With the Green Bay victory in Atlanta tonight, the Seahawks are playing for the right to host the NFC Championship next weekend. They take on Chicago at 10am tomorrow morning.
Make Steroid use required for professional athletes. Mere mortals are no fun. I want to see a Tackle pull the heart out of a Quarter back on the field. A used up jock is sad, better they die in battle then limp into oblivion and live out their lives on food stamps.
Oh, and we need an instant death penalty for jaywalking. I know views are not fair or popular, I am a conservative.
Well, I would not go as far as naked, but protecting parts of the body so well that they can be used as weapons to make helmet on helmet brain damaging hits is not a symptom of not enough protection, but of too much.
A couple of decades ago some friends used to get together to play a pickup game of tackle football, during the NFL season. No helmets, or pads, and you decently tackled with your head up for fear of hurting your own.
The big hitters have nothing to fear when it comes to their own personal safety.

I’m guessing that your wife wants that for reasons other than protecting the players from longterm head injuries. Representing a former NFL player for the consequences of his multiple head injuries, I’m not sure that your wife’s hope isn’t a good idea. People don’t tackle with unprotected heads.

Seriously, Chicago’s record consists of a lot of wins against sub-par teams. They beat the Bills (4-12), the Vikings twice (so bad they fired their coach and went 6-10), Lions twice (6-10), Dolphins (7-9), Cowboys (going 1-7 under Wade Phillips), and so on. They beat only 3 teams with a winning record in the regular season and split with the Packers. Their offense is 30th in the league. Yes, in the league. They’re not as good as 11-5 sounds.
This one is not settled by a long shot. These guys are totally beatable.

Oh yeah, and the Saints had a much-vaunted defense (#4 in the league), and we lit them up twice as we split with NO and beat them when it counts.
If I may say so, the Bears are what we thought they were!

By the end of the day local yahoos and sportscasters will realize that the Seahawks are one amazing individual effort away from being a really sub-par team.

I like watching a good football game but Safeco Field is more to my taste in general.
Of course drunks spoil it everywhere – the attitude towards drinking at Safeco is heavy-handed bordering on the totalitarian but the behavior of lit up fans really puts a bad taste in your mouth.

“Gov. Chris Gregoire, who once advocated boosting state spending by billions of dollars, has become the budget-cutter in chief. She’s rolled out unprecedented proposals to slash services to the poor, eliminate state agencies and restructure government as a way to close a budget shortfall approaching $5 billion. And she’s done it with an air of frustration, impatience, and a certain weariness with Olympia politics. …
“It’s a Twilight Zone where members of her own Democratic Party are balking at some of the proposals, while Republicans largely applaud. Senate Minority Leader Mike Hewitt, R-Walla Walla, recently greeted the governor before she met with members of his caucus saying, ‘welcome to the friendly caucus.’ Gregoire says her transformation is a product of the enormous budget shortfall — and an evolution in her thinking. ‘I have matured,’ she said during an interview at her office last week.”
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Matured into what? A Republican? An anti-government budget hawk? Or is this just a lack of political courage to fight for public programs? Either way, she has absolutely backstabbed the progressive, liberal, and Democratic activists who worked so hard to elect her, and the Democratic and independent voters who voted for her.

@13. as a native of a division rival, I’ve seen my team play in all but four Nfl cities. Raider fans have more class and courtesy than Seahawk fans. The only worse fans in the Nfl are in Philly. But the game I saw in Philly, my team was down 17 with less than 10 to play and won.
But only in Seattle has a fan taken my cap and tossed it to the lower level. Before kickoff even.

Well, now we get a brutal game between two arch-rivals who have played against one another since 1921, the longest rivalry in the NFL. Great greats have played in these games; many are in the Hall of Fame. It will continue a tradition of classic, smash-mouth football from the original black & blue division.
One the other side, the Jets take their trash-talking noise to the next level against another very old football tradition, the Steelers (who have won more SuperBowls than any other team). It will be a great weekend of football.

Don’t live by QB rating alone.
Ryan 28 TDs vs. 9 INT, 13 wins, Best record in NFC.
Rogers, 28 TDs vs. 11 INT, 10 wins, didn’t win division.
Vick, 21 TDs vs 6 INT, 10 wins (rushing off the chart, so I would concede Vick is deserving)
Freeman, puh-leeze, 25 tds vs. 6 INTs, 10 wins, didn’t make the playoffs.
13 wins. That is all.

OK, so let’s go with Football Outsiders’ DYAR and DVOA. For both figures Aaron Rogers is #1 in the NFC.
13 wins. That is all.
Except that the whole point of having a Pro Bowl in the first place is to recognize outstanding individual play despite the success of the players’ respective teams. If this is the sole reason to choose Matt Ryan over Aaron Rogers, then I think you’ve just made my case for me.

May not be right, by the QB is the leader of the team. Ryan had a better TD/INT ratio but fewer yards than Rogers while leading his team to the #1 seed as opposed to a wild card. That weighs heavily in the mind of the non stat geek.
From a pure stat perspective Ryan isn’t the pick. Weigh stats and RESULTS and he ran away with it.

That would make more sense if the fan voting were the primary reason for the snub, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Granted, it’s a couple of weeks before the teams were announced and there was still time to vote, but, as of December 8th, Aaron Rogers was in the top five total vote getters.
Unfortunately, we don’t know how the players and the coaches voted, but it seems clear that the fan vote wasn’t the deciding factor. Presumably, both the players and the coaches would know that the point is to recognize outstanding individual performance.
Which does give rise to a very legitimate question: what, exactly, did Matt Ryan do during the season to warrant a vote over Aaron Rogers? Hand the ball off to Michael Turner?
29
czechsaazspews:
