Not Even Oklahoma Could Want this Team

by Lee — Sunday, 3/16/08, 10:42 pm

Tonight’s Sonics’ score is not a misprint. They lost to Denver 168-116. Only one other team has given up that many points in a regulation game since 1962. At least Northwest hoops fans can still root for Wazzu, a 4-seed in the NCAA Tournament, Gonzaga (7 seed), Oregon (9 seed), or Portland St (a 16 seed playing Kansas). Both Wazzu and Gonzaga play Charlotte area teams, Winthrop and Davidson. Unfortunately, Gonzaga has to play Davidson in Raleigh. Wazzu plays in Denver. The fun starts Thursday.

Between a Monday St. Patrick’s Day and the first round of March Madness, this will be the most unproductive work week in our nation’s history.

Guess what. OK will not get this team .. they just get the franchoise and THEN they build a team.

I want to know, if sports are publicly finaced, why are they still privately owned?

It seems to me that Congress should nationalize the sport teams and then sell them to the cities like surplus army bases. Hell we own the Hskies, why not owning the Soonics?

BTW … my understanding si that the OK twam will be called the Supesooners.

SJ, let me make this plain and simple:

    FUCK THE OKLAHOMA CITY CARPETBAGGERS

    FUCK CLAYBOY

FUCK THE REDNECK MAFIA (with apologies to MTR – okay, maybe not)

Forget the team Formerly Known As Sonics. I’ll bet they wind up moving them to Las Vegas sooner or later anyway, after I read that Clayboy is holding OKC hostage for $100m in upgrades to their five-year-old arena. And considering David Stern’s ambitions to take the NBA global, Clayboy could wind up selling out to Europe, and they’d be the Airbus Sonics.

Ol’ Bill Boeing would be spinning in his grave at that.

Now as for me, I’m not sure which season ticket I’ll be picking this week – either one for the new D-League side that opens up shop in the fall, or UNR WolfPack tix…….

168 points? That’s how much Princeton University scores in an entire season. (And they’re almost always winning seasons. Godawful boring, but winning.)

@6: Daddy Love – good one! But I think you meant 3A champion Ranier Beach vs UW.

Well – the sonics traded away all the good players and all we have are rookies that can’t play any defense.

The reason this will be the most unproductive work week is that the jobs and the economy are going SOUTH. GWB kept telling us how the economy was “fundamentaly sound” – but what he meant was – his deregulation had screwed things up and things just hadn’t hit the fan yet.
    But they have now:
    Dollar plummeting in free fall
    Bear Stearns – corporate welfare
    Stock market tumbling again
(I love the video of CNBC’s Jim Cramer saying that Bear Stearns will be FINE!Just last week…)
WAMU – down the toilet – they are also screwed on the subprime loans and are scrambling just to keep funds in the bank.

I know of three people who have been screwed over at the last minute on loans by WAMU and the story in the paper about the guy who can’t get his money out of WAMU on a “safe” investment….

    Seriously

I just looked out my window and saw ..

    Seattle.

Aren’t we supposed to be different?

Since the Storm are staying, why not invest resources in building up the WNBA here i nota major attraction?

Look, the same issues pertain to the Storm at Key as do for the Sonics, except for attendance. BUT … w/o the Soooners, why wouldn’t the local athletic crowd be attract5ed to the girls in shorts sport?

For a small portion of the subsidy the testacle enabled team wants, we could put money into promoting the Storm!

    e.g.

    Seattle Storm Festival

Seattle loves festivals, We don’t have one in Mid Winter/basketball season. Why not make Key Arena the home to a Girl Ball Festival? This could work with the UW and the Zags, to include collegiate sports as well … maybe an allstar type effort? how about a kind of world games format, hosted by the Storm but inviting teams from China, Cuba, Canada, etc.

Given r another unique aspect of the Seattle scene we could call it the Seattle Stom Swoosh Festival!

We can use it to highlight our GBL cxommunity, our multicuturalism, the Sate with three women in top jobs etc.

    Here is the logo

    The Swoosh!

Who needs the Saddersooners when we can have the Sooperswoosh?

    Just a reminder:

After massive 200 billions invested last week, and with the U.S. government encouraging foreign banks to buy our mortgage-backed securities at fire-sale prices (“It’s 11:00 a.m. – do you know where your mortage is?”), and another 1/4 point rate discount over the weekend (with another full point cut anticipated at the regular meeting tomorrow), and the government guaranteeing Bear-Stern’s loan porfolio prior to it’s purchase by another big investment firm, the DJIA is at 11:00 a.m. PDT at -negative 94.11 from the opening bell. This brings the DJIA to an average gain of 1.64% for the seven + years of the Bush administration – not even keeping up with inflation.

Thanks, Hannah. Glad to know that there’s more than one Coug on this board. If all else fails, we can at least agree on the Crimson and Gray.

SJ, great idea on the Storm. Building up interest in the women’s game can only help. Now if the new owners will get around to signing a few more players (only 4 under contract right now!).
