Over the weekend, I accidentally took the H line. I was trying to get to West Seattle, and the sign must have said Via Westwood Village, instead of the destination. Yikes. Anyway, it took a little longer to get where I need, but it’s fine. Don’t make my mistake. That said, if it’s your actual destination, it looks good.

    The current ultra-MAGA extremist GOP budget plan will impose:

    – 4% cut to Social Security

    – 24% cut to Medicare

    – 49% cut to Medicaid, CHP, Affordable Care plans

    – 60% cut to military retirement, farm subsidies, feeding programs for children, anti-poverty programs

    – 49% cut to law enforcement, transportation safety, public health research, veterans health, foreign affairs, energy

    – 1% increase to defense

    – Preserve and slightly increase gigantic tax cuts for the wealthiest 1.0% of taxpayers

    These MAGA Republican proposals would specifically result in cutting over 10,000 full time law enforcement positions, terminating air traffic control services at 125 ATC towers across the country, eliminating over 11,000 railway safety checks and 30,000 miles of track inspection, raise the price of insulin for millions of suffering Americans, and ship hundreds of thousands of US manufacturing jobs overseas.

    But Jeff Bezos could get his girlfriend a bigger helicopter for her birthday.

    A judge declined Tuesday to move the trial date for a civil lawsuit filed against former President Donald Trump, his eldest children and his company by New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleging they duped banks and insurers by inflating the value of Trump’s real estate portfolio.

    Trump’s legal team sought the delay but Judge Arthur Engoron said there was no need to postpone what he called a “seemingly simple case” of whether Trump’s disclosures to his lenders and insurers, known as statements of financial condition, were accurate or not.

    Six people affiliated with the Oath Keepers, a far-right militia, were convicted Monday of various charges related to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol insurrection.

    Four of the defendants were found guilty on all of the charges they faced, including conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, conspiracy to prevent a member of congress from doing their duty, destruction of government property and civil disorder.

    The high-level convictions for four defendants is another significant win for the Justice Department, which has worked for years to bring consequences against people who they say plotted for violence at the Capitol that day – the largest criminal investigation in the department’s history – and comes as some conservatives continue to promote the false narrative the riots were peaceful.

    It’s already the largest criminal investigation and prosecution in U.S. history. And perhaps the most remarkable thing about it is how absolutely flawlessly the DOJ has performed both in pretrial and at trial.

    I know a lot of people have been frustrated at the pace of this DOJ and have wished at times that Attorney General Garland was more aggressive and outspoken. But the best prosecutors let the trial courts and their trial records do the talking.

    Maybe it might have been briefly satisfying for Garland to have been more of a showboat like Barr and spent all his time talking shit. But Barr’s job and his legacy in general had nothing at all to do with restoring public trust in federal law enforcement. Barr was there to protect Trump and nothing more.

    By methodically pursuing these investigations and these criminal convictions to their lawful conclusion, and by doing it all without fanfare or superfluous commentary, Garland is establishing that the people can rely upon their federal law enforcement and their federal criminal courts to protect elections in good faith and without bias. That’s ultimately worth more than any brief moment of talking shit.

    About half the population of Utah today is Mormon, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints holds a strong influence. Anyone in the faith will tell you: Mormons do not like debt.

    “I’ve worked in many other states; I’ve never worked in a place where students have been so debt-averse, and I think that has a lot to do with the culture here,” says Mary Parker, director of student enrollment at the University of Utah.

    High school students are required to take a course in financial wellness, and the official website of the LDS Church has a page dedicated to debt.

    “Since the early days of the Church, the Lord’s prophets have repeatedly warned against the bondage of debt,” reads the page at LDS.org. “When it is necessary to incur debt, such as a reasonable amount to purchase a modest home or to complete one’s education, the debt should be repaid as quickly as possible.”

    Parker did her dissertation in Utah on the impact of financial aid for low- to middle-income students. She found that a large percentage of them are working through school and that students and their families are often not comfortable taking out loans.

    “They would rather work two jobs or take less credit hours,” Parker says. “Students will reduce hours or drop out entirely to avoid loans.”

    Instead of spending stupidly during good times, the state of Utah saved. Which helped when bad times came around.

    Many states cut back on higher education funding after the 2008 recession, but Utah was able to avoid deep cuts because it had rainy day funds to draw on. By 2016, the average state was spending 18 percent less per student than before the recession. In Utah, state spending has dropped 13.7 percent.

    Why the fuck would a state whose residents avoid incurring a quarter of a million dollars in debt in order to obtain a degree in Theology of Transgender Child Molesters want to subsidize those who make stupid decisions?

    Going after the representative is weak. You do it because you can’t go after his constituents for behaving wisely.
