Progressives have a lot of reasons to feel disappointed with President Obama and the Democratic Congress. This ain’t one of them.
UPDATE:
Oops. I trust TPM. But they apparently trusted FOX News, which has now retracted the report. It’s not that Warren won’t be appointed, it’s just that she hasn’t been. At least not yet.
Michael spews:
Yay!
YellowPup spews:
Agreed. It’s why it’s best to stay engaged. With the right pressure, maybe in Obama’s second term he’ll stop letting Goldman Sachs run/ruin the US economy.
Politically Incorrect spews:
Don’t get too excited: this ain’t gonna change Wall Street much. Remember, Wall Street’s major holding is the Democratic Party. For example, Goldman Sachs employees gave millions to Obama in 2008. They expect pay-back for those contributions.
Goldy spews:
False alarm. TPM had reported something that was first reported on FOX News, and has now been retracted. My bad.
N in Seattle spews:
Sigh, maybe not.
Since the original TPM note (now retitled “False Alarm”), there have been a:
Late Update saying that Faux News is retracting its report
Later Update from the White House pool saying there’s no actual news on Warren
The Boy Who Cried Wolf Update about a WH statement saying there’s no statement on the appointment
Kicking Dead Horse Update in which the WH says there’s nothing new to report about Warren
Dammit Barack, just make the fucking appointment already.
Michael spews:
Lame!
slingshot spews:
Isn’t the word being used ‘interim’? So Obama is going to appoint her to appease the base while kicking them in the nuts again. Then when her interim term ends he’ll appoint someone Wall street can kick in the balls.
N in Seattle spews:
slingshot:
If Warren is the first (interim) director, she gets to write its rules and regulations. And to define its organizational structure.
Yes, those can be altered later on by enemies of consumer protection, but it’s a lot tougher to rewrite someone else’s regs than to write the regs on a blank sheet.
Derek Young spews:
I think the issue is Obama’s use of the phrase “before we make it official.” I take that to mean it’s Warren but they haven’t completed vetting or want to maximize the announcement in some way.
It’s a big enough deal to the base and policy nerds in the party that they probably want to get some mileage out of it.
tpn spews:
Warren will get “appointed” in a purely symbolic gesture. Another example of the Democrats screwing their progressive base….
