I give the non-SOTU speech a grade of “B.” Lots of good stuff about education, health care, energy and foreign policy, but he’s still not really dealing with the pressing question of the moment, namely what to do with the insolvent large banks.
Whether this is because he’s going to outfox the Tranche Class in the end or because the Tranche Class is well represented in his administration is not known. Yeah, sure, it’s all about utilitarianism, but since everyone from Greenspan to Krugman is saying what needs to be done, well, you know, it needs to be done. Not sure what bigger platform Obama could have had.
Obama explains things well in a lot of ways, and can form sentences. It’s rather jarring after all this time. The president is not a buffoon! Hurrah!

To date, I’ve not seen anyone explain exactly how you put a bank into receivership when you don’t know what the value of some of the bank’s assets are. Hell, you don’t even know if any given bank is insolvent unless you know what the value of the bank’s assets are.
When you read everyone from Greenspan to Krugman, you’ll note that their language is couched in squishy terms like “probably” and “in all likelihood”. They don’t really know all the facts, and the folks who do really know (if there is anyone who does know) aren’t talking.

I listened to a few minutes of Laura Ingraham last night. She was prattling about how Obama is sort of typically blamning the previous administration for the debt and the state of the economy, and when are they going to move on.
The first thing I thought was “So she thinks that 30 days into the next administration is when we have to stop talking about the effect of the previous administration’s policies?”
Then the second thing I thought was, “HEY! THE FUCKING RECESSION STARTED IN DECEMBER 2007!”
The Republican party really screwed Jindal and undercut his reputation for fresh policy ideas by forcing him to regurgitate the tiredest bunch of old, failed Republican standards that I’ve ever heard. He should never let these guys tell him what to say again, if he’s the smart guy they say he is.

He’s had some of the best guys in government working on the agenda for something like four months, not counting the eight years that Democrats spent building their agenda and organization before his election. You’re gong to see a whole gaggle of interesting, forward-looking, progressive, green legislation passing the Congress over the next few months to a year. Health care. Energy. Foreign policy. Regulatory reform. And you’re going to hate every bit of it. Just look at http://change.gov/agenda/ and try not to choke.
