Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced tonight that he is quitting the Republican party and changing his affiliation to independent.
The announcement came after Mr. Bloomberg gave a speech denouncing partisan gridlock in Washington, stirring renewed speculation that he is preparing to run as an independent or third-party candidate in 2008.
Bloomberg was a lifelong Democrat before switching parties to run for mayor in 2001. He is also a kajillionaire, with more than enough personal wealth to self-finance an independent campaign. Hmm.
ArtFart spews:
Great. Another Steve Forbes.
Superboy spews:
“Quite” right! he he . . . proofread much??
Goldy spews:
Yeah, yeah… so my daughter came home as I was posting, and hadn’t finished proofing.
N in Seattle spews:
He’s like Forbes only in that he can self-finance. Forbes is/was a reactionary pig, whereas Bloomberg is a Republican-of-convenience; the strange world of NYC politics basically forced him to switch out of his real political party to run for mayor. He is, in reality, a liberal Democrat.
I hate to say it, but conventional wisdom has it that a Bloomberg presidential run would hurt the Democrats more than the Republicans. Think Ross Perot, but on our side of the political ledger.
Mark The Redneck KENNEDY spews:
How many of you gullible fucking idiots are going to ride a bus to DL tonight to do your part to “save the planet”?
Just wondering…
Mark The Redneck KENNEDY spews:
Or are you all just like algore who just tells other people what THEY should do?
Mark The Redneck KENNEDY spews:
And for those of you stoopid enough, please go to carbonfundDOTorg to buy carbon offsets.
Let me know how that goes…
gullible fucking idiots…
GOPhate spews:
I will be there to exterminate any republicans who show up…

You are a waste of air. You produce nothing that helps anyone. You are simply bile gelled in human form. Any chance I can set you up with Dr. Kevorkian?
Tree Frog Farmer spews:
MarktheRetardedRedNeck pay your debt.
Dylan Carlson spews:
My guess: He’s just getting his name in the papers so that he can be first in line to run for Hillary’s soon-to-be open Senate seat.
The last thing America needs is a another New Yorker running for President.
WOW spews:
Well I think he should go back to his pre life, and be a democrat. The Independant’s don’t deserve to be infiltrated by a dino/rino….
Maybe he read about Pope’s big switch…..
David spews:
@5, 6, 7;
Yay, welchboy is back! There were too many intelligent, thoughtful and factual posts for the comment section of a blog.
busdrivermike spews:
Let me think…..hmmmm…Man with a record of achievement that would put Steve Jobs to shame, or pander bear Hillary?
NO EFFING BRAINER.
Trip spews:
Why can’t there be two New Yorkers running for President? I mean, Jesus, hasn’t the South had a long enough run by now?
And anyway, there’s *two* Thompsons running…
Speaking of empty suits, can anyone name a reason why Bloomberg even WANTS to run? What compelling vision does he bring to the table? What’s driving him to run as an independent? It’s not like he’s bringing some kind of populist Ross Perot mojo, right?
Like Fred Thompson, it seems like he’s just positioning to run because it might be a neat-o thing to do at this point in life.
Where is he on the war? The economy? Health care? What’s he done that folks west of the Hudson can identify with?
RightEqualsStupid spews:
Man this is just MORE FUCKING DEVISTATING NEWS for the crumbling GOP. This is no doubt the first step to an independent campaign that will cripple the Publican party. Dems by 12-14 points if Bloomberg and Hagle go through with their plans for a third party run. You right wing traitors must be trembling in your baby boots.
The Guy Without A Car spews:
I ride the bus everywhere I go, and unlike some people on this blog, I pay my gambling debts.
Roger Rabbit spews:
This country doesn’t need another Ross Perot.
Roger Rabbit spews:
This planet would never run out of hydrocarbons if we could somehow capture what comes out of Redneck’s ass.
Roger Rabbit spews:
If you ran a pipe from Redneck’s ass to the engine you’d have a Perpetual Motion Machine.
Puddybud Who Left the Reservation spews:
I hope he runs. He is a long time RICH Democrat.
But wait…, only rich people are Republicans…
Another worthless loony Moonbat! myth shot to hell!
Puddybud Who Left the Reservation spews:
How can Voice of Asses Wiping write he’s a rat jumping ship? He’s returning to his roots, the Dip Shit Lollipop!
Particle Man spews:
N in Seattle, a Bloomberg campaign might well send the final Pres and VP selection to the US house and senate where the D’s have just enough majority delegations to select two democrats. The electorial congress could become a thing of the past.
mr. smitty spews:
Trip @ 15: He’s liberal on social issues (pro-choice, gay marriage, gun control).
He was for the war, but talks a lot about competent management so my guess is he’d be along the lines of McCain’s “it was okay to go in but it was mismanaged” mantra.
He raised taxes in NYC post-9/11 when Bush was cutting them nationally.
I believe he’s relatively liberal on healthcare – a public/private partnership to guarantee reasonable health care coverage is available.
If he runs, I’ll definitely consider supporting him.
delbert spews:
@24 – Since when does “liberal on social issues” mean restricting the right to self defense? Sounds totalitarian to me. A classical liberal would embrace gun rights just like the other 9 amendments to the Bill of Rights.
BTW, every argument that can be made in favor of abortion can also be used for gun control. Think about it. Pro-choice = pro-gun. Lots of hypocrits on both sides there. I’m pro-choice and pro-gun myself.
