concept of country. To him, the arbitrary line drawn on maps by 19th-century British administrators, known as the Durand Line, constitution the present-day border between Afghanistan and Pakistan … is a fiction. The big problem with the Durand Line is that it cut the region’s predominant tribe, the Pathans, right down the middle — half of the tribe is in Afghanistan and the other half in Pakistan. The artificial border created by the Durand Line cuts through several other tribal areas, too. The locals, of course, have always moved freely across this line at will — to them, it is invisible. The ultimate result of this that part of Pakistan’s internationally-recognized land area, the North West Frontier Provinces, although ostensibly within Pakistan’s sovereignty, is a no-man’s land governed by no one. Even the Pakistani Army doesn’t go in there. They’re sort of equivalent to the Apache Territory circa 1870.
This no-man’s land turned out to be of great utility during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan because it provided Afghan resistance fighters a more or less unmolested staging area from which to supply, support, and launch attacks against Russian positions inside Afghanistan. The Russkies bombed it, and sometimes tangled with Pakistani fighters, but stopped short of sending ground troops into what was technically Pakistani territory, which allowed the resistance to operate there throughout that war.
It’s a natural place for hunted terrorists to hide out from American troops operating in Afghanistan.
Obama took a big risk by staking his candidacy on committing himself to violating Pakistani sovereignty to hunt down Al Qaeda terrorists. No other candidate had the balls to do it. During his 8 years in office, George W. Bush didn’t have the balls to do it. Obama did have the balls to do it — and got the terrorist where he lived.
Obama did more than deny Osama a sanctuary. He also denied every Republican challenger the most potent argument the GOP has: That Democrats are weak leaders, too weak to take on the world’s evildoers, and therefore unfit to be commander-in-chief.
It’s impossible now to hang the “weak leader” or “unfit to command” charge on President Obama. He just proved himself strong enough to take the fight to the terrorists — by taking the fight to the top terrorist and dropping it right in his lap. First a gut shot, then a head shot. GOPer assertions that the SEALs did this, and Obama had no part in it, won’t wash. America has been hunting Osama bin Laden since 1998, and of the three presidents we’ve had since then, only one was willing to sacrifice our relationship with Pakistan to get the terrorists on Pakistani territory — and there’s no frickin’ way they’ll get away with calling that one “weak” or “unfit to command.”
Obama just destroyed the best issue GOPers had going into 2012. The takedown of Osama bin Laden will be remembered as the defining moment of Obama’s presidency — and the precise moment when the GOP lost the 2012 election.

3. Nebraska ——6.6 ——–6.8
4. California ——5.5 ——–5.6

6. Missouri ——-4.3 ——–4.5
7. Iowa ———–4.0 ——–4.1
8. South Dakota 3.7 ——–3.8

# 53: In the first part of last week I had a meeting with a fellow who said he was from Montana where, in his words, “it takes 500 acres to raise a single cow”. He may have been exagerating, but the meaning was pretty clear.
In the second half of the week, I was in a car in central Florida, where I saw land so fertile that you could raise just about anything you wanted there, be it animal, fruit, or vegitable. A local was telling me that they were having a problem with the gaitors grabbing the newborn calves. It seems that they know when it’s calving season, and come from all over Florida to have a chance at getting at the herds which were repleat with thousands of newborn calves.
So, I’m tending to trust RR on this issue.
rhp6033 spews:
# 54: If I recall RR’s original treatise correctly, he was referring to cattle being born and raised for a while in Florida, then being sent elsewhere to mature, then being shipped off to grain lots for fattening, then to the butcher houses for processing. In that context, I’m not sure to that the “meat producer” lable applies, because we don’t know at what stage of the life cycle it refers.
