now THAT’s a headline. Eyeing a run for president, Ron DeSantis wants to ‘Make America Florida‘
he’s running on his accomplishments
He’s gutted programs promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in the schools. He’s signed a law banning abortions after 15 weeks. Don’t Be Gay. Banned all non conservative books. And he pushed through new congressional maps that eliminated two African American voting districts. As governor, DeSantis has extended his authority beyond state agencies and laws into local matters — exerting control over school boards, county health policies, even businesses that hold drag shows.
No mention of Insurance rates through the roofs, avoidable COVID deaths, waterways are getting worse due to no action with Lake O, the education system cratering, and the last hurricane had the highest death count in the last 100 years.

But that puts Republicans at a massive disadvantage going into the general election with such a nominee. Every successful challenge of an incumbent president has resulted from a campaign that transformed the election from a choice into a referendum. Even if DeSantis’ record were not almost entirely fabricated, it would still put him at a massive disadvantage to an incumbent as accomplished as Dark Brandon. Biden’s age will remain a weakness. But unless Republicans produce a candidate and a campaign positioned to exploit that weakness they will lose again.
We should be thanking them for offering to match Fat Midget’s record against Joe Biden’s. It’s as good as a concession.

My objection to these people is that when they campaign (and in the House that is always) they frequently rely on positioning their views in contrast to the rest of their own party, and in particular to specific other Democrats, including their own president, rather than in contrast to Republicans. They do this because they are lazy and cowardly. Lazy because the “party controversy” that this positioning produces is a dumb-easy, “man bites dog” way to get media attention. Cowardly because it requires real courage to engage with moderate, lean-R voters in these swing districts and help them to understand why Republicans are amoral fascists.
She and other Blue Dogs are 100% right. And it’s been very reassuring to see them consistently oppose this GOP bigotry and hate speech without hesitation or nuance. This is the right thing.

“He noted that the war with Disney, the right-wing laws that have no hope of being upheld in court, and the release of a book he wrote while he was supposed to be serving as governor, mismanaging the aftermath of a deadly hurricane, fixing the insurance crisis and contending with the impact of a red tide on the state’s tourism. Oliver went on to mention Donald Trump attempting to come up with a nickname for DeSantis, starting with Ron DeSanctimonious. That has since given way to ‘Meatball Ron.'”
“He then noted that the attack on DeSantis from pundits calling him ‘Trump with a brain,’ is not helpful and explained it’s like saying ‘this chicken pot pie that fell on the sidewalk.'”

Besides posting adoring words about the former president, the fake accounts ridiculed Trump’s critics from both parties and attacked Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and U.N. ambassador who is challenging her onetime boss for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination

The sprawling bot network was uncovered by researchers at Cyabra, an Israeli tech firm that shared its findings with The Associated Press. While the identity of those behind the network of fake accounts is unknown, Cyabra’s analysts determined that it was likely created within the U.S.

Why did the protestors attack the kop kompound?
Protesters descended upon Atlanta following the death of Manuel Esteban Paez Terán (“Tortuguita”), a climate activist who was killed during a violent confrontation with police earlier in the week…
Terán was part of a group of environmental protesters blocking the construction of a new Atlanta Police Department training facility. The group dubbed their campaign “Stop Cop City.”
“Destruction of material is fundamentally different from violence. All reported acts appear to be explicitly targeted against the financial backers & goons of the Atlanta Police Foundation, a shady nonprofit that funnels weapons and military gear into our city to wage war on black and brown folks,” a spokesperson for the anti-police campaign told a local Atlanta news station.
An earlier police raid that sought to remove protesters from the proposed sight turned violent when, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Terán shot an officer, forcing law enforcement to return fire, killing him.
Terán’s mother, Belkis, challenged the narrative that her son was violent and shot first. “I will go to the US to defend Manuel’s memory,” Belkis, who lives in Panama told The Guardian. “I’m convinced that he was assassinated in cold blood.”
Only a great resource for learning about domestic fascists, violent racists and neo-nazis…
Like noted terrorist Ben Carson?
SPLC Statement on Dr. Ben Carson In October 2014, we posted an “Extremist File” of Dr. Ben Carson. This week, as we’ve
come under intense criticism for doing so, we’ve reviewed our profile and have
concluded that it did not meet our standards, so we have taken it down and apologize to
Dr. Carson for having posted it.
We’ve also come to the conclusion that the question of whether a better-researched
profile of Dr. Carson should or should not be included as our “Extremist List” is taking
attention from the fact that Dr. Carson has, in fact, made a number of statements that
express views that we believe most people would conclude are extreme. They are
described below.
We laud Dr. Carson for his many contributions to medicine and his philanthropic work,
and we, like so many others, are inspired by his personal story. Nevertheless, particularly
because Dr. Carson is such a prominent person, we believe that his views should continue
to be closely examined.
The statement continues to list some of Dr. Carson’s statements.
Oh, and then there’s the SPLC accusation of a scholar whose views differed from its own.
WASHINGTON — The storied Southern Poverty Law Center has agreed to formally apologize to a scholar it accused of being a Turkish agent because of his views on the long-ago slaughter of Armenians.
The public apology by the civil rights group ends a multimillion-dollar libel lawsuit filed by historian Guenter Lewy, author of the book “The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey: A Disputed Genocide.” The settlement does not, however, end a debate that still entangles lawmakers from regions with large Armenian-American populations. . .
“I think it was a long time coming,” Lewy said of the lawsuit settlement in an interview Wednesday. “It not only clears me of these malicious charges, it’s a victory for free inquiry.”
The settlement of the 2-year-old lawsuit includes a confidential financial payment to Lewy as well as a three-paragraph apology and retraction that the Southern Poverty Law Center will be making public within a week.
The SPLC once played a in important role in this country. Its role has ended, and it now beclowns itself on a regular basis.

Black Democrats join with Republicans in Nebraska on a permitless concealed carry bill.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — After years of trying to pass a bill to allow people to carry concealed guns in Nebraska without a permit, conservative lawmakers are on the cusp of doing so, thanks in part to the defection of two Democratic Omaha senators — the only Black lawmakers in the body…
Most bills need 33 votes to pass in Nebraska’s unique one-house Legislature. There are currently 17 Democratic lawmakers in the officially nonpartisan body — enough to successfully filibuster most bills if they all vote together.
But two other Democrats joined Wayne and McKinney in voting for the permitless conceal carry bill, including Omaha Sen. Mike McDonnell, a former Omaha firefighter union president who switched to support the measure after the Omaha police union pulled its objection to the bill. Democratic Sen. Lynne Walz, of Fremont, abstained from voting.

During my first few weeks, a friendly new co-worker couldn’t help laughing at my bewilderment. “Well, honey, welcome to the Poverty Palace,” she said. “I can guaran-damn-tee that you will never step foot in a more contradictory place as long as you live.”
“Everything feels so out of whack,” I said. “Where are the lawyers? Where’s the diversity? What in God’s name is going on here?”
“And you call yourself a journalist!” she said, laughing again. “Clearly you didn’t do your research.”
In the decade or so before I’d arrived, the center’s reputation as a beacon of justice had taken some hits from reporters who’d peered behind the façade. In 1995, the Montgomery Advertiser had been a Pulitzer finalist for a series that documented, among other things, staffers’ allegations of racial discrimination within the organization. In Harper’s, Ken Silverstein had revealed that the center had accumulated an endowment topping a hundred and twenty million dollars while paying lavish salaries to its highest-ranking staffers and spending far less than most nonprofit groups on the work that it claimed to do. The great Southern journalist John Egerton, writing for The Progressive, had painted a damning portrait of Dees, the center’s longtime mastermind, as a “super-salesman and master fundraiser” who viewed civil-rights work mainly as a marketing tool for bilking gullible Northern liberals. “We just run our business like a business,” Dees told Egerton. “Whether you’re selling cakes or causes, it’s all the same.”

I was told @ 55 there was no sweeping under the rug at SPLC.
One day later, the Los Angeles Times and the Alabama Political Reporter reported that Dees’s ouster had come amid a staff revolt over the mistreatment of nonwhite and female staffers, which was sparked by the resignation of the senior attorney Meredith Horton, the highest-ranking African-American woman at the center. A number of staffers subsequently signed onto two letters of protest to the center’s leadership, alleging that multiple reports of sexual harassment by Dees through the years had been ignored or covered up, and sometimes resulted in retaliation against the women making the claims.
62
Roger Rabbitspews:
@56 Sounds like Nebraska blacks want to arm.
63
Roger Rabbitspews:
@59 It does sound like Dees had some personal issues, and SPLC under him was a toxic workplace. Sooooo …….
“On 14 March 2019 the SPLC announced that Dees had been fired from the organization and the SPLC would hire an ‘outside organization’ to assess the SPLC’s workplace climate. Former employees alleged that Dees was ‘complicit’ in harassment and racial discrimination, and said that at least one female employee had accused him of sexual harassment.”
And the dumbfuck, as usual, is relying on past history, just like the Florida legislator who’s using pre-Civil War support for slavery as an excuse to ban the Democratic Party, and Alito cited medieval texts as an excuse to overturn Roe v. Wade.
If they don’t have a present rationale, they surely can dig up something from the last 1,000 years to prop up their argument. For them it’s easy, because they admire the Middle Ages lifestyle going in.
65
Roger Rabbitspews:
@61 I wouldn’t call firing the founder and funder “sweeping under the rug,” but it appears you would to score your cheap little points.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has apologized and agreed to pay $3.375 million to a group fighting Islamic extremism after including it on its since-deleted list of “anti-Muslim extremists.”
The SPLC announced the settlement Monday along with a written and video apology to the Quilliam Foundation and its founder, Maajid Nawaz, for listing them in its 2016 publication A Journalist’s Manual: Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists.
SPLC President Richard Cohen, who appeared in the video, said his group was “wrong” and offered “our sincerest apology” for including Quilliam in the “field guide.”

FEDERAL RESERVE Fed Chair Powell says interest rates are ‘likely to be higher’ than previously anticipated
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Tuesday cautioned that interest rates are likely to head higher than central bank policymakers had expected.
Citing data earlier this year showing that inflation has reversed the deceleration it showed in late 2022, the central bank leader warned of tighter monetary policy ahead to slow a growing economy.
“The latest economic data have come in stronger than expected, which suggests that the ultimate level of interest rates is likely to be higher than previously anticipated,” Powell said in remarks prepared for two appearances this week on Capitol Hill. “If the totality of the data were to indicate that faster tightening is warranted, we would be prepared to increase the pace of rate hikes.”
Why, this dovetails nicely into 2024, doesn’t it?

Knowles is one of the founding staffers for Ben Shapiro’s petroleum billionaire backed online political media company The Daily Wire. His was only the third podcast to be launched. Knowles also hosts another successful Daily Wire podcast with co-host Senator Ted Cruz. Following a successful stint as a fill-in host for dying drug addict Rush Limbaugh, Shapiro entered into an agreement with the radio syndication service Westwood One to produce a daily radio show syndicated nationwide.
Shapiro, The Daily Wire, Westwood One, and Ted Cruz all stand behind and support Knowles 100% following his speech calling for the eradication of transgender people.
This is official, albeit unspoken, GOP/conservative policy now.
Would you like to know what political ideology focuses on identifying out-groups in a society and targeting them for “eradication” in order to restore “tradition” and “national pride”?
Fascism. That is actually pretty much Fascism’s thing. Yes, they are authoritarian. But so are many other political ideologies. Fascism is unique among political ideologies in seeking to obtain sweeping, oppressive moral, political, and legal authority over society by specifically identifying cultural in-groups and out-groups and then leveraging that identity to gain a consensus approval for giving authority to the in-group in order to “eradicate” the out-groups.
And when you boil it all down, strip away the falsified stories about “transgender rape” or “CRT” that is what the Republican Party as it is currently composed leaves you with.
And that’s also why it was so important for the Shit-lord crybaby to launch an absurdly false claim that this featured speaker at Republican Woodstock is a “nobody”.
Republicans really are fascists now. It isn’t hyperbole or rhetoric. It’s what they actually stand for. And they can’t afford for American voters to figure that out.

Responding to the likely silliness @ 100.
There are now over 1000 of these criminals having been indicted, plead, or convicted at trial. One lawyer, whose substack I’m absolutely not going to fuck around with, has signed 25 of them. Which I should say, indicates plenty of energy if nothing else. Still it’s 2.5% of the big picture.
And quite a big picture it is. The massive, violent, armed, HANG-MIKE-PENCE attack on The Congress that took place in January of 2021 to prevent the election certification has very reluctantly become a preoccupying cottage industry within the Criminal Division of DOJ with its very own Section reporting to it’s very own Deputy Attorney General. It borrows staff from every office in every state. It is undoubtedly the single largest criminal prosecution associated with a single group or event in US history since the war crimes trials after WWII.
And being part of the DOJ, it will be bureaucratic, indifferent to the claims and pleadings of the defendants, and one-sided.
That’s what criminal prosecutors in the federal government do, all day, every day. That’s what we pay them to do. And up until just this second, when that vast apparatus was quite unexpectedly turned upon a violent mob of middle aged, middle class and very, very white real estate brokers and retirees, it was what all of America wanted them to do.
I’ve said it before here, if Republicans are suddenly interested in sweeping criminal justice reforms that would level that playing field in favor of every criminal defendant everywhere, including poor, working class, immigrant, non-white, or non-Xtian defendants it is certainly news to me.
If that were true, in even the slightest detail, then just what the fuck was all that WAR ON CRIME pearl clutching from Brave Kevin, the House GOP, and our own silly Shit-lord crybaby last week about the DC crime bill?

While Walgreens gives voice to reality, other pharmacy chains will possibly be bound by the same restrictions:
The Republicans, in their brief to the court, argued that FDA approval of a drug does not give the manufacturer an unconditional right to the sell the medication at all times. The states have the power to regulate abortion whether it is performed through a surgical procedure or a medication, they said.
The GOP attorneys general said West Virginia’s law does not completely ban the abortion pill. Mifepristone can be used in cases of medical emergency, rape and incest, they said. But the FDA’s powers wouldn’t override West Virginia law even if the state did completely ban mifepristone.
“Even if West Virginia had banned mifepristone, there still wouldn’t be a preemption problem,” the Republican attorneys general argued. Nothing in the statute that governs the FDA prevents a state from banning a drug that federal law otherwise permits, they said.
Prices charged by other pharmacies in CA will rise as Walgreens is marginalized, should Gavin’s pronouncement take effect. Or perhaps, as with Gavin’s call for a windfall tax on oil companies last Fall, nothing will happen.
I’ve never owned Walgreens or CVS, or RiteAid. There’s nothing here that makes me want to buy or sell, whether it be shares or options on shares.

Since I can also find a “staunch conservative”, a “Libertarian” and a “far left liberal” who all declare a fervent belief in vampires, that means we need the federal government to immediately appoint a Vampire Czar to oversee and coordinate a government-wide response to the plague of vampires.

@127 For a while, I was getting two or three letters a day from strangers wanting to buy my digs. Quite, peaceful neighborhood. Walking distance to parks and shopping. Fascists don’t run the schools and nearby libraries. Off-street privacy at the end of a long private driveway and screened from the street by a forest of towering firs. On my premises, backup power and central air conditioning. Plenty of storage space. Workshops. Indoor parking for my power yacht. Well-equipped workout room. Plenty of bookcases. And no mortgage. Ahhh, life is good here. Why on earth would I sell? Certainly not to move to Texass, Arizona, Florida, Whidbey Island, or some other retirement “heaven.” My heaven is right here in Seattle. Sure, the taxes are a little higher, but I can afford them, and the money goes for constructive things like educating kids and acquiring greenbelts.

145,
It is historically commonplace for fascist movements to identify the disabled as belonging to the targeted out-groups.
It’s important to understand that fascism most often experiences rapid growth in periods of either real, or perceived scarcity. The scarcity perceived among modern Republicans that leads them to embrace fascism is owing to a decline of political influence and privilege, rather than any real economic scarcity. These are all mostly economically comfortable to affluent people, who nevertheless feel “threatened” and see their opportunity for or access to authority under direct threat from growing equality, pluralism, and diversity.
Within such an atmosphere of perceived scarcity, disabled persons are regarded as “using too much resource”, even when the resources are essentially non-economic in nature. Thus, a highly capable and accomplished disabled person, for example Cyrus Habib, is resented by Republican fascists not because they demand too many economic resources relative to their contributions, but rather because they receive “too much attention and get too much credit”. As a Republican sees it, such a person is getting more influence and authority than their physical characteristics would justify. And this is why you won’t see Greg Abbot on any ballots next year. It’s also why the first time Fat Midget stands next to Donald Trump on a debate stage, his campaign will be over.
Well, I don’t want no short people

Another important feature of fascism, although not one that is unique to fascism, is the gradual devolution of the rights and freedoms of individuals to the authority of the state. Florida is an excellent example. From radical state interventions into the private property rights of corporations, to radical state interventions into the academic freedoms of institutions of higher learning, to radical state interventions into the rights of individuals to express themselves on social media or the internet, the pattern is classical fascism.
What the Florida GOP are doing perfectly illustrates how fascism uniquely exploits this targeted devolution of individual rights. The attempt and the appeal is that of a bargain. We’ll let you say or do whatever the fuck you like. But in return you have to support us.

High profits tend much more to raise the price of work than high wages. Our merchants and master-manufacturers complain much of the bad effects of high wages in raising the price. … They say nothing concerning the bad effects of high profits. They are silent with regard to the pernicious effects of their own gains. They complain only of those of other people

Some CEOs have admitted on shareholder calls and in surveys that they have been taking advantage of inflation to raise profit margins by increasing prices beyond what is needed to offset any increase in their input costs. Whether increased use of the internet and algorithmic pricing by businesses makes this easier than previously is an important topic for future research.
And the greedhead CEO’s will continue until the Fed squeezes the economy enough to kill demand for their products or fuck up their debt financing.

All Newsome really did is bar Walgreens from being awarded state contracts but did so in a very public way making 39m Californians and roughly 161m American women aware of Walmart’s siding with the Christo fascists.
161m potential customers is a lot of risk.

RiteAid has lost money in 7 of the last 8 quarters, and trades in the low single digits, after a reverse 1-for-20 stock split not long ago. It’s down 69% from its yearly high. It jettisoned its CEO in January. It’s going to close 145 stores.
Small wonder it didn’t fall further today. Pretty much nowhere else to go.
Speaking of nowhere else to go, after RiteAid closes that will include a bunch of people in California who won’t be able to buy stuff at Walgreens after Newsom cuts them off from that chain.

Think of those who face re-election in 2024, notably Tester. Rosen already came out in partial opposition. Force those Democrats to take a vote, and it’s John Tower-ville. Or worse.
She’d probably end up with 45 votes, max, and a good number of those would be voted grudgingly, costing First Vegetable Joe Biden some political capital. Capital he can’t spare.

I suspect he’d be perfectly happy to talk about how Reagan turned his back on the death and suffering AIDS caused and did nothing to help find a treatment or cure. If you want to get rid of a group of people, isn’t it better if nature does it for you?
By the way, in case you’ve forgotten, heteros got AIDS too, from non-sexual transmission (e.g., dental procedures and blood transfusions). But being relatively small in number, those victims were easily written off as collateral damage.

It is your sincere belief that there is literally no competition in California Pharmacy market and the demise of Walgreens will create a noticeable rise in prices among the remaining 2 dozen or so retailers for you understand market forces and economics.
It is also my belief that the current corrupt SCOTUS will decide to override the Interstate Commerce Clause and the Full Faith and Credit clause to make criminal an act which takes place in another state (sale), eliminate the USPS as an interstate carrier with a single set of restrictions on content, and possibly give states the ability to eliminate ANY safe and effective drug because they just don’t like some aspect of it.
Imagine that second ruling. Can a female dominated legislature in the future ban any and all erectile dysfunction medication. (Yes) We, the legislature of Mississippi sincerely believe peanut allergies are not real so you are not allowed to buy sell import or possess an EpiPen within the state (legal) We really want drug addicts to just die so here in Missouri it is illegal to sell Narcan (Absolutely legal) God made bald people, Rogaine is not allowed to be sold in Utah (Of course!)
Doing great work again, Dumbfuck

145,
It is historically commonplace for fascist movements to identify the disabled as belonging to the targeted out-groups.

Been reading through Strong and Ferguson’s paper on inflation. They quote an economist in support of their thesis:
High profits tend much more to raise the price of work than high wages. Our merchants and master-manufacturers complain much of the bad effects of high wages in raising the price. … They say nothing concerning the bad effects of high profits. They are silent with regard to the pernicious effects of their own gains. They complain only of those of other people
Oh jeebus.. Who said this? Marx? Engels? Some latter day “woke” leftist?
Adam Smith said this. In “The Wealth of Nations”. In 177 f’ing 6.
Strong and Ferguson continue:
Some CEOs have admitted on shareholder calls and in surveys that they have been taking advantage of inflation to raise profit margins by increasing prices beyond what is needed to offset any increase in their input costs. Whether increased use of the internet and algorithmic pricing by businesses makes this easier than previously is an important topic for future research.
And the greedhead CEO’s will continue until the Fed squeezes the economy enough to kill demand for their products or fuck up their debt financing.
