If I trusted Seattle Police to act well, the South Precinct memo described here would be pretty benign. Your partner is speeding “hey slow down, man” is probably a better response than making a formal complaint.*
But many people don’t trust the police. I don’t know if they’re just doing it for minor things or if things that need to be corrected are being handled internally or at all. A department where no offers could take down rapist Donald Trump’s flag or gravestone of people who offers shot probably won’t be able to correct bad behavior.

And that was not improper election interference.
Yes.
This comment is whaddaboutism.
But sometimes, especially whenever we are trying to understand legal issues and decisions of prosecutors, precedent is helpful.
Being a candidate for elected office is not and never has been a grant of immunity from criminal public inquiry. And history demonstrates ample evidence and examples of politicians including filed candidates being investigated if there is credible evidence supporting such an investigation.
The entire nation watched somewhat unbelieving in the months following his election loss as then President Trump and Republicans in general, grew increasingly frustrated and irrational in their efforts to change the outcome. Those same Republicans have done all they could to memory-wipe that. But we all saw it happen. And the House investigation clearly showed a fuck ton of very credible evidence of criminal wrong doing.

11,
Whenever I read anything like this I find it helps to keep in mind a couple of really important things about race in America.
The first is the more obvious one, that being that race is not a biologically scientific concept having any origins in objective reality beyond human social constructs. It’s just a thing we made up. And like all such thing humans make up, it is incredibly plastic and our ideas about race have shifted and changed immensely over time. How we view race today is very different even from how we viewed race a half century ago. And it’s really important to keep that in mind because of the second thing.
And the second thing is that nearly any “think piece” about race like this one in The Hill begins from a premise that white identity and “whiteness” is the default setting, and therefor the focus for any exploration of racial conflict is made from that perspective, and the identified “problem” for which a solution is being sought is always all the non-white identities and how those identities can be “integrated”. This is a deeply misleading perspective. At least in terms of our concepts or race in America the source of the problem or the focus for seeking solutions to racial concept is and always has been the default norm concept of “whiteness” and white identity.
And just like our broader entirely social concepts of race have changed a lot over time, so too have our concepts of “whiteness”. For example, at one time Mediterranean people were not considered included in our social definition of “whiteness” in America. In many Hispanic families and cultures in America, individuals, family members, family groups, family histories, their identities, and their origins are considered “white”, even while still simultaneously self-identifying as very, very Hispanic. Quite a few Native Americans simultaneously identify as “white”. Yet among other groups those self-identities and definitions would be rejected. There’s not a lot of agreement about what “whiteness” is anymore. Nevertheless, more than anything else, it is our enduring social concepts of “whiteness” that are primarily responsible for racial conflict in America.
And fundamentally those conflicts and the tensions they expose have a lot to do that increasing erosion of certainty around the idea of “whiteness”, substantially because so many institutions and cultural norms are established around some shared understanding of “whiteness”. Thus ultimately “whiteness” itself has become the problem. And the solution lies in the eradication of “whiteness”.
Now of course, as the Shit-Lord Crybaby reads that he sees a red-flag statement that he’s going to tell himself justifies all of his vile bigotry and race-based hatred and fear. Who cares? What really matters in fact are the many, many “moderate” and “liberal” white people who would read those same words and be significantly unsettled by them. These aren’t white supremacists. In many cases these are people with almost no real concept of their own ethnicity. They just know they are “white”. And that matters to them. A lot.
We needn’t wonder why, of course. Being white in America conveys enormous privilege. And just about every white person knows it. Even if they might deny the existence of “white privilege” their powerfully negative reaction to the idea of the eradication of “whiteness” belies their own denial. To be clear here, I’m not talking about St Fucking Patrick’s Day, or Columbus Day parades, or banning the teaching of Plato or Shakespeare. That’s European or Classical ethnicity and culture. That’s not “whiteness”. After all these are often people who have almost no connection to any of that. That is not what they are reacting to.
It’s of course the loss of the privilege. It’s the favorable tipping in the balance of respect, deference, opportunity, benefit of the doubt and second chances that accrue constantly and almost invisibly to anyone identified as “white”. Eradicate the social construct of “whiteness” and the primary and most significant source of racial conflict disappears.

So I’ve kind of checked out on the media for a while. They aren’t really making much sense unless they are just linking to a court order or reporting on a date being set.
The rest of it is really just a lot of mid-summer trash competing for our attention.
Trump’s not going to jail this year or even next.
The Declaration of Independence isn’t a get-out-of-jail-free card in White Guy Political Monopoly.
And just because something completely fucking nuts happened that one time in 2016 doesn’t mean it is always about to happen again at any moment forever and ever.
The truth is just always less dramatic and a lot more mundane and tedious. That’s probably not such a great thing for Republicans, who now seem to be entirely reliant on unicorns, black swans, and pigs flying.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
There’s an important detail about Fifth Amendment protections that sometimes gets overlooked in lazy media reports that seldom manage to keep civil and criminal proceedings straight.
And it’s a detail that is now rearing its head in the John Eastman disbarment before the Court of the California State Bar.
In a criminal case a defendant may not be compelled by the state to take the stand and testify. Everybody knows that bit. But along with that comes a pretty strict rule that the prosecution may not call the jury’s attention to that if the accused asserts that right. You can’t really even mention it at all. Not even in argument. And most of the time, often based on local rules, the jury in such a criminal case is given a specific instruction just in case they decide to notice it all on their own.
And as we recently saw in the E. Jean Carrol Trump-trial, a defendant can’t be compelled to take the stand to defend themselves in a civil trial either. And Trump didn’t. Which was one of the few smart legal moves we’ve ever seen from Trump.
But… in a civil trial the plaintiff can absolutely draw the jury’s attention to it if the defendant declines to defend him or herself against the civil complaint. It’s very much fair game and sure to be part of any closing argument to the jury if the actual named party in the complaint has nothing to say to the jury in their own defense.
So now Eastman, who is facing a pending trial for his disbarment from the California State Bar, appears to have reached the exact same conclusion as every other lawyer in America and nearly every journalist covering the fake electors fraud scheme indictment of Trump. He too seems pretty convinced that “co-conspirator number 2” described in the indictment carrying out a shit ton of nakedly criminal shit on Trump’s behalf is actually a California lawyer named John Eastman. And Eastman’s big worry is that if he opens his fat mouth to defend himself from disbarment in California those statements could be used against him later on when the Jack-Hammer finally comes down on him. Likewise he’s afraid that if he declines to respond to his disbarment by defending himself on the stand the Court (no citizen jury) could rule against him. So last Friday he filed a motion begging for a stay or postponement.
I for one am perfectly willing to see him get the delay. I can’t really imagine there’s anyone willing to pay this guy for legal services of any kind at this point. Any boards or legal associations that he may serve on should already be taking steps to suspend his ass if they haven’t already. And of course an indictment and conviction on federal charges of fraud, obstruction, and seditious conspiracy will seal the deal on his disbarment anyway.
He’s a legal cockroach. The kitchen lights are on now and he’s been scared back under the baseboards to cringe and hide for as long as he can. He’s not crushed yet. But it’s inevitable.

The bad news would seem to be that they have concluded they must rely on the candidate’s spouse to fix it.

So Big City, Liberal, San Antonio takes threats seriously while rural deep red parts of Texas just wait an hour for the shooting stops after the fact to take action.

I’m just having a blast watching how utterly powerless Republicans are to do any kind of course correction.
The very instant the messaging begins to soften or diverge in any meaningful way from the Q-Cray ultra-MAGA STOPTHESTEAL extreme idiocy then the enthusiasm dips, and the audience disengages. And so they lean right back into it. Some Republican somewhere always gives in to the irresistible lure of the media attention and goes full retard. And then the race is back on again.
We haven’t even made it to the primary season.
And already Republicans have promised to take voting away from young people, pass a nationwide abortion ban, cut off and abandon Ukraine and NATO, implement citizenship tests for everyone under 25, take over your local school district at gunpoint, ban contraception without a marriage license, outlaw your plug-in vehicle, and force your kids to pray to Jesus every morning in public school.
I could not have planned this any better if Republicans put me in charge.

“Honestly, it feels that much of this is intentional, in order to cause as much chaos in public education as possible, so that the collapse of public education is swift and the agenda of education privatization can move forward with less obstacles.”
Which makes perfect sense, given what Republicans’ agenda is and how they operate.

And that’s as much courage as you’ll ever see emanate from the GOP camp.
We have to recall that beginning with the Impeachment, and then advancing rapidly with President Biden’s inauguration, Republican political leaders everywhere began to tell their voters that it was all an illusion. That what happened culminating in a deadly riot attacking Congress and attempting to assassinate then Vice President Pence was merely “vacationing tourists who got out of hand”. That naturally led to those voters tending to believe the narratives that absolved them and their party of a treasonous attack on our most fundamental democratic processes.
Having led their own voters into that trap, for what were and are essentially short-term political ends, they can’t abandon them there without suffering a huge loss of support. Certainly the less gullible and the slightly more analytical of “conservative” voters have figured out by now that they let themselves be duped by greedily supping up ridiculous lies merely to avoid any close examination of the truth. But those voters pin their faint hopes on some other candidate winning the 2024 Republican nomination. There just aren’t nearly enough of them. And having now once been badly deceived and lied to, they won’t show up for polls and rallies. And they won’t give one cent. Their enthusiasm will continue to decline as their ranks grow. But that still leaves Trump as the nominee. And that means he will hold the power over the party in 2024.
So they all have no real choice but to play it safe and to act the coward for as long as Trump remains around. Which is likely to be a long time.

Not having anything to do with BudLight but still interesting.
The major brewers are finally coming around to the idea that “craft” owned by a multinational has never really been successful. The people who deeply support the product flee once the buyout is announced and the craft industry has now spent 40 some years unsuccessfully trying to get the fizzy yellow light flavor beer crowd away from (Grandpa’s) Dad’s, Good ole ‘merican beer.
ABInBev just sold 7 of their “craft” brands that they either developed themselves or bought in the last decade or so to Tilray brands, the largest cannabis producer in the world.
Shock Top
Breckenridge Brewery
Blue Point Brewing Company
10 Barrel Brewing Company
Redhook Brewery
Widmer Brothers Brewing
Square Mile Cider Company
and seemingly an afterthought HiBall Energy.
Tilray becomes the largest ‘craft’ brewer in the U.S.
The market is littered with “Ice Road”, “Four Peaks”, “SkipJack” and “Patagonia” that were all major label beers introduced as “small batch artisan” product. “Patagonia” almost immediately got sued out of existence in the U.S. because the clothing and equipment company had for decades partnered with actual small breweries to do fundraising special releases. So no, you can’t violate the trademark on beer products from an established brand. Kind of like no one will ever be able to do a “Men’s Room” beer because of the Elysian / KISS radio collaboration.
Anywhoo, just more weirdness from the beer industry.

I was just thinking about what the foray into craft beer has cost the mega beer industry over the years.
Just to acquire the big three Craft Beer Alliance of Redhook, Kona and Widmer cost AB $320m. They just sold all of that and four other breweries for $85m.
Constellation bought Ballast Point for $1B and pushed Sculpin all over and then added fruit flavored Sculpin. Beer aficionados abandoned the brand and Constellation sold it at a 90% loss four years later.
I’m looking forward to see if Sapporo gets any value out of $156m for Stone.

The Fat Midget is now getting less than half of all the Republican primary support that is at least willing to consider an option other than Trump. Crowded field, winner-take-all primaries, and candidate #QUALITY will all but guarantee Trump wins the GOP nomination.
And most Republicans already admit that Trump can’t win.
It seems as if the majority of Republican primary voters have conceded this election to President Biden and are simply nominating Trump to be dicks about it.
Good.
Because Trump helps us win back the House.
