Despite FOX having the cash on hand to pay these settlements, giving the money away is not their business model. And a careful accounting of the financial impact that rebuilding MAGA audience with lies had on FOX proves that with this and future settlements it was a losing strategy financially. Lying about Trump and the GOP’s manifest failures makes MAGA viewers happy and keeps them tuning in. But they are simply not a sufficiently lucrative audience to support the costs of those lies.
But even still, there is probably more to this story than we know at this point. Perhaps we’ll find out what’s on those tapes some day.

War is not good. What’s happening in Ukraine right now is a fuckuva long way from war. Wagner Group mercenaries high as fuck on amphetamines being paid to shoot children in the head and bomb hospitals is like no other war Europe at least has ever seen before.
But the opposition to Russian war criminals is being conducted entirely by volunteers. Some of them are dying. Others are losing limbs, eyes, etc. It’s terrible, of course. The one thing about the Podcast business is the over 60 set has not embraced it at all. Tucker has never had a successful radio show with a listenership that would naturally transition to podcasting.
Of the top 20 podcasts in America Rogan is the clear #1. It took him a decade of independent audience cultivation to get to his mega deal. The second is a straight news show from the New York Times. You don’t see a conservative commentary show until Shapiro at 11 and Bognino at 20. Both of them cultivated the young conservative audience Tucker has never had. Only 1/5th of Tucker’s TV audience is under 55. If 100% of those start downloading his podcast daily he’s not in the top 20.
True crime and entertainment dominate the mid-tier podcasts. Weirdly 7 of the top 20 are NPR products or were when launched and that’s the biggest issue with their ongoing financial troubles. The business model, despite the “Taxpayer Funded” complaints has always been local stations pay to air the shows produced by the NPR, APM and the big local stations like Minnesota public radio, WNYC and WBBR. Now the podcasts of the network shows are cannibalizing the local affiliate over the air audience so the local stations are cancelling or demanding lower fees.
But back to the issue, Tucker doesn’t have a built in podcast audience to take with him so a Network would be risking a lot giving him even half of Rogan type money.

So anyway, Biden was and is the WINNER. More Americans cast a vote for that guy in 2020 than have ever voted for anyone in the history of the United States. He basically ran the most successful political campaign in all of recorded history from his home office while wearing a mask. Making him simultaneously both the most successful and laziest political figure in all of recorded human history. That was wild too. And very big news. Another weird thing to pretend to have missed.
So even if this guy named Biden hadn’t already had a tremendously successful first two years to run on, he’d be in a very, very good position to BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF THE VERY SAME LOOSER AS LAST TIME. But in fact, he does have a fantastic record to run on. Wow. Something else a Republican pretends to have missed. And even more shocking, this time around he gets to run as an incumbent, piped into voters phones, computers, and televisions whenever he feels like it, flying around on a taxpayer funded 747 accompanied by a massive armored motorcade, and cutting ribbons wherever it suits him. He can hold as many or as few press conferences as he likes, take questions or decline them as he likes, and be supremely confident that the media will cover it and rebroadcast it.
So of course general polls about mood, inclination, or abstract preference taken out of context are not predictive of an election outcome that is still eighteen months away.
But that kind of polling gives a very good indication of what the communication challenges are for the campaigns, and that’s especially true for campaigns representing candidates who are not incumbent, who have a record of only failure, and who are not merely “not the preference” but are in fact REVILED by significant percentages of non-aligned swing state voters.
Biden doesn’t have to pivot. He never has had to pivot. His record is unmatched in terms of success.
And Trump NEVER WILL PIVOT. Despite all the pleading and fervent wish-casting through all these years Trump has never pivoted and never will. His only chance to win last time literally required destroying state electoral certificates and replacing them with fraudulent forgeries. He is hated for that as much as anything. Americans love their vote and they love their democracy. The GOP nominee tried to take it away from them. And he used violence and deadly mayhem in the attempt. He’s a garbage person for a garbage people. That is what MAGA stands for. And everyone knows it.

But our country, unlike most, draws a distinction between “protest” and “uprising,” giving the benefit of doubt to the former. – to quadruple the ranks of federal law enforcement and to dispatch them to conduct warrantless raids of any home or business they choose for any reason;
– to flood our streets and communities with heavily armed uniformed active duty military to suppress public dissent and impose “order”;
– to take control of public education curriculum away from states and local school boards and give it to the federal government;
– to massively expand the federal government to engage in building new, carefully planned, access controlled cities and suburbs;
– to seize control of private social media companies and technologies and hand it over to the federal government;
– to seize control of elections from the states and hand it over to a federal government agency of his own creation.
These are just a few highlights of things Trump is currently promising his audiences when he campaigns. We all know how this works now. If these things get applause they are repeated. If repeating them makes them get still more applause they become policy imperatives. Trump’s campaign has domestic policy staff assigned to monitor and score these responses. When his ultra MAGA rally audiences love something it gets assigned to a team to be developed into a policy initiative for the future administration.
One of the greatest blessings of Trump’s arrogance was the fact that it left him completely unprepared to make any use of his first two years in office. He learned that lesson and a few others. And he won’t let it happen again.
It’s hard to take people who support this asshole seriously when they claim to want less government.
It sounds more like what they really want is a lot more government, but a lot less democracy.
