Rigging the most powerful court with hand puppets in service to billionaire plutocrats is extremism.
A call for lifetime appointees to a coequal branch of government to recognize and adhere to basic rules of ethics and transparency is a centrist, bipartisan, consensus view shared by the overwhelming majority of Americans.
The Supreme Court should adopt and publish its own binding code of ethics, and lay out a transparent system of accountability to that code. That is the absolute bare minimum that they owe to the public they serve and who have honored them with that service.
If the current members of the court refuse to accept that basic responsibility, then the other two branches of government have a responsibility to the public they serve to implement such a code for them.
This is this institutionalist position that seeks to protect and preserve the credibility and authority of the court as an institution and as a coequal third branch of government responsible only to the law. The opposing position would destroy the court for the sake of preserving a myth and concealing a corrupt political charade.
It’s our republic. We can only preserve it if we choose to.
