Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
House and Senate Democrats should unify with those willing Republicans to support passage of a moderate bipartisan bill protecting minimal access to abortion and birth control nationwide, that also grants protections to marital choice.
Such a vote serves as a framework surrounding the issue heading into the midterm elections. Give your members and your party’s challengers a bill that they can carry into their campaigns wherever they may be. Let the GOP further define themselves as a radical party of zealous extremists bent on stripping human rights. While letting Democrats define themselves as protectors and defenders of basic human rights that everyone supports like a minimal right to privacy.
Force Republican candidates to either repudiate their last fifty years cozying up to religious extremists or admit that they support intrusive, invasive GIANT government intervention into private lives.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
Contrast such a proposed bill protecting minimal human rights with the GOP:
McConnell is proposing nationwide abortion ban.
Sen Marsha Blackburn is proposing a nationwide bill restricting birth control to married couples.
Blake Masters, Trump/Thiel preferred challenger to Arizona Senator Mark Kelly is calling for a nationwide ban on condoms.
Don’t use a “symbolic” vote to set your party aspirations. It isn’t about “representing” in Blue states. It isn’t about “you”. It isn’t going to pass either way. Use it to help you retain and expand your majority by crafting it to help you in swing states and districts.
King Arthur spews:
The Republicans aren’t smart enough to realize that having abortions available in the US is actually good for the Republicans. It’s also good for those young women hoping to avoid a life of insecurity, poverty and struggle.

His defense? Twofold. One, don’t look at me, the legislature did it back in 2007 and I didn’t become governor until last year. Two, those are only a couple percent of all abortions, so no big deal. What a fucking weasel. And then there’s this:
“Tapper also pointed out that Mississippi has the nation’s highest rate of infant mortality and the highest rate of child poverty. It has no guaranteed paid maternity leave, and recently rejected extending postpartum Medicaid coverage, he added. The state’s foster care system is also the target of a federal lawsuit for its alleged failure to protect children from abuse. Reeves said his state is trying to do better.”

Finally, research shows that it costs more to adopt a white child in the US than it does to adopt a black child. According to the NPR investigation, it costs about US$35,000 to adopt a white child, absent legal fees. Meanwhile, a black child cost $18,000.

Want to win in November? Want to retain the House and gain seats in the Senate? Do you?
Propose a bill that prohibits states from limiting access to contraceptives, prohibits states from limiting access to marriage, and prohibits states from limiting access to abortion before “a fetal heartbeat” is present.
Remember: it still won’t pass.
You don’t have to even consider the consequences of such a bill being signed into law. However much some “conservatives” would welcome binding agreement on that framework, they will still kill it. And the point is not to argue that “fetal heartbeat” is a legitimate or reasonable standard for limitation. The point is to demonstrate just how extreme and just how absolutist the Republican position really is. And in doing so, you not only drive turnout, you turn squish voters against the Republican party.
No other form of legislation stands to do as much for Democrats in November. It is irresponsible to do anything else.
So naturally, Democrats will.

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
59,
The court ends up drawing the maps for them.
Functionally what happens is the opposing parties all anticipate this outcome and have properly apportioned maps ready to be presented to the court. In the event that such a decision and the resulting maps are appealed, ultimately to the SCOTUS, the Court is bound to hear it (that’s in the Constitution). They can’t decline the writ.
However, that still leaves the issue of how the Court regards claims on appeal coming before them under these conditions, wherein the appellant party is more or less entirely responsible for their own predicament. That would not create grounds under which you can reverse standing precedent. So while the Five obviously believe they can pretty much do whatever the fuck they like, that would be a legally indefensible position. They couldn’t even produce a cogent argument to justify overturning the precedent under those circumstances. Doing so would in essence be overturning important standards for appellate review and create legal chaos.
Stern points out the more plausible outcome which would be SCOTUS staying the lower court and leaving the current maps in place, arguing that the case is “not ripe”. But the problem with that is there’s nothing legally novel about South Carolina’s Republicans hoping to retain their preferred old maps. There isn’t any colorable argument about uniformity when it comes to population. They could always pretend. But that’s all it would be. And that’s what everyone would see.
Highest likely outcome is that South Carolina gets new maps issued by a court. But coming at the last minute and surrounded by lots of uncertainty, it favors incumbents over challengers which is probably the true intent here.

The Bon Appétit recipe for Roasted Strawberry-Buttermilk Sherbet by Susan Spungen published almost ten years ago.
It’s incredibly easy and can be successful with or without a churn. And it is remarkably adaptable to other fruits, generally working best with fleshy/pulpy fruits that are not too high in liquid. So it seems work out beautifully with peaches, apricots, plums, and pears (I’m going to be trying it with Marion berries this summer).
With summer fruit on the way, it’s great to have the basic formula on hand. And the simple fruit and sugar oven roasted jam that it begins with can be made ahead and kept as preserves for weeks or even months in the freezer without suffering, then mixed with the dairy and prepared as directed. It’s why farm stands were invented.
