As reported yesterday on Daily Kos, the GOP is pulling out all the stops in WA-05, sliming Democratic challenger Peter Goldmark with outrageous lies and dirty tricks. You know, like harassing voters with obscene, automated phone calls, waking people up at all hours of the night, claiming to be coming from the Goldmark campaign. (Would you vote for a candidate who robo-calls you at 2 am? The McMorris campaign didn’t think so.) Local police and the FBI are now investigating.
Why are McMorris and the Republicans resorting to such desperate tactics? Because, well… they’re desperate.
As reported this morning by The Hill, the NRCC just sent to donors its “Final Push List” of the 33 GOP members and candidates “most in need of support right now.” And lookie who’s on it.
In an e-mail to congressional officials, NRCC PAC Director Jenny Sheffield states, “…it’s crucial at this point to send in some late money to some [of] our campaigns. The funds our candidates receive now will allow them to increase their TV buys and will make the difference on Nov. 7.
“I have attached our Final Push list for those Members and candidates most in need of support right now. If your boss has not maxed out to those on the attached list, please ask him or her to consider sending a check from a leadership PAC and/or reelection account … IMMEDIATELY!”
Republicans have also sent the list to lobbyists, seeking donations. The NRCC list (see chart) has many endangered Republicans, including four each from Ohio and New York, and three from Pennsylvania. It also contains some surprises, such as Rep. Cathy McMorris (R-Wash.), whose seat was considered safe earlier this month.
I’m not one to say “I told you so,” but… no wait… I am. I told you so. I’ve been warning the Spokane media for months that one of the biggest stories of the ’06 midterms was developing in their own backyard. Well, welcome to the party guys.
Other at-risk Northwest Republicans on the Final Push List? Well, Dave Reichert in WA-08 and Bill Sali in ID-01 of course. As The Hill points out, it’s gonna be an awfully long election night for House Republicans if they’re so worried about protecting seats in conservative districts in places like Idaho and Eastern WA.
Still don’t believe me that Goldmark can win? Then perhaps you’ll believe McMorris:
In Washington’s 5th Congressional District, where former speaker Thomas S. Foley (D) famously lost in 1994 when Republicans seized control of the House, confirmation of an unexpectedly strong Democratic challenge emerged in recent days from a well-placed source: the Republican incumbent, Rep. Cathy McMorris.
“It’s a closer race than I first imagined,” she told Sen. Larry E. Craig (R-Idaho), according to the Spokesman-Review, a newspaper in Spokane. Changing voter attitudes in her conservative, mostly rural district, she said, have been “pretty dramatic.”
McMorris and Craig apparently thought they were speaking privately before the start of a campaign teleconference with veterans. But an operator had connected Spokesman-Review reporter Jim Camden, who was on mute and could not announce his presence.
Craig, who is not up for reelection, told McMorris that she was not alone in feeling Democratic heat. “The new numbers are just devastating,” he reportedly said.
McMorris’s Democratic opponent is Peter Goldmark, a rancher whose surprising strength has attracted the support of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which last week began spending $323,000 on television ads opposing McMorris.
That said, Republicans are sinking millions of dollars into Washington state in a last ditch effort to save McMorris and Reichert’s asses, and we can’t let Peter and Darcy become victims of their own success. This is the final push, and if we want to win we need to stay competitive dollar for dollar.
299 of my readers have now contributed $22,969.38 via HA’s Act Blue page, but we need to do more. If you care about the future direction of our nation, please give whatever you can to Darcy and Peter so that they can afford to get their message out to voters and respond to their opponents’ lies. And if you’ve already given all you can, then please personally plead with your friends and family to give whatever they can afford.
We’ve got the issues. We’ve got the candidates. We’ve got the wave. The rest is up to you.

Hurting the Troops?
Democrats attack GOP incumbents for voting against funding troops. Some ads are wrong, others lack context.
October 23, 2006
Modified: October 23, 2006
Summary
Well over a dozen Democratic ads claim incumbent GOP lawmakers voted against benefits and funding for the nation’s military. The Republicans are accused variously of opposing a $1,500 bonus, expanded health care, trauma care, and job assistance for troops. Some of the ads are false. The rest are true, but don’t tell the whole story.
Analysis
The claims below are taken from 18 political ads that appeared in 14 districts across the country between Sept. 29 and Oct. 19. All of the ads are from Democratic candidates or groups. Some are misleading or false, and those that are true paint only part of a larger picture. Voters might get a different impression once informed of other relevant facts.

Let’s fact-check FactCheck:
“At least five ads this year claim a Republican incumbent voted against expanding healthcare for National Guard and Reservists. It’s true that they did vote against such an amendment, but … ” (nuanced nitpicking follows)
“A Sept. 29 ad by Democrat Baron Hill of Indiana accuses Republican rival Mike Sodrel of voting against ‘increased death benefits for families.’ It’s true that Sodrel voted against a measure that would have allowed some families to get more than the current maximum of $500,000 in death benefits. However …”
(nuanced nitpicking follows)
“Three ads, two against Republican Taylor in North Carolina and one against Sodrel in Indiana, accuse incumbents of voting ‘against job assistance for veterans.’ … The ads refer to an amendment by Democrat Dale Kildee of Michigan that would extend a civilian job assistance program to employed and unemployed veterans who discovered their jobs were outsourced to foreign competition while they were serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. … The amendment failed on a strictly party-line vote, with 196 Democrats and the lone Independent voting in favor and 228 Republicans voting against.” (Nuanced nitpicking omitted)
“We found 11 ads by Democrats accusing Republican incumbents of voting against a $1,500 bonus for US troops. The ads refer to an amendment by Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan, which would have given the troops such a bonus. The measure failed by the narrowest possible margin on a mostly party-line vote Oct. 17, 2003 … 211 Republicans voted against the amendment. It lost on a tied 213-213 vote. What the ad fails to mention is that money for the bonus would have come at the cost of funds for reconstruction of Iraq, which Republicans argued was of critical importance.” (Nuanced nitpicking included)
So FactCheck.org thinks Democratic ads saying Republicans voted against the $1,500 are misleading because the money would have come from Iraq reconstruction – even though every single House Republican voted against the bonus amendment? Tell me again how those ads are misleading. And FactCheck.org doesn’t mention that a large amount of Iraq reconstruction funds have been stolen, and the rest has been largely ineffectual. When you examine FactCheck’s comments closely, it looks a whole lot like a GOP sympathizer wrote these comments.

So what? When the Republicans stop running attack ads on Democrats blowing up minor votes on obscure amendments into major issues, and selectively ignoring a candfidate’s broader support on an issue, Denmocrats will too.
Remember the good old days? “John Kerry has repeatedly opposed weapons vital to winning the War on Terror: Bradley Fighting Vehicles, Patriot Missiles, B-2 Stealth Bombers, F-18 Fighter Jets and more. Kerry even voted against body armor for our troops on the front line of the War on Terror.”
Turns out that’s not quite right.
Roger Rabbit spews:
The problem with FactCheck.org is they take things too literally. They expect news reports or political ads to be written with the precision of a scientific paper or engineering analysis. In mass communications, conveying an accurate sense of what happened is important, and the kind of trivia and hair-splitting that FactCheck.org gets bogged down in doesn’t add value. The Democratic ads all have factual basis; the Republicans did vote against the interests of our soldiers, reservists, and guardsmen in each of those cases.

Even though the words of the Constitution don’t change, the law evolves as society changes. It has to, or the law would become irrelevant. Wingnut literalists want to freeze the meaning of the Constitution’s words in 1796! That’s because they like the economic system that existed then — a few people owned big plantations (and didn’t work), and labor was cheap (slavery was legal). My other problem is illustrated when people who advocate it talk about “closure”, or “society’s revenge”, or someone being “made to pay”…and is further proven out by the fools dancing with joy outside the prison gates when some serial killer or other such monster is executed.

I’ve really enjoyed voting in person at our polling place. It’s a middle-school auditorium, and since they started using fill-in-the-ovals ballots, many people have chosen to sit down in the auditorium seats instead of standing at those little “boothlets”. Often you’ll see a husband and wife sitting together with their ballots and the voter’s pamphlet, going through everything one last time and making sure they’ve got it right. Often the PTA would raise a few extra bucks by selling coffee and pastries to the voters. Really nice, mellow social atmosphere. As we adopt the dreaded Diebold touch-screen machines, I suppose that’s all going to become a thing of the past. After this year, we’ll probably sign up for permanent absentee ballots, even if the county doesn’t go to all-mail voting.

If I had the chose between life be hind bars and being killed I would probably chose death because the thought life behind bar is much more horrible .
But government that tell people that they shouldn’t murder others should not be involved in state sanction murder.
It is just like America is suppose to be better then the terrest that is why we should not be involved in torturing prisoners like our enemy do because supposedly we are better then that .
Even though it may be more satisfying to torture them .
That is why in ww2 the germans surrendered to the american in droves because they believed that we would not hurt them and they would treat them fairly. Were as on the Russian front they fought to the death most times .
It is kind of like the school killing that just happened to the Amish . It was very very much more powerful and honorable for them to forgive there killer.. They did not lower them selves to the brute level of the killer they forgave him that was very powerful .
That is what not killing people would do for us we should not lower our selves to the level of the killer for some level of satisfaction we might get from doing so.
America Should be better then that. But I guess we are not.

Is al Qaeda’s smart move to stop fighting?
by Donald Sensing
I caught part of the president’s press conference this morning and a thought struck me when he renounced, again, the idea of setting a timetable for withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. It’s an idea I’ve denounced myself: “Setting a timetable for withdrawal only notifies al Qaeda of the date of their triumph.”
So I started wondering this morning why the terrorists in Iraq seem not to understand that time-mandated withdrawal from Iraq is practically central to opponents of President Bush specifically and the Republicans generally. And surely they have to realize that there is probably no one who would more like to start drawing down US forces from Iraq than President Bush himself, especially if he can make meaningful reductions before the two parties have their 2008 conventions.
So, imagining myself as an al Qaeda strategist, I would be asking the terrorist leadership why they are stepping up the violence now. Okay, dumb question: they want to influence the 2006 elections

Pelosi, Murtha Call on Terrorists to Pull Out of Iraq
by Scott Ott
(2006-10-21) — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, and Rep. John Murtha, D-PA, today issued a joint statement calling on terrorist groups and armed militias to pull out of Iraq, or at least begin a “phased redeployment.” They also called for sanctions against any nation that harbors or funds those terrorists.
Until this week, the Democrat leaders had been calling on the U.S. to retreat from Iraq, but today Rep. Pelosi said, “it suddenly occured to us that the terrorists and so-called insurgents are the aggressors.”
“We realized that if the U.S. pulls out,” she said, “the shooting, bombing and beheading continues. But if the terrorists leave, or if their funding dries up, then the fighting stops and we can build a lot more schools, clinics, water purification systems and electrical generation plants.”
Standing with the California lawmaker at a news conference, Rep. Murtha, a former Marine, unveiled what he called “our new Democrat vision for Iraq to become a country that can defend, sustain and govern itself, a country which will serve as an ally in this war on terror.”

Hi Klake. You should have heard the former Iraqi governor on Al Franken’s show explaining the 2 reasons why our troop presence only makes things worse in Iraq. As long as we are backing up the Shia, they don’t have to negotiate a solution with the Sunnis, thus the violence continues. Our presence is also a recruiting tool for the Sunnis (insurgents) and if we weren’t there, they would have to convince Iraqis to attack Iraqis, and that would be far more difficult.
A very eye opening interview.

Weak? I’ll tell you what’s weak — thinking you can have cops and prisons without taxes. Defunding government services. Not funding homeland security — now that’s weak! Here’s the GOP’s pathetic record on homeland security:
Nov. 14, 2001: Senate Democrats propose $15 billion for homeland security; the White House warns against “permanent spending on other projects that have nothing to do with stimulus and that will only expand the size of government.”
Dec. 4, 2001: Senate Appropriations Committee votes 29-0 in favor of $13.1 billion for homeland security; the next day, Bush threatens to veto it.
Dec. 6, 2001: Senate Republicans reduce homeland security funding by $4.6 billion.
Dec. 19, 2001: Under pressure from White House, House-Senate conferees eliminate another $200 million of funding for airport security, port security, nuclear facility security, and postal security.
June 7, 2002: Senate votes 71-22 for $8.3 billion of homeland security funding; the next day, Bush’s advisors recommend a veto.
July 19, 2002: Under White House pressure, homeland security funding is further reduced by cutting money for food security, cyber security, nuclear security, airport security, port security, drinking water security, coordination of police and fire radios, and lab testing to detect chem-bio weapons.
Aug. 13, 2002: Bush decides not to spend $2.5 billion appropriated for homeland security on the grounds of “fiscal responsibility.”
Jan. 16, 2003: White House reacts to Democratic efforts to increase homeland security funding by stating, “The Administration strongly opposes amendments to add new extraneous spending.” Later that day, Senate Republicans vote against funds for smallpox vaccine.
Jan. 23, 2003: Senate Republicans cut security funding for the FBI, FEMA, INS, TSA, Coast Guard, and National Nuclear Security Administration.
Feb. 3, 2003: Bush submits a 2004 budget cutting homeland security funding by nearly 2 percent.
Feb. 14, 2003: Senate Democrats request money for smallpox vaccine, police and fire radios, and public transportation security; no Republicans support it.
March 21-25, 2003: Republicans defeat 7 amendments to bolster homeland security.
April 2, 2003: Senate Republicans reject Democratic amendment to provide $1 billion for port security.
April 3, 2003: Republicans reject protection of commercial airliners from shoulder-fired missiles and four other pro-homeland security amendments.
June 2003: House Republicans reject Democratic proposal to raise $1 billion for homeland security by reducing tax cuts for 200,000 millionaires by an average of $5,000 each (from $88,000 to $83,000).

Brig.-Gen. Ed Leacock, deputy commander of detention operations at Guantanamo Bay, said officials are gathering evidence for the hearings now. Officials have also identified individuals who could work with the men as their representatives during the hearings, but no appointments have been made yet.
It was not clear Wednesday whether any of the 14 men have been questioned by the military interrogators. The hearings – officially called Combatant Status Review Tribunals – for the 14 men would determine whether or not they are enemy combatants, and therefore subject to a military trial.
The 14 men include Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who allegedly planned the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, as well as the alleged architect of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole and the alleged plotter of the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.
They had been held in CIA custody at secret locations, and were transferred several weeks ago to the Guantanamo Bay detention centre in southeastern Cuba.
Military leaders, who took a few reporters on a tour of the detention centre Wednesday, said the 14 high-profile detainees have not created any problems for the guards. And they said other detainees know the men are there, but have had little reaction to that.

I wasn’t trying to be obtuse. I have been shielded from paying while on active duty, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t know what health care costs.
Inflation has never been 18%. There has been double digit increases in what PEOPLE pay for their health care insurance, but that doesn’t mean that the VA’s costs have increased at the same level.
Almost all health care insurance companies are FOR PROFIT organizations. VA hospitals do not have the same costs as normal hospitals. There also has been a steady decline in their patients as WWII veterans die.
A story ran in our newspaper here, the Olympian, about a man dying in the parking lot of the VA hospital in the Spokane region. The hospital called 911 for him and everyone was in an uproar over it. The VA hospital had recently started closing at 4:30 pm every day, because they only had a few patients ever come in at night.
I can use the VA hospital for my service connected disabilities, but for everything else wrong with me, I have to use TRICARE (Madigan).
